  • Weather Related Decisions

Winter has arrived, bringing cold temperatures and rural roads that—because of our location and frequent blowing and drifting snow—will likely remain snow-covered and slick throughout the season. While these conditions are typical for Porter Township, our commitment to student safety and learning remains constant. How We Make Weather-Related Decisions The decision to delay, cancel, or shift to an eLearning day is made in collaboration with our district team, the National Weather Service, and the Porter County Highway Department. We also coordinate with neighboring Porter County school districts because we share programs such as special education and career and technical education. Our team actively monitors conditions by driving roads, reviewing weather data, consulting with meteorologists, and communicating with other superintendents. Factors such as wind, drifting snow, and the timing of highway department plowing all influence road safety and are often beyond our control. All weather-related decisions are made no later than 5:30 AM. As always, parents make the final determination about whether travel is safe for their children and themselves. On occasion, a two-hour delay may transition to a cancellation; when that happens, we aim to make the final decision by 8:00 AM. How You Will Be Notified All delays, cancellations, and weather-related updates are shared through ParentSquare. These notifications use the contact information listed in your Skyward Family Access Portal, so please review and update your information to ensure you receive timely alerts. Possible Weather Responses Option 1: Two-Hour Delay A two-hour delay shifts the start of the school day back two hours. A delay may transition into another option below if conditions worsen or do not improve. Option 2: eLearning Day Students learn from home. Teachers post student work on Schoology by 9:00 AM and are available throughout the day to assist. Administrators and technology staff are also available for support. Option 3: Synchronous eLearning Day Students learn from home following a schedule of Google Meet sessions. Teachers share the day’s schedule by 9:00 AM, and students are expected to attend each session. Administrators and technology staff remain available for assistance. Option 4: Traditional Snow Day Students do not report to school in person or online. This day will be made up on a designated snow make-up day. We typically use this option when there are widespread power outages. Snow make-up dates for this school year are as follows: If a traditional snow day is used before  February 13, 2026 , school will be in session on  February 13, 2026 . Additional traditional snow days will be made up on  April 3, 2026 , and  April 6, 2026 . Beyond these three days, days will be added to the end of the school year. Option 5: Early Dismissal Used when an approaching storm makes regular dismissal unsafe. Families should have a plan in place for early release. Early dismissal may also occur for non-weather emergencies, such as an extended power outage when we have information from the power company that they cannot restore power. Wind Chill Guidelines We closely monitor forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Sustained wind chills below –20°F create safety risks for students and can affect bus operations. If wind chills are expected to remain at –20°F or lower, we will consider a delay. If those temperatures are expected to persist well beyond 9:30 AM, a school closure may be necessary. Because wind speed greatly influences actual conditions, final decisions are often made in the early morning.

  • It's Never Too Early to Start Talking about College ...

While BGHS students are thinking about schedules and courses to fill out their schedules for years to come, it's never too early to start planning and exploring for our younger students! As you may have heard, diploma requirements in Indiana are shifting. Here's a comparison of what the new diploma will look like: As you begin exploring these options, you will also want to consider the opportunities available in Porter Township through our Porter County Career Center . Additionally, you can learn more about  Career and Technical Education from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education . We have some great programs available through Porter County Career Center and also through our Dual Credit offerings, where you can earn college credit while still in high school.  Why does this matter? Taken directly from a press release from Governor Braun, here are some of the advantages of earning an "Honors Plus Seal": ( Press Release this information comes directly from ) "Below is an overview of the opportunities available to students beginning next school year for schools that opt-in and for all students beginning with the class of 2029: For students earning the Enrollment Honors Plus Seal All seven of our state’s public colleges and universities and an increasing number of private institutions are guaranteeing automatic acceptance into their school for any student who applies and has successfully earned the enrollment plus seal. This includes: Purdue University, Indiana University, Ivy Tech Community College, Ball State University, Indiana State University, University of Southern Indiana and  Vincennes University. Additional colleges and universities will continue to be added. For students earning the Employment Honors Plus Seal Through the help of Ascend Indiana, students who earn the employment honors plus seal can receive dedicated career support. This includes helping students get connected through interviews with some of our state’s top employers. Students who interview and have completed an employment seal will also be eligible for direct entry into the Central Midwest Carpenters Union apprenticeship. State leaders are also actively working with Operating Engineers Local 150 to offer similar benefits in connection with their apprenticeship. The Indiana Chamber of Commerce is actively recruiting businesses across the state to invite and encourage them to be part of this as well. For students earning the Enlistment Honors Plus Seal Any student who completes the Enlistment and Service Honors Plus Seal will be uniquely qualified to join the Indiana National Guard and other military branches. Once accepted to the National Guard, students can: Earn college credits for completing training and reduce the time and cost required to complete a degree.
