The power of summer learning As we head into summer, it’s time to celebrate a year of hard work, growth, and learning. While summer is a well-deserved break, it’s also an important time to keep young minds active and curious. Research shows that even small, consistent learning activities over the summer can help students retain skills and be ready for a strong start in the fall. But summer learning doesn’t need to look like homework. It can be fun, meaningful, and connected to everyday life. Here are a few ways families can support learning over the summer: Read, read, read! Whether it’s comic books, novels, or reading recipes together, regular reading builds vocabulary, comprehension, and a love for stories. Explore your world. Visit a museum, go on a nature walk, cook a new recipe, or try a do-it-yourself science experiment. Curiosity is a great teacher. Play with numbers. Practice math in real life, through games, cooking measurements, or budgeting for a summer treat. Write for fun. Encourage journaling, letter writing, or making a comic strip. Any kind of writing keeps skills fresh. We hope you have a wonderful summer filled with rest, adventure, and discovery. Thank you for your partnership this school year. We can’t wait to see your students again in the fall. Free summer library events around the Gorge Looking for ways to keep your child's mind sharp, creative, and engaged this summer? From the local battle of the books practices to hands-on family STEAM nights, community libraries across the Gorge are hosting free events and reading challenges all summer long. Encouraging just 20 minutes of daily reading—whether through physical books, comic books, or free audiobooks on SORA—prevents the summer slide and keeps your student's imagination buzzing. Click here to read the full article to explore the complete calendar of weekly storytimes, summer markets, and science labs happening right in your neighborhood! iPad guidance information session June 16 Our school district has been evaluating the role of school-issued devices in the classroom. To support this effort, we have worked with small groups of educators, school leaders, and parents to develop draft guidance for both Grades K–2 and Grades 3–5. This work focuses on establishing intentional, purposeful, and limited use of iPads for our elementary students. The draft guidance aims to ensure that device use remains developmentally appropriate and instructionally focused for our youngest learners, while applying those same balanced principles to the upper elementary grade band. Community Feedback Meeting The next phase of this process relies on community input. Our school district will share this draft guidance and gather feedback from families at an upcoming community meeting: Date: Tuesday, June 16 Time: 6pm to 7pm Location: Hood River Valley High School Library Staff and parents are encouraged to attend, review the draft guidance for both grade bands (k-2 and 3-5), and share their thoughts. Please contact Teaching and Learning Executive Director Amy McConnell at amy.mcconnell@hoodriver.k12.or.us with questions or comments. New student enrollment open for 2026-27 We are enrolling kindergarteners and new students for the 2026-27 school year. Important information: Eligibility: Children who will be five years old by September 1, 2026, are eligible for kindergarten. New students: This process is for children who did not attend an HRCSD school during the current 2025-26 school year. How to enroll and get help Families must complete the online enrollment form available on our website. For full details, attendance maps, and to start the enrollment process, please visit the HRCSD Enrollment webpage or email hrcsd.enrollment@hoodriver.k12.or.us. Give your kindergartener a jump start this fall Help your incoming student step into the new school year with total confidence! Hood River County School District is excited to offer Jump Start Kindergarten, a free, state-grant-funded summer program designed to help children ease into school routines, explore their classrooms, meet teachers, and make new friends. Running from August 17 through August 21 (7:30am to 1:30pm) at Cascade Locks, May Street, Parkdale, and Westside elementary schools—and during summer school for Mid Valley Elementary—this program ensures our youngest learners start day one with joy and familiarity. Please complete this Google Form to reserve your child's spot by Monday, June 29. If you have any questions or need more details, please reach out directly to HRCSD Communications Director Stephanie Hoppe at stephanie.hoppe@hoodriver.k12.or.us. Upcoming system change: PowerSchool moving to Synergy on August 1 Starting next school year, our school district is transitioning from PowerSchool to a more modern, user-friendly system called Synergy (featuring ParentVUE and StudentVUE). To transfer our data safely, there will be a system blackout from July 1 to August 1, during which online enrollment and registration will be temporarily unavailable. We will send out detailed tutorials and account setup instructions over the summer. Click here to read the full article to learn more about why we are making the switch and how to plan around the July blackout period. ParentSquare settings updating to "Digest" In our recent surveys and focus groups, many families shared that the volume of messages throughout the day can feel overwhelming. To help streamline your inbox, our school district is updating all default ParentSquare settings to a single daily "Digest" sent at 6pm. If you have already customized your notifications this year, your preferences will not change. For everyone else, this update takes the work out of managing school news. Click here to read the full article and learn how to customize your preferences for emails, texts, or app notifications. Call for volunteers to help build Phase 1 of Westside's playground Westside's Playground Rebuild Phase 1 is kicking off this summer, and we are calling in all parents and community members with construction, landscaping, engineering, woodworking, equipment, or artistic experience, especially with murals/large-scale stencils, to help us build. The City will finish installing the bike lane on the east side of 17th Street from May to Sherman Avenue. Please remember that parking is not allowed in bike lanes. Additionally, the City will be making upgrades to the drop/off and pick/up zone on May Street to improve student safety, traffic flow and provide parking in the after-school hours. As always, please be sure to always use extra caution when driving in school zones, and obey all speed limits and traffic signals. For more information on safe routes to school in Hood River, visit https://cityofhoodriver.gov/community/safe-routes-to-schools/ Staying safe and "Smoke Ready" in the Gorge this summer As we head into a well-deserved summer break, it is important to remember that our unique Columbia River Gorge winds can cause wildfire and smoke conditions to shift rapidly. You can protect your household by managing your "Home Ignition Zone," clearing dry leaves and pine needles within 5 feet of your home and covering vents with 1/8-inch metal mesh to block flying embers. When smoke hits, protect your indoor air by running your HVAC system with a MERV 13 filter, or build a quick DIY air cleaner by securing a MERV 13 filter to the back of a standard box fan. Before you unplug for the season, take a few minutes to bookmark these local resources so your family is prepared to monitor air quality and fire activity in real-time: Local Alerts and Air Quality: Visit SmokeReadyGorge.org for regional smoke readiness checklists and county emergency alert sign-ups. Home Defensible Space: Read the OSU Extension Hood River Preparedness Guide (EM 9428) for details on protecting your property from embers. Indoor Clean Air: Learn how to set up a dedicated "clean room" and filter out smoke at the OSU Extension Indoor Air Guide (EM 9379). • Community News: HRVHS graduation tomorrow (6/5), cel...

Community News Excellence. Every student. Every day. Superintendent Message Dear Hood River County School District community, As we approach the final days of the school year, I want to pause to look back on everything our students have accomplished and express my deepest gratitude to our families and community members. Education is a true partnership, and our students thrive because of your generous support, involvement, and encouragement. This Friday marks an incredibly special milestone for our school district as our seniors participate in the annual grad walks and graduation ceremony. The grad walks tradition is always a highlight of the year, allowing our graduates to return to their childhood elementary and middle schools in their caps and gowns before the evening ceremony. They are returning to where their educational journeys began to thank the teachers and support staff who shaped them and to inspire the next generation of students following in their footsteps. For many of you who have watched these children grow from kindergartners into young adults, it is a beautifully emotional, full-circle moment. When our seniors walk across the graduation stage later that night, it will be a celebration of their hard work, the incredible dedication of our staff, and the unconditional love and support you have provided every step of the way. Every milestone achieved on that stage reflects a shared effort. We see it at home in the late-night homework help at your kitchen tables, the morning routines, and the endless encouragement you offered through the tough days. We also see it in our schools, where our teachers pour their hearts into every lesson, and where our dedicated community volunteers generously give their time to mentor, tutor, and support our programs. We also see it in every corner of our school district, from our bus drivers and nutrition services teams to our custodians, counselors, and administrative staff who keep our buildings safe, warm, and running smoothly. The success of our students is a testament to the powerful connection between our families, schools, and community. The academic excellence and personal growth we celebrate this week are a direct result of this shared commitment to helping our youth succeed. Because of this collective support, our graduates are stepping into their futures equipped with the knowledge, resilience, and courage to learn, serve, and pursue their dreams. Seeing our seniors ready to take on the world fills me with an overwhelming sense of optimism. If the future is in the hands of the young people we are sending out into the world this Friday, then we all have a lot to look forward to. Thank you for your continued partnership, your trust, and for sharing your incredible children with us. To our families, staff, and community, I wish you all a safe, happy, and restful summer break. Sincerely, Bill Newton, Superintendent Photo: This spring, our elementary students wrapped up an amazing, hands-on unit on the Oregon Trail.   News and Updates Important dates School board meeting information Celebrating a legacy of dedication: 283 years of combined service We are writers in Hood River County Migrant Education Program graduates Caden Tubbs named Outstanding Lead Performer, headed to Broadway Parkdale Elementary hosts bike-a-thon Summer meals information iPad guidance information session June 16 Jump Start Kindergarten information Medication pick-up information Staying safe and "Smoke Ready" in the Gorge this summer Call for student art Call for volunteers to help build Phase 1 of Westside's playground Career opportunities in our schools Community Resources Special Olympics information FACT Oregon information Link Center information Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta's Piano Summit 2026 Flag Retirement Ceremony Summer Kidz Camp (Week 4): Drama + Imagination Camp Summer youth music lessons Summer track and field camp Gear up for Eagle youth soccer camp Kick off summer with soccer tots Unleash creativity at summer kids camp: Create and explore Lace up for youth running clinic Hit the court for summer hoop camp Dine out with Wy'east PTO Columbia Gorge Rugby Club camp Community rummage sale HRVPRD Summer Kidz Camp Make it a summer to remember at Champ Camp News and Updates Important dates Wednesday, June 10: Last day of school for students To view the full school calendar and next year's school calendar, visit this HRCSD webpage. Together, these dedicated professionals have contributed a phenomenal 283 years of combined service to our students, schools, and community. Please join us in extending our deepest gratitude and warmest congratulations to this year’s retirees: Ben Bisbee Brent Emmons Heidi Mudry Teri Bauman Cindy Sparks Colleen Paulus Katherine Jacobson Paula Lindquist-Ihle Ayme Hooper Lisa Crompton Amy Wheeler Sean Corcoran Gabriela Chavez Malo Elizabeth Jones Whether serving in the classroom, supporting school operations, maintaining our facilities, or ensuring our technology runs smoothly, each of these individuals has brought incredible energy, passion, and unwavering commitment to HRCSD every single day. They have shaped futures, inspired colleagues, and left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of generations of students. While they will be deeply missed across the district, their collective legacy will be felt for years to come. We wish each of them the very best as they embark on this next exciting chapter! We are writers in Hood River County This year, across our schools, writing was an intentional focus, and we are proud of the growth we have seen in students as writers. From early ideas to more developed explanations, narratives, and arguments, students have been building confidence and skill in communicating their thinking across all subject areas. As summer begins, we encourage families to help keep this momentum going in simple, meaningful ways at home. Writing does not need to look like a worksheet or formal assignment; small, everyday opportunities make a big difference. Students might: Write postcards or emails to family and friends Keep a summer journal about trips, activities, or even everyday moments Create comic strips, stories, or captions for photos Write “how-to” guides (how to build something, play a game, or cook a snack) Make lists, plans, or reviews of books, movies, or places they visit Start a shared family story where each person adds a page or paragraph Pairing writing with reading is especially powerful. When students notice how authors write, they naturally begin to try those strategies in their own work. Thank you for partnering with us in supporting your child’s learning. We are excited to build on this year’s growth when students return, and we hope your summer includes plenty of reading, writing, and storytelling along the way. Migrant Education Program graduates Students in the Migrant Education Program have participated consistently over the past three years. Because many of their families move for seasonal work, students often face challenges that can impact attendance, academic progress, and graduation. The Migrant Education Program provides essential support services that help improve attendance and test scores while connecting students with counselors and resources to stay on track for graduation. The program also helps students build valuable life skills outside the classroom. Through opportunities such as summer school employment and programs like Viento y Agua, students gain leadership, work experience, and confidence. We are proud of these resilient students who overcome language barriers, frequent moves, and family responsibilities while continuing to pursue their education. Many graduate from high school and go on to further education, using the program as a bridge to future success. Caden Tubbs named Outstanding Lead Performer, headed to Broadway! Congratulations to local student Caden Tubbs, who has been officially named the Outstanding Lead Performer for the 2026 Hult High School Musical Theatre Awards! This incredible achievement earns Caden a $700 educational scholarship and the prestigious honor of representing the entire state of Oregon at the upcoming Jimmy Awards® in New York City. This life-changing opportunity will allow Caden to join an elite group of young performers from across the nation to collaborate with Broadway professionals, make lifelong connections, and ultimately perform live on a real Broadway stage at the Minskoff Theater. The community is incredibly proud of Caden's hard work and talent, and we cannot wait to cheer them on as they take a bite out of the Big Apple! Parkdale Elementary hosts first ever bike-a-thon Parkdale PE teacher Mr. Dixon took it upon himself to teach every student at Parkdale Elementary how to ride a bike, and he does it with enthusiasm and heart. During the winter, students sharpen their skills on balance bikes in the gym. This spring, they spent three weeks riding a traffic garden course that Mr. Dixon sets up and breaks down each day. He assigns student medics and mechanics, fostering a culture in which students learn to take care of both their bikes and each other. The results speak for themselves: Parkdale has the highest student ridership rate in the school district, with nearly 99% of students able to ride. That bike culture was on full display Tuesday as Parkdale Elementary hosted the school district's first-ever bike-a-thon. Students rode lap after lap on a fun course while raising money for their school. A special thank you to the Parkdale PTO for embracing a new event, organizing, and recruiting volunteers to count laps as riders zoomed by. We can't wait to see this new tradition grow! iPad guidance information session June 16 Our school district has been evaluating the role of school-issued devices in the classroom. Summer meals information To ensure no child goes hungry this summer, our school district is offering free daily breakfast and lunch for all kids ages 1 to 18 from June 22 through August 21. Families can visit Mid Valley Elementary School for meals—with breakfast served from 7:30am to 8am and lunch from 10:30am to 12:30pm—or connect with one of the many convenient mobile meal pickup sites operating throughout the morning. These mobile routes service various neighborhoods across Cascade Locks, Hood River, and the Upper Valley, making short, timed stops at local parks, schools, and community hubs to reach as many families as possible. Because schedules are subject to change, parents are encouraged to visit www.hoodriver.k12.or.us for the most up-to-date pickup locations and exact arrival times. End-of-year medication pickup As we approach the end of the school year, the health office team wants to thank you for a wonderful and healthy year! Please remember to pick up any student medications currently stored in the health office by the last day of school. Here are a few important details to keep in mind: No Summer Storage: We are unable to store medications over the summer months. Disposal Policy: Any medications not picked up by the last day of school will be safely discarded according to district policy and proper medication disposal guidelines. We’re Here to Help: If you have any questions or need to make special arrangements for pickup, please contact your school's main office or health office directly. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe and healthy! Staying safe and "Smoke Ready" in the Gorge this summer As we head into a well-deserved summer break, it is important to remember that our unique Columbia River Gorge winds can cause wildfire and smoke conditions to shift rapidly. Have a wonderful, restful, and safe summer! Call for student art: Help celebrate the natural beauty of Hood River County Our school district is offering students an opportunity to submit photography that highlights the incredible natural beauty and cultural heritage of our region, from Mount Hood and the Columbia River to our local orchards and forests. Selected photographs will be professionally printed, permanently displayed, and honored with a formal plaque with the student artist's name. Students may submit up to 10 photos by emailing them to Stephanie Hoppe at stephanie.hoppe@hoodriver.k12.or.us. Please ensure each submission includes the location where the photo was taken. We look forward to seeing the unique perspectives and landscapes that make our community so special! SEED survey During the month of May, students in the Hood River County School District will have the opportunity to take part in the SEED Survey. The SEED Survey gathers data from students statewide, in grades 3-11. The content of the survey varies by grade level. The survey measures student perceptions in four core domains: Access to learning resources, Opportunity to learn, Self-efficacy, and Sense of belonging. The survey is available in multiple languages. Oregon school districts must make the SEED survey available to all students in grades 3-11 and provide 15-20 minutes of one school day to complete the survey. However, students are not required to participate. Students are allowed to skip any question they do not want to answer and families can contact their school if they would like their child not to participate in any capacity. SEED Survey information may also help districts develop a fuller picture of their local contexts and make strategic modifications to curriculum, instruction, and para-academic supports that they offer students. For more information click on this link A Team Approach to Technology update Following our school district’s transition to a K–12 phone-free environment, work has continued on evaluating the role of school-issued devices in the classroom. A community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, from 6pm to 7pm at the Hood River Valley High School Library. District leadership will share the K–2 draft guidance and provide updates on the progress of the elementary and AI working groups. Staff and families are invited to attend and provide feedback.
