Elevate SCH: April 2026 Newsletter
Elevate SCH Elevating Excellence, Restoring Unity Message from the Superintendent: Happy April! I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break and stands ready to finish the rest of the year strong. As we head into the final stretch of the school year, April arrives with a sense of renewal and growth. This month is particularly special as we celebrate Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. In our district, we don’t just recognize neurodiversity; we embrace it. Our classrooms are strengthened by the unique perspectives and talents of our students with autism. I encourage everyone to move beyond mere awareness and toward true acceptance by fostering an environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued for exactly who they are. April is also a month of deep gratitude. We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated team of paraprofessionals, librarians, assistant principals, and administrative professionals who support our students every day. We also owe a great deal of thanks to our bus drivers who ensure safe travels and the volunteers who give so generously of their time. Whether it is in the classroom, the library, or on the road, I am incredibly proud of the progress our students make thanks to this incredible support system. Thank you for your continued partnership in making our district a place where every learner can shine. Warm regards, Anthony O. Salinas, Ed.S. This space is dedicated to celebrating the compassion, helpfulness, and big hearts found in every corner of our district, from our students and staff to our wonderful families. O’Bannon Elementary: March Positive Office Referrals We are kicking off this month’s Kindness Corner by celebrating some very special leaders at O’Bannon Elementary. Throughout the month of March, these students received Positive Office Referrals for their outstanding character and for making their school a better place through their actions. Take a look at the smiling faces below. We are so proud of these students for setting such a great example and for reminding us all that a little extra kindness goes a long way. Hess Elementary: Spreading Inspiration The spirit of giving continues at Hess Elementary! During the month of February, our Hess Hawks Student Council created an interactive Kindness wall. This wonderful project allowed students to leave an inspiring note for others or take a note to keep when they needed some kind words. The wall has been so helpful to those in need that we have decided to keep it up. A huge thank you goes out to our Student Council and their staff sponsors, Mrs. Meece and Mrs. Stringer, for creating such a meaningful way to support one another. Morton High School: Kindness and Awareness Over at Morton High School, the library has become a hub for positivity and inclusion. Tabitha Poland shared their beautiful Kindness Campaign and Disability Awareness displays. These displays serve as a powerful reminder of how important it is to uplift our peers and celebrate the diverse abilities that make our school community so strong. Elevate SCH: March 2026-Newsletter
Elevate SCH Elevating Excellence, Restoring Unity Message from the Superintendent: March Forward Together Dear School City of Hammond Families and Community, As we move through March, I am proud of the continued progress across the School City of Hammond. Our students, staff, and families continue to show what is possible when we work together with focus and care. This month, we recognize National School Social Work Week from March 1 through March 7. We extend our sincere thanks to our school social workers for the vital role they play in supporting students and families every day. Their compassion, advocacy, and commitment help remove barriers so our students can thrive. March is also Women’s History Month and National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. These observances remind us to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women and to reaffirm our commitment to inclusive environments where every student is valued, supported, and empowered. State testing is underway this month. The IREAD assessment for our second and third grade students is especially important because it measures the foundational reading skills that are critical for long term success. We ask families to partner with us by ensuring students get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time every single day during the testing window. These simple habits make a powerful difference in student confidence and performance. Our eleventh grade students will also be taking the SAT during this window, and strong attendance and punctuality are equally important. Thank you for your continued partnership and support of the School City of Hammond. Together, we are building strong readers, strong schools, and strong futures for every student. Warm regards, Anthony O. Salinas, Ed.S. Acting Superintendent Women’s History Month Throughout March, the School City of Hammond proudly recognizes Women’s History Month. We celebrate the achievements, leadership, and lasting contributions of women who continue to inspire our students, schools, and community every day. National School Social Work Week From March 1 through March 7, the School City of Hammond proudly recognizes National School Social Work Week. We thank our dedicated school social workers for their compassion, advocacy, and unwavering support of our students and families. Their work makes a meaningful difference in our schools every day. March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month This month, we are proud to join the nationwide observance of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! It is an important time for our community to come together to promote inclusion, celebrate the incredible contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities, and continue our work to remove barriers to accessibility. We remain dedicated to fostering a supportive, empowering, and welcoming environment for all of our students, staff, and families Celebrating National School Breakfast Week! This week is National School Breakfast Week, and we want to take a special moment to send a huge, heartfelt thank you to our incredible Food Service staff across the School City of Hammond! Every morning, our dedicated cafeteria teams are up early, preparing nutritious and delicious meals to ensure our students start their day ready to learn, focus, and succeed. Thank you for all that you do to keep us going! Reflecting on a Powerful Black History Month We recently wrapped up what was truly a positive, engaging, and meaningful month of celebrating Black History across the School City of Hammond. Thank you to everyone who attended events and supported these important learning opportunities for our students. Your participation helped make this month impactful across our district. As we enter a new month, we remain committed to continuing the celebration of Black history, culture, and the achievements of our students and community. Black history is American history, and that celebration continues in our schools every day. Around our Schools Pride on Display at Inaugural JROTC Color Guard Competition This past Friday, we were proud to host the inaugural JROTC Color Guard Competition at Hammond Central High School against East Chicago Central.
