  • FAMM - Fine Arts Monthly Medley - December 2025

FAMM Fine Arts Monthly Medley - December 2025 Marching Band Exhibition Highlights! A Grand Scale Band Collaboration This year for the TUSD Marching Band Exhibition, the bands from Catalina, Cholla, and Pueblo HS came together in a combined performance that was a true example of community and solidarity between band students. The three schools did not field a traditional halftime show this year and so were originally not planning to participate in the event. Instead, students from Catalina and Pueblo were able to meet at Cholla HS for a rehearsal where they participated in sectionals, full band rehearsal, and learned some marching basics! Many students remarked after the rehearsal and performance that they loved the experience, and that they had never played with a band so big or heard such a full marching band sound around them. Such a great example of students making memories through music! Jack Schmidgall - Band Director, Dietz K8   Jack Schmidgall on the Essentialities of Band Jack Schmidgall is the band director at Dietz K-8, three elementary feeder schools, and assists with the Cholla HS Band. Following directing the combined high school bands of Catalina, Cholla, and Pueblo for TUSD's Marching Band Exhibition, Jack sat down with us to share what he views are the unspoken essentialities of music and fine arts education. Watch the video above to hear Jack describe how music education encourages critical thinking, personal reflection and connectivity in our wider society.   Wakefield's Art Students Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos Under the guidance of visual arts teacher John Enriquez, students at Wakefield Middle School explored Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through paper mache piñatas, painting and masks for their "Ofrenda". An ofrenda is an alter like surface decorated with candles and more as an offering to those that have passed before us. No ofrenda is complete without a personal object that defines the departed. This can range from something that represents a favorite pastime to an article of clothing. Toys are often included for children, who are celebrated on November 1. (Adults are honored on November 2.) Leanne C. Miller - Curator, Arts and Artifacts    Fine Arts' Excellence Memorialized! A new mural has been completed at the entrance of Thomas L. Lee Instructional Resource Center. Artist Leanne Miller started with some sketch ideas and finally landed on a collage that would be the inspiration for the final piece. The image included children in TUSD participating in Fine Arts activities such as drama, dance, mariachi, band, folklorico and painting. The background is of the blooming Sonoran Desert after the monsoon rains, with Saguaros and Arizona poppies blooming. The mural also includes the essential pollinator, hummingbirds. In this mural, Leanne aimed to "capture the best of TUSD, it's students, our excellence in Fine Arts and the beauty of the Sonoran Desert, the most bio-diverse desert in the world." Leanne C. Miller, MFA, Curator of Art and Artifacts   RUHS Jazz Ensemble I Selected to Perform at the 2026 AMEA Conference The Rincon/University High School Jazz Ensemble I has been selected through a highly competitive process to perform at the 2026 Arizona Music Educators Association (AMEA) Annual In-Service Conference. This distinction places the ensemble among only six performing groups statewide chosen to appear at the event, recognizing their exceptional musicianship and educational excellence. This marks the ensemble’s third invitation to perform at the state conference, following appearances in 2018 and 2023. The performance will take place at the Mesa Convention Center on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. The RUHS Jazz Ensemble I will share the program with the Pueblo Middle School Concert Band from the Kyrene School District in Chandler, Arizona. All concerts at the AMEA Conference are free and open to the public. Parents, district colleagues, and administrators are encouraged to attend and join in celebrating this outstanding achievement by Tucson Unified School District’s own Rincon/University High School Jazz Ensemble I. Jeff Marchant - Band Director, Rincon/University High School   Mini Masterpieces Mesmerize at Ford We have a wonderful display up at Ford Elementary of Kinder and 1st Grade "Mini Masterpieces". Students drew about something that made them smile/happy. They each wrote (or said a sentence) that stated what their picture was portraying. The display was installed by Mrs. Heather Martin, and labels made by Mrs. Tammy Snow.  Sarah Howard - OMA Teaching Artist, Visual Arts   Ivesia Dancing on Tour in TUSD! During the month of November, dancers from Rincon/University High School's Ivesia dance class went on tour to eight different TUSD elementary schools, bringing their original choreography developed specifically for young audiences to hundreds of elementary school students. It was a magical and memorable experience for performers and audiences alike! Allyson Yoder - Dance Director, Rincon/University High School   Robot Fun at Booth-Fickett! The young kids did coloring of the different shapes according to the correct color. While the older kids did the coloring then created their own robot with pre-cut shapes again in the correct color. Thomas Holaday - OMA Visual Arts Teacher, Booth/Fickett K-8   End-of-Semester EMC Tips How did December get here so quickly? Each year, it seems to come upon us faster than before. With that in mind, remember to email or call (x54783) us about scheduling your upcoming returns. Keep in mind that Don only works two days a week. You might want to consider returning your items the week of the 8th instead of the following week. Are we open Grading Day? Yes - with a caveat. Lee Instructional Resource Center might not be open until 5 on Grading Day. If you wish to stop by in person, call first to be sure we are still in. Finally - having trouble reaching either of us individually via Outlook? There's a trick for that! Email emc1@tusd1.org and you'll reach BOTH of us! We also recommend you submit a Jira request to find out what's up with that email... Have a fantastic Break!
