  • Superintendent Community Newsletter - March 6, 2026

Superintendent's Message March 6, 2026 Dear JUHSD Students and Families, As we move through the spring semester, I want to take a moment to highlight the important role that ongoing learning plays not only for our students, but also for the dedicated staff who support them every day. Continuous professional development allows our teachers, counselors, and staff members to strengthen their skills, explore new instructional strategies, and collaborate with colleagues to better meet the needs of all students. On Wednesday, March 11, our district will hold a Staff Development Day, and there will be no school for students. On this day, educators across the district will participate in workshops, collaboration sessions, and training focused on improving instruction, supporting student well-being, and enhancing the overall learning experience in our schools. Investing in our staff is an investment in our students. When educators have the opportunity to learn, reflect, and grow professionally, it directly benefits the quality of teaching and support our students receive every day. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our schools and the ongoing growth of our learning community. With Appreciation Toni Presta Superintendent JUHSD Celebrates Women's History Month This March, our district proudly celebrates Women’s History Month. We honor the women who have strengthened our schools, enriched our communities, and inspired future generations through leadership, innovation, and service. Together, we celebrate their achievements and recommit to empowering the leaders of tomorrow.   JUHSD Celebrates Arts Education Month March is Arts Education Month, a time to celebrate the vital role the arts play in our schools and communities. • Superintendent Community Newsletter - February 13, 2026

Superintendent's Message February 13, 2026 Dear JUHSD Students and Families, This upcoming week offers many meaningful opportunities for both celebration and reflection as we recognize Valentine’s Day, Random Acts of Kindness Week, Presidents’ Day, Lunar New Year, and World Day of Social Justice. These observances, while distinct, share a common thread: the importance of connection, compassion, and our collective responsibility to one another. They remind us that even the simplest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. A thoughtful gesture, a word of encouragement, or a moment of understanding can brighten someone’s day and help foster a culture of care within our schools. When kindness is modeled and practiced, it contributes to learning environments where students feel safe, supported, and valued. World Day of Social Justice further invites us to reflect on our shared commitment to equity, dignity, and inclusion. It serves as an important reminder of the role education plays in nurturing empathy, broadening perspectives, and empowering students to become thoughtful, engaged members of their communities. Thank you for your continued partnership in creating schools rooted in respect, compassion, and belonging for all. Black history is foundational to American history, and learning it helps us better understand our past, our present, and our shared responsibility for a more just future. In our schools, this month invites reflection, meaningful learning, and opportunities for students to see themselves reflected in the curriculum. By honoring Black voices and experiences, we reaffirm our commitment to equity, respect, and belonging for all. 50 Fascinating Black History Month Facts for Students       Random Acts of Kindness Week reminds us that even small gestures can have a powerful impact. When children and youth see kindness modeled, they are more likely to practice it themselves. We encourage our community to take part by doing something kind for others and helping create a safer, more caring San Mateo County for all.   Happy Lunar New Year! • Superintendent Community Newsletter - February 6, 2026

Superintendent's Message Dear JUHSD Students and Families, Last Friday, many of our students across all JUHSD campuses participated in student-led protests and walkouts in response to recent events in Minneapolis and across the country. I recognize that the student walkouts raised questions and differing perspectives, including both hope and pride, as well as upset that the district allowed this to occur.  While JUHSD did not sponsor or organize the student-led protests or walkouts, we remain committed to upholding students’ rights to free speech under the First Amendment and Education Code § 48205. Throughout the day last Friday, our focus remained on protecting those rights while maintaining a safe and supportive environment and ensuring instruction continued for students who chose to remain on campus.  We are living in a time of significant political polarization, which presents real challenges for schools, families, and communities alike. As educators and school leaders, I believe it is essential that we help students learn how to engage respectfully with one another, think critically, and grow into responsible global citizens. JUHSD students are our future, and they will carry the responsibility of shaping a world grounded in compassion, understanding, and kindness. They are counting on all of us to work together in support of their learning and well-being. This work is only possible through strong partnerships with our staff, families, and community.  I remain extremely proud of our staff and students, and thank you for your continued support and partnership. With Care, Toni Presta Superintendent Family Safety Resources Black History Month is a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Black individuals who have shaped our nation and our world. • Superintendent Community Newsletter - January 30, 2026

Superintendent's Message Dear JUHSD Students and Families, Many of our students, families, and staff are experiencing grief, fear, and anger in response to recent events in Minneapolis and across the country. I want to begin by acknowledging the weight of this moment and the very real impact it is having on all members of our school communities. During times like these, it is especially important to pause, listen, and care for one another. At JUHSD, we are guided by who we are as a community, one that is rooted in compassion, dignity, and mutual respect. Even when emotions run high, we remain committed to coming together, supporting our students, and ensuring that every individual feels seen, valued, and safe. Last evening, I shared a message with the JUHSD community regarding a planned student-led protest for today. If you missed that communication, it can be found here. JUHSD’s collective focus continues to be student safety, dignity, and learning. Our schools strive to create environments where students can express their views respectfully and thoughtfully, while also using this moment as an opportunity for civic learning around democracy, free speech, and peaceful engagement. As always, we are here to support you and your students as we navigate the world around us during this challenging time. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or immediate concerns. We are grateful for the strength, care, and unity of our community. Superintendent's Message Dear JUHSD Students and Families, This week, as we approach the International Day of Education on January 24, I want to recognize the important role education plays in opening doors, building confidence, and shaping futures, both here in our district and around the world. For our students, education is about discovering your strengths, exploring your interests, and preparing for what comes next. Whether you are learning in the classroom, participating in CTE programs, athletics, arts, or student leadership, each experience helps you grow and prepares you for life beyond high school. For our families, your partnership and support are essential. The encouragement you provide at home and your engagement with our schools make a meaningful difference in student success. Together, we are creating learning environments where students feel supported, challenged, and valued. The International Day of Education is also a reminder of our shared commitment to equity, access, and opportunity for every student, regardless of background or circumstance. I am proud of the work happening across Jefferson Union High School District and grateful to be part of a community that believes in the power of education. • Superintendent Community Newsletter - January 16, 2026

Superintendent's Message Dear JUHSD Students and Families, In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, all JUHSD school sites and district offices will be closed. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to the pursuit of a more just and equitable society, one in which every individual is respected and valued, regardless of race, ability, religion, or background. His vision continues to guide and challenge us. As we honor his legacy, we are reminded that many of the struggles Dr. King worked tirelessly to eradicate are still present in our society today. This day serves not only as a time of reflection, but also as a call to action. We invite our community to join us in recommitting to the ongoing work of equity, inclusion, and justice for all. Together, may we continue to learn from Dr. King’s example and take meaningful steps, both individually and collectively, to help make his dream a reality within our schools and throughout our community. With Gratitude, Toni Presta Superintendent Jefferson Union High School District ANNOUNCEMENT OF JUHSD BOARD VACANCY At the December 16, 2025 board meeting, Trustee Cho provided verbal notification to the board of his intent to resign due to a move outside of the district boundaries. • THS Newsletter 1/16/26

Thornton High School Newsletter January 16, 2026   Principal's Message Dear Thornton High School Community, Happy New Year and welcome to 2026! I wish each of you a year filled with growth, health, and new opportunities. As we begin our Third Quarter, this is a great time to reset, refocus, and recommit to the goals that brought us here. Strong attendance continues to be one of the most important habits for student success. Showing up each day—on time and ready to learn—builds momentum and confidence. We encourage students to prioritize healthy habits, including sleep, nutrition, and balance between school and life. Taking care of yourself is essential. Our Third Quarter is also a chance to step outside of your comfort zone. Try something new, ask questions, and stay curious about your learning. Growth happens when we challenge ourselves, even when it feels uncomfortable at first. To our students: have confidence in your journey. Your high school diploma is not a question of “if,” but “when.” With consistency, effort, and support, it is only a matter of time. Please note that Monday, January 19th, is a school holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday, January 20th as we continue moving forward together. With gratitude, Dennie Marenco, Ed.D. • Superintendent Community Newsletter - January 9, 2026

Superintendent's Message Dear JUHSD Students and Families, As we return from winter break, many of us are welcoming the new year with both hope and reflection. For our seniors, this marks the beginning of the final stretch of their high school journey, a time filled with anticipation, milestones, and important next steps. While the start of a new year often brings thoughts of fresh beginnings, this year, we are also mindful that many across our country and around the world are facing significant challenges. In this context, our excitement is tempered by compassion and awareness. This moment calls on us to be grateful for the blessings we have and to lean into kindness, empathy, and service. Within our own community, there are students, families, and staff who may need additional support and resources. Please know that our district remains committed to being a source of stability, care, and connection. I encourage each of you to look out for those in need and to move forward with understanding and compassion. Wishing you a healthy, hopeful start to the year.
