Shopping and Travel Safety Safety Tips Holiday Shopping Safety Tips Extra precautions need to be taken when  shopping during the holiday season . Here are a few things to keep in mind. Be careful when backing out of parking spaces. It's a good idea to have someone act as a lookout for you, especially if you're parked next to an SUV or van. And be sure to watch for other vehicles in the parking lot that might be suddenly backing out of spaces. Remember to keep a watch on your children and be on the lookout for small children running behind your car as you leave your space. Always park in well-lit areas. Don't leave purchased gifts in plain view — lock them in your trunk. If you drop the holiday gifts that you’ve purchased in your vehicle and don’t plan on leaving just yet, it might be a good idea to move your car. Onlookers will think that you have left the mall, and your vehicle could be less of a target. Be sure to keep receipts in your wallet or purse. Leaving the receipt in the bag makes it difficult for you to prove your purchase and easy for thieves to return the items for cash. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Only bring credit cards you plan to use. Check your bank statements regularly during the season to spot suspicious activity. Holiday travel safety tips Avoid  aggressive and angry driving . Adjust following distance and speed in snowy or icy conditions. A little eggnog might be delicious during the holidays. So be sure to designate a  sober driver  or arrange for a  rideshare service like Uber or Lyft  ahead of time if you plan to drink at holiday gatherings. During the winter months, an earlier sunset means you've got less daylight to work with. Ideally, plan your trip to avoid driving at night. Cold weather takes its toll on car batteries. Double-check to make sure you've got jumper cables in your trunk. You never know when an easy jump-start could save you time and hassle — or when you could use them to help someone else. A winter storm can leave you spending your holiday stuck in a drift or stranded in a blizzard, particularly if you're traveling on unfamiliar roads. So be sure to stock your vehicle with items that might be helpful in case of a problem: thick blankets, extra food and water, coats and jackets, and a flashlight. • School Start Times Follow-Up

Dear Ladue Schools Community,  During the Nov. 21 and Dec. 12 Board of Education meetings, Dr. Amy Zielinski, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Geoff Macy, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance, shared the  feedback  from students, staff, and family/community engagement. Following a lengthy discussion this past Monday, our Board of Education members voted that school start/end times  will remain as is through the 2023-24 school year .   The Board of Education indicated they would revisit the new start time discussion in the future. They also asked school administrators to research the feasibility of running a two-tiered bus system, which would allow both secondary schools (high school and middle school) to have a later start time.    Thank you to our students, staff, and families for participating in our community feedback sessions and survey. Sincerely, Kimberly G. McKenzie, M.A. Director of Communications cc: Dr. Jim Wipke, Superintendent       Dr. Amy Zielinski, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction       Dr. Geoff Macy, Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance

The rolling seven-day average is currently  213 new cases per day.  St. Louis County is in the CDC’s high category for COVID transmission levels. The South County area of our region has had the highest number of cases per 100,000 people with 376 cases in the past seven days. While nearly all areas of our region have seen an increase in COVID cases, the Central and Outer North areas have had the highest percent change in the past week. To view additional COVID data, visit our  COVID dashboard .   Given this recent trend, as well as the rapid increase of flu cases in our region, DPH continues to strongly recommend that residents use the tools available to slow the spread of respiratory viruses: get up to date on  vaccines , including boosters and flu shots; wear masks in crowded public indoor places; wash hands regularly, and isolate and  get tested  if you experience any symptoms of COVID-19. If you feel sick, please stay home and get tested. If you use an at-home test, you can report a positive result online  here .    COVID-19 vaccinations are offered on weekdays at the John C. Murphy Health Center in Berkeley, the South County Health Center in Sunset Hills, and the North Central Community Health Center in Jennings from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flu shots are also available at the three health centers from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. No appointments are necessary.  Free testing for  COVID-19, flu, and RSV is availabl e  at John C. Murphy Health Center on Tuesdays and South County Health Center on Thursdays. Testing is also available with your primary care provider or with at - home tests.
