News for May 13, 2026 Student Creativity on Display! The Roseville Area Schools District Art Show is on display through May 21 at the Ramsey County Library-Roseville (2180 North Hamline Ave.). Featuring nearly 30 student artworks from every district school, this inspiring exhibit celebrates our students and their creativity and imagination!   One World Brings Community Together Through Food, Culture, and Celebration 🌎 Roseville Area Schools’ One World event, held May 7 at Roseville Area High School, was a joyful celebration of the people, cultures, traditions, and connections that make our district such a vibrant community. Planned by the district’s cultural liaisons, the evening featured outstanding performances and a large buffet representing many of the cultures and communities reflected in our students and families. A special thank you to the Roseville Police Department for their ongoing partnership and support of this event — they were fantastic food servers and helped make the evening even more welcoming and memorable.   Courage and Compassion: Honoring Our First Responders At last night's school board meeting, we had the opportunity to meet and thank a number of first responders – both in our schools and in our community – who played a critical role during an emergency situation in one of our schools. I want to again express my sincere gratitude for their commitment, professionalism, quick response, and extensive training. We also heard from members of our school nurse team, student services team, and buildings and grounds team as they presented a cardiac emergency response plan for board approval. This important work reflects our ongoing commitment to safety and preparedness across our district and will strengthen our response to sudden cardiac arrest on school grounds. With more than 7,000 students, 1,000 staff members, and countless visitors in our buildings each day, it is essential that our district has strong plans in place and trusted partnerships to ensure we can respond to emergencies in ways that provide the best possible chance to save lives. I have witnessed firsthand the skill, care, and composure of both our district staff and our community’s first responders during these situations, and I am truly confident in their abilities. The individuals who serve in these roles are very special people who support our communities with selfless bravery, compassion, and dedication, and we are deeply appreciative of all they do. Because of their work, our schools and community are safer places each and every day.   “A Magical Place”: RAHS Wood Shop and Teacher Jeff Davies Featured on Beyond the Breaker Podcast During the most recent Beyond the Breaker podcast episode, “Why Shop Class Matters,” podcast hosts interviewed Roseville Area High School teacher Jeff Davies about the value of hands-on learning and the growing opportunities available to students through woodworking and trades education. Davies is a 31-year teaching veteran who teaches Woods, Construction Trades, and Architectural Design/Drafting courses in the Career and Technology Education department at Roseville Area High School. The conversation focused on the importance of career and technical education, noting that electives and trades programs are receiving greater recognition and support. The podcast also highlighted RAHS course offerings, woodworking and trades classes, student projects, industry partnerships, the many features of the school’s wood shop, and career opportunities. Davies shared that advanced students have built everything from canoes and paddle boards to custom cabinets and canoe paddles. “If it’s made of wood, my advanced classes have tried to make it,” Davies noted. He also described the collaborative and self-driven atmosphere inside the RAHS wood shop. “I’ll sit back when things are hitting on all cylinders and look at the shop — and it’s a magical place,” he shared. “Everybody is on task. I’m not having to stand over your shoulder and keep you on task. It’s just going. It’s a lot of fun.” 🔗 Watch the full podcast   Early Childhood Students Explore Native American Culture Four Early Childhood staff members – Emma Horner, Sara Miller, Lis Moriarty, and Patty Orme – have teamed with American Indian Education Coordinator Gabriella Carroll and American Indian Cultural Liaison Savannah Rojas about incorporating Native American books, art, and educational cultural experiences within our early childhood classrooms. Their involvement gave students meaningful opportunities to explore careers, ask questions, and make real-world connections—helping students better understand the opportunities ahead.   RAHS Scholarship Celebration Honors Student Achievement Roseville Area High School’s Scholarship Celebration on April 27 was a powerful evening honoring both student achievement and community generosity. For our Roseville Area community, one-time scholarships, students received $81,000.  Additionally, the evening honored students receiving recurring $4,000/year scholarships from AAUW and Wallin Partners, to the total of $144,000 over four years. The evening celebrated students receiving comprehensive awards from their schools or external programs, totaling $659,000 over four years. Notably, Gabriel Robuck received the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship to Rice University.  In total, RAHS students earned $884,000 in scholarships!   Thank You to Our Community! Last week, I had the honor of hosting a table at Roseville Area Middle School’s Career Café, and I left feeling deeply grateful. Dozens of community members, organizations, and staff members showed up for our students—sharing their time, their experiences, and an honest look at careers spanning health care, engineering, education, human resources, law enforcement, personal care, and more. The conversations were thoughtful and engaging, offering students a chance to ask questions and make connections. That same spirit of generosity was on display again on Monday night at Roseville Area High School’s Scholarship Celebration, where our grade 12 students were honored as scholarship recipients. It was a powerful reminder of how deeply our community cares about our students and their futures. I am incredibly thankful for the individuals and organizations who continue to invest their time, expertise, and money in our young people, and for our staff who support our students as they learn and grow. In Partnership, Jenny   May is Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Roseville Area Schools recognizes Asian American Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month as a time to honor the cultures, histories, and contributions of these communities. It’s a chance for students to see themselves reflected in what they learn and for all of us to better understand one another. Moments like this help build a stronger sense of belonging across our schools.   Little Canada Third Graders Connect Through Global Exchange Third graders at Little Canada Elementary recently created a mural connecting Minnesota and Uruguay to celebrate as part of an exchange with second graders in La Pedrera. Beginning in October, students wrote letters in Spanish introducing themselves and sharing life in Minnesota, then used those letters as scripts for videos that launched an ongoing exchange of school tours, questions, and conversations. According to teacher Meghan Hesterman, students built meaningful connections and gained a deeper understanding of Uruguayan culture.   Edgerton Pride Tie-Dye Takeover! 🎨✨ Edgerton Elementary School's 6th grade Pride group got creative with tie-dye as they gear up for their upcoming field trip to Central Park Elementary—and for many, it was their first time with tie-dye! The results? Bright, bold, and totally unique.   Harambee Hosts School-wide Earth Day Celebration Harambee Elementary celebrated Earth Day on April 24 with a schoolwide day of environmental learning and action. With support from donors and community partners, students planted 160 mini greenhouses with native pollinator plants and explored the school’s trail system. Fifth and sixth graders learned to measure tree diameter and heard a Dakota story from the MN DNR School Forest program, while sixth graders also led a campus cleanup supported by Cub Foods. Younger students engaged in hands-on activities, including bird adaptations, fish habitats and printing, and planting a pollinator-friendly rain garden with Great River Greening.   🎉 You’re Invited to the Roseville Area Schools One World Event! 🌍 Join us for an evening full of culture and community! News for April 15, 2026 DLSI Seniors Shine at Capstone Celebration 🌟 During an evening with family, friends, and staff, Roseville Area High School celebrated its Dual Language Spanish Immersion seniors at their Capstone Celebration. For their Capstone project, this year’s class spent their final trimester giving back—volunteering at Little Canada Elementary and putting their DLSI skills to work. "The evening is all about showcasing the students and all of their accomplishments over the past 13 years," said Maria Cristina Delgado, the Dual Language Spanish Immersion coordinator for Roseville Area Middle School and Roseville Area High School. Congratulations, DLSI seniors, and thank you for your service to our school community! (Photo credit: A. Barze)   Students Advocate, Connect at Day at the Capitol Students, board members, and administrators from Roseville Area Schools spent Monday at the State Capitol participating in the Association of Metropolitan School Districts Day at the Capitol—an opportunity to engage directly with lawmakers and advocate for issues impacting schools. Throughout the day, students met face-to-face with elected officials, attended sessions, and shared their perspectives on education. These conversations are a key part of the annual event, which brings together education leaders and students to ensure their voices are heard in legislative decision-making. For Summer Balfanz, a junior at Roseville Area High School, the experience was both energizing and meaningful and gave students the opportunity to feel heard, especially during challenging moments in the community. “The acknowledgements of what we the students dealt with during ICE raids and how well the teachers responded made me feel seen and heard,” Balfanz shared. “I did see so many people contributing to our community, and knowing our lawmakers also saw and noted it was very satisfying.” Looking ahead, Balfanz said, “I hope lawmakers continue to give teenagers more opportunities to participate in dialogue about their experiences in our state."   Celebrating Year-End Moments This is the time of the year when things start to feel full in the best way. Concerts, theater, end-of-year moments, and senior celebrations at Roseville Area High School and Fairview Alternative High School—they come quickly, one after another. And honestly, it’s just fun to be there for it. To sit in the audience, to clap, to watch our students step into who they’re becoming and really shine. On Friday, I had the chance to attend the Dual-Language Spanish Immersion Capstone Celebration at Roseville Area High School. It’s a special evening that honors seniors who’ve spent years in the DLSI program, in many cases starting in elementary school and staying with it all the way through. Their capstone projects reflected a trimester of service at Little Canada Elementary, and you could see the pride in that work. It wasn’t just about completing a requirement. It felt truly personal. Thank you to Lourdes Flores-Hanson and Maria Cristina Delgado for the care they put into that celebration. Then on Saturday, I was at the American Indian Education Powwow at Champlin Park High School. This event is a collaborative effort across Twin Cities school districts, with contributions from our very own Gabriella Carroll and Savannah Rojas Reyes. There was dancing, drumming, vendors, food—it was vibrant and welcoming, the kind of event you feel lucky to be part of. Another real point of pride for our community. And this is just the beginning! I am so proud of our students and staff and so honored to have the opportunity to cheer on their hard work and collaboration. Dr. Jenny Loeck Superintendent   RAHS junior Victoria Lin is headed to the National Speech & Debate Tournament in Richmond, VA in June, with sophomore Ella Das as alternate! Both had incredible qualifying performances—each losing just one round. Congrats, Victoria and Ella!    Reading Buddies: Building Confidence & Inspiring Leadership At Little Canada Elementary, something special is happening between our youngest learners and our student leaders! Our 1st grade and 6th grade students have teamed up as Reading Buddies, and the results have been heartwarming for everyone involved. During these buddy sessions, our sixth graders step into powerful leadership roles—modeling fluent reading, offering encouragement, and helping our beginning readers build confidence and skills one page at a time. But the impact doesn’t stop when the books close. First graders light up when they see their sixth-grade buddies in the hallways, at recess, and even on the bus, greeting them with huge smiles and waves. These connections are building a sense of belonging and community that stretches throughout the entire building. Through shared stories and shared smiles, our students are not only strengthening their reading skills—they’re strengthening our school community. Reading Buddies is a wonderful example of how leadership, mentorship, and learning come together at Little Canada Elementary! – Contributed by Whitney Berke and Alison Coe   ✨ Celebrating Young Poets ✨ Last week, 1st graders at Parkview Center School hosted a cozy Poetry Café for kindergartners—sharing their own poetry books over snacks and smiles. 📖 Reflections from our young authors: 💬 “Writing felt stressful, but reading was fun!” 💬 “It felt important—I liked having their attention.” Advice for future poets: 💡 “As long as they listen to the teachers, they’ll know what to do.” We’re so proud of our 1st graders for sharing their voices with courage and heart—and grateful to our 1st grade team for creating this special experience! 🐾 – Contributed by Carolyn Weatherhead and Jessica Talsky   Exploring & Learning at Osprey Wilds Brimhall Elementary's 6th graders had an unforgettable overnight adventure at Osprey Wilds! Students explored the outdoors through hands-on learning and teamwork. In Beaverology, they hiked to a real beaver dam and even engineered their own mini dams. During Predator–Prey, students learned about life cycles and survival in the forest ecosystem. On the Ojibwe hike, they discovered different trees, collected maple sap for syrup, and tasted pine tea and fresh maple syrup. Students also challenged themselves on the high ropes course, stepping outside their comfort zones and trying something new and a little scary! In Survival, they practiced important outdoor skills by building shelters and learning how to start fires. The day ended with a campfire where students learned fire safety, shared stories, and enjoyed a classic outdoor treat—s’mores! It was a wonderful trip filled with learning, adventure, and memories in the great outdoors. 🌿🔥 – Contributed by Laurel Carey, Nicole Hudella, Natalie Ramirez, Anna Zbacnik   Join Us for the First-Ever Black Girl Magic Ball! News for April 1, 2026 District Celebrates Black Girl Magic! 💜 🖤 Schools across the district came together to plan meaningful events throughout Black Girl Magic Week, all leading up to the celebration of Black Girl Magic Day. Founded by Alisha Barze and her daughters, this inspiring tradition continues to grow each year and creates opportunities to uplift Black girls and the entire community.   Building Schoolwide Connection at Brimhall Elementary At Brimhall Elementary, kindergarteners and their 6th grade buddies come together to read and build meaningful connections. Younger students are so proud to work with the older students while the older students see themselves as role models for their young friends!   An Overwhelming Sense of Pride and Gratitude As I reflect on what it means to work in Roseville Area Schools, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude. It is truly special to serve in a district that offers the richness and opportunity of a large metropolitan area, while still holding onto the close-knit feel of small elementary schools and both a comprehensive high school with a strong liberal arts foundation, as well as an excellent alternative high school option. Here, our staff truly know their students and they make meaningful efforts to build authentic connections with families. Through intentional events and daily, supportive interactions, our educators encourage students to explore a wide range of interests – from academics and the trades to athletics, arts, and beyond. One of the things that makes Roseville Area Schools so special is the consistent, unwavering support of our community. We see it in the ways our senior residences create opportunities to connect with students, and in the partnerships between faith-based organizations and nonprofit organizations that work to meet essential needs like food, tutoring, and housing stability. We see this support in the community’s consistent support of referendum efforts that ensure our schools have the resources necessary to provide safe, innovative, and well-maintained learning environments. It is reflected in the care taken to provide nutritious, locally sourced meals and in the dedication of our buildings and grounds teams who keep our spaces safe and welcoming. And beyond our district borders, I am proud to be a Minnesotan, where looking out for one another is part of who we are, and where our diverse students and families enrich our schools in countless ways. Thank you to all of you – our staff, our families, and our community members. Together, you ensure Roseville Area Schools remain a place where excellence, innovation, and equity are upfront and present every day. In Partnership, Dr. Jenny Loeck Superintendent   RAMS Student Submits Winning Powwow Design Roseville Area Middle School 8th grade student Lily Cross submitted a design for the American Indian Education Powwow—and her work was selected as the winning design! According to Lily, "This design includes the outline of Minnesota, as well as the state flag, bird, and flower to represent the modern land we live in today. It also includes a medicine wheel, the four sacred medicines, and the seven grandfather teachings, representing what our ancestors and we live by, pass on, and teach."     Three RAHS Students Qualify for State Speech Tournament We’re so proud to celebrate our talented speakers from Roseville Area High School! The RAHS Speech Team competed at the 4AA Section Speech Tournament on March 26, and we’re excited to share that the following students have qualified for the 2026 Minnesota State Speech Tournament, taking place April 24 at Park Center High School (left to right): Sundus Abdullahi (Grade 12): 3rd place in Informative (coached by Megan Soosai) Logan Dam (Grade 12) & Carrie Thomas (Grade 12): Section 4AA Duo Champions (coached by Bret Hemmerlin) Congratulations to these outstanding students and best of luck at state!   Students Build Valuable Skills Through Mock Trial Experience What happens when students step into the roles of attorneys and witnesses to argue a high-stakes case? Through Maslon LLP’s UPLIFT (Legal Institute for Teens) mock trial program, which has been offered at Roseville Area Middle School since 2022, students build valuable skills through hands-on legal experiences. The RAMS teams are pictured above. In the program, students analyze real-world-style criminal or civil cases, develop arguments, and present them in a mock courtroom. This year, students examined a case involving a movie director’s responsibility in an on-set death, learning about legal standards, evidence, and levels of culpability. Working in teams as attorneys and witnesses, they prepared arguments with guidance from legal professionals and presented their cases before a judge at the University of St. Thomas Law School. Beyond content knowledge, students gain confidence, public speaking experience, and insight into the legal system. The program also creates a pathway to high school participation. Former RAMS students helped launch a team at RAHS (pictured below), where students now compete in the Minnesota State Bar Association High School Mock Trial Competition. Together, these experiences give students a strong foundation in analysis, advocacy, and real-world application of their learning.   Sixth Graders Turn an Idea into a Schoolwide Dance Club What started as a simple idea grew into something special at Emmet D. Williams Elementary School. Seven sixth grade students created and led a Dance Club, bringing together 48 K–6 students to learn a choreographed routine to the song “Golden.” With support from EDW teachers David Miller and Logan Brown, the students organized practices, taught the dance, and planned the performance. After five weeks of hard work, the group performed for about 100 audience members. (📹 Click the video above to watch their routine!) "They have done an outstanding job teaching, building connections, and helping younger students discover a love and enjoyment for dance,” exclaimed Miller.   RAHS Drama Presents "The 12 Huntsmen" The Brothers Grimm tromp through the forest in search of fairy tales and stumble into a story: the princess “Cesario” and a band of 11 women have disguised themselves as Huntsmen. Over the night, the women tell stories inspired by food. Some are dark, some comic, some strange, some new, and some familiar. Every Huntsman has a story, but the order is random each night!  🗓️ April 9, 10, 11 at 7 p.m. and April 12 at 2 p.m. 📍 The Nielsen Theater at Roseville Area High School 🎟️ Tickets are $5-$10 (FREE for RAHS students!) 🔗 Click to purchase tickets   🎉 You’re Invited to the Roseville Area Schools One World Event! 🌍 Join us for an evening full of culture and community! Spring is a time of growth, and even when it doesn’t always show outside, we are seeing growth and learning happening every day thanks to the care and support of our families. We have so much to look forward to and celebrate together. At the March 31 school board meeting, we will honor the accomplishments of our winter student-athletes. A photo booth for students and staff to take pictures commemorating Black Girl Magic Day. Certificates to students who show leadership and help plan Black Girl Magic Day for their school/program. Roseville parent and Black Girl Magic Roseville founder Alisha Barze said it best when she stated that Black Girl Magic is, "A day we recognize the accomplishments and leadership of Black girls and women. It is important to recognize this demographic because they are often overlooked and underrepresented. We do this to inspire young girls to go after their dreams and become leaders. Let's help uplift our community."   Central Park Celebrates Reading with “Read Around the Park” Students at Central Park Elementary enjoyed a special Read Around the Park event as part of I Love to Read Month. Guest readers from across the district visited classrooms to share three meaningful books selected by the Student Council: The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig, Lost and Found Cat by Doug Kuntz and Amy Shrodes, and All Are Welcome Here by Alexandra Penfold. Each story was paired with hands-on activities that helped students reflect on the books' themes. The event created a joyful celebration of reading—making it a wonderful highlight of I Love to Read Month.   RAHS Seniors Explore Civic Engagement with League of Women Voters Roseville Area High School American Government teachers Amy Westland and Matt Rode recently welcomed representatives from the League of Women Voters to speak with students in grade 12 about civic engagement and the importance of participation in local democracy. During the presentation, students learned about the structure and impact of local government offices, how decisions at the local level shape their daily lives, and why informed participation in elections matters. The presenters also walked students through the voter registration process and discussed the power young voters have in shaping their communities. "Experiences like this help connect what students learn in class to real civic action," explained Westland, "and empower them to see themselves as active participants in our democracy."   Pokémon Kids Trade Night! ⚡️ 🔄 Join us for an evening of Pokémon fun where kids will learn the basics of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, practice gameplay with friends, and create a Pokémon-themed craft to take home! 🗓️ Friday, April 10 ⏰ 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. | 🎟️ $25 📍 Aŋpétu Téča Education Center Kids are encouraged to bring their own Pokémon cards!
