    The Lyon Loop November 2026 Message from the Superintendent Dear Families, Staff, and Community Members, As we step into November, the cooler weather and changing season bring a natural opportunity to pause, reflect, and express gratitude for our school community. Walking through our schools recently, I have been inspired by the engaging work taking place in our classrooms. A wonderful example is how our teachers and students are incorporating Career Trees into daily learning. Seeing the hallways lined with leaves representing students’ aspirations, interests, and potential pathways is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Our mission is to prepare every student for college, career, and life success, and our dedicated educators work tirelessly every single day to bring that mission to life. We also have much to celebrate across our athletic programs. A huge congratulations to all of our student-athletes and teams competing in regional and state tournaments! Reaching this level of competition is a testament to your hard work, grit, and dedication. As you represent our district on the field and court, please continue to prioritize exceptional sportsmanship and character—win or lose, you make us proud. As you look ahead at the month, please keep these important dates in mind: Veterans Day (Observed November 11th): We pause to honor and thank the courageous men and women who have served our country. Thanksgiving Break (November 23–27): Schools will be closed for the week to allow our students, staff, and families time to recharge. Classes will resume on Monday, November 30. I hope the upcoming break offers each of you a meaningful chance to slow down and enjoy quality time with family, friends, and loved ones.   • LCSD Limelight: Yerington Elementary’s Bike & Scoote...

    LCSD Limelight: Yerington Elementary’s Bike & Scooter Safety Demonstration Student safety and well-being are top priorities across the Lyon County School District, and last week Yerington Elementary School put those values into action! YES students gathered for an interactive, high-energy assembly dedicated to safe riding habits for bicycles and scooters. Led by Principal Fortier alongside School Resource Officer, Deputy Holland, the presentation brought essential street-smart rules directly to students in a fun, memorable, and impactful way. The highlight of the assembly was a hands-on melon drop demonstration that quickly showed students what happens to an unprotected head during an accident. By dropping one melon wearing a properly fitted helmet and another without any protection, Deputy Holland and Principal Fortier illustrated the consequences of an impact—proving that serious damage can happen at speeds as low as 17 miles per hour! The visual lesson captivated the room, driving home the reality that protective gear is not optional when wheels are spinning. Whether students are commuting to and from school or riding around the neighborhood on weekends, staying vigilant and aware of surroundings is essential. Families are encouraged to reinforce these key safety habits at home before kids head out the door: Always wear a properly fitted helmet every single time you ride. Wear closed-toe shoes with laces tied securely to protect feet and maintain pedal grip. Stop and look both ways (left, right, and left again) before entering a street or crossing an intersection. Use designated crosswalks and sidewalks whenever possible, walking your bike or scooter across busy streets. Stay alert and distraction-free —keep eyes up, listen for vehicle traffic, and never wear headphones while riding. Be visible by wearing bright clothing and ensuring bikes and scooters have working reflectors or lights.   • LCSD Limelight: FHS competed at the National FFA Liv...

    LCSD Limelight: FHS  competed at the National FFA Livestock Evaluation Contest! Last week, the Fernley High School FFA Livestock Evaluation Team traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, to compete on the national stage at the prestigious National FFA Livestock Evaluation Contest. Reaching this elite level is no small feat—teams must first claim 1st place in their state contest to qualify. Having proven themselves as the best in Nevada, the dedicated team of four earned the rare honor of representing FHS and the state of Nevada against the top agricultural minds in the nation. The team— Dylan Viehland, Aisley Blackorby, Jayde Thomas, and Arianna Walker —went head-to-head against 46 state-champion teams and 182 individual competitors from coast to coast. Contest awards at this elite level are designated as Gold, Silver, or Bronze, reflecting rigorous evaluations in livestock market value, breeding traits, and industry knowledge. Our students demonstrated exceptional composure, sharp critical thinking, and months of hard work and preparation. When the final tally was announced, Fernley placed 33rd, proudly earning a Bronze medal and finishing just a single placing away from Silver! Individually, our students had an incredible showing against the nation's best, with Arianna Walker earning Silver (59th overall), Ainsley Blackorby earning Silver (83rd overall), Dylan Viehland earning Silver (105th overall), and Jayde Thomas earning Bronze (168th overall).  Please join us in congratulating Arianna, Ainsley, Dylan, and Jayde for representing Fernley High School, the Lyon County School District, and Nevada FFA with such grit, excellence, and pride!

    LCSD Limelight: SSHS Career Fair! The Silver Stage High School Career Fair took place last week, offering students an exciting opportunity to explore the wide array of paths available to them after graduation. From local businesses and trade professionals to healthcare organizations and higher education representatives, community members generously volunteered their time to meet face-to-face with SSHS students. During the event, students engaged in hands-on demonstrations, discussed career options, and gained firsthand insight into entry-level roles, internships, and essential workforce skills. Events like these highlight Lyon County School District's core commitment to preparing every student for a successful future, whether they choose to enter the workforce directly, pursue trade training, or attend college. LCSD extends a sincere thank-you to all of the dedicated community partners, local businesses, and volunteers who made this Career Fair possible.     LCSD Limelight: Fernley Intermediate School’s Annual Outdoor Day The Lyon County School District is proud to shine a spotlight on Fernley Intermediate School’s annual Outdoor Day, an extraordinary event that brought hands-on learning, outdoor exploration, and career discovery directly to 6th graders. Outdoor Day gives students a unique opportunity to step beyond the classroom, dive into interactive activities, and connect with local professionals, conservationists, and community leaders. From honing outdoor skills to discovering future career paths in environmental science, emergency services, and agriculture, the day was packed with high-energy, memorable experiences. Hands-On Highlights & Participating Organizations Students rotated through dynamic, interactive stations led by an outstanding group of community partners: Nevada Department of Wildlife: Taught archery precision, casting techniques, and hosted an immersive hands-on skulls and hides wildlife exhibit. Nevada Bighorns Unlimited: Brought the crowd-favorite inflatable archery range. Nevada Audubon: Guided students through bird identification skills and local ecology. Safari Club International (SCI): Provided an engaging, hands-on experience with their mobile sensory trailer. Fallon Naval Air Station K-9 Unit: Demonstrated the incredible discipline, working roles, and training of military service dogs. Lyon County Search and Rescue: Showcased essential emergency response procedures, safety skills, and community rescue operations. Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT): Gave students an up-close look at heavy equipment and civil engineering careers. Tahoe Rim Trail Association: Educated students on trail stewardship, hiking, and outdoor recreation. Northern Nevada Gold Panners Association: Taught traditional gold panning techniques and local geological history. Yerington Bees: Offered an insightful look into apiculture, native pollinators, and agriculture. Johnni Archuleta & Mini Cows (Fallon, NV): Delighted students while sharing insights into livestock care and agricultural life. Supporting Student Success Beyond the Classroom Events like FIS Outdoor Day exemplify Lyon County School District’s commitment to providing well-rounded, experiential learning! By connecting academic concepts with real-world applications, students gain a deeper appreciation for nature, local community services, and the vast array of outdoor hobbies and careers open to them in Northern Nevada. A heartfelt  thank you goes out to the dedicated Fernley Intermediate School staff, administrators, and volunteers who organized this incredible day, as well as every participating organization for donating their time, energy, and expertise to inspire our students!

  • October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

    October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month Did you know that nearly 90% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests do not survive? Every second matters when someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest. 🫀 Immediate CPR can double—or even triple—a person’s chance of survival. ⚡Early access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can also significantly improve the chance of survival. That’s why we’ve made AED access a priority in our schools. We have significantly increased the number of AEDs available throughout our school buildings, and every school now has a minimum of two AEDs , strategically placed for quick and easy access in the event of an emergency.    Our goal is simple: When every second counts, we want our staff and students to have the tools they need to respond.  Seconds save lives. ❤ Know CPR. ⚡ Know where the AED is. 🫀 Be ready to act.

    Dear Fernley Community, Fernley High School’s SkillsUSA students and advisors invite you and your family to our  1st Annual Trunk or Treat ! Event   Details: Date & Time:  Wednesday, October 28, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM Location:  Fernley High School Admission:  Free for trick-or-treaters of all ages! It promises to be a fantastic evening of costumes, candy, and community spirit. Get Involved: Enter a Trunk ($10):  Local businesses, clubs, families, and staff are invited to decorate a vehicle trunk and hand out treats. Prizes will be awarded for top trunks! Please register in the FHS main office by  Monday, October 26 . Vendors & Food Trucks ($50):  Showcase your business or food truck to the local community. Limited spots remain! All funds raised go directly toward student travel, uniforms, and equipment for upcoming SkillsUSA competitions and conferences.   • LCSD Limelight: Lyon County School District Leads Re...

    LCSD Limelight: Lyon County School District Leads Regional Effort to  Build Work-Ready Students! Lyon County School District (LCSD) is spearheading a dynamic regional partnership to bridge the gap between education and career success. Joining forces with Carson City School District, Churchill County School District, Douglas County School District, Storey County School District, and Western Nevada College (WNC), LCSD is proud to launch the Northwest Regional Work Ready Community Task Force. This collaborative initiative brings together K–12 leaders, higher education institutions, local governments, and economic development partners to create a strong, seamless talent pipeline for Northern Nevada’s growing economy. What Does This Mean for Our Students? Nationally Recognized Credentials:  Central to this initiative is educating regional employers on the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). This portable credential measures real-world workplace skills in Applied Math, Workplace Documents, and Graphic Literacy—giving students concrete proof of their capabilities as they transition to the workforce or college. Connected Career Pathways:  Because students frequently study in one county and work in another, this regional alignment links high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs directly to WNC training and local industry demands. Measurable Regional Progress:  Lyon County is already  61% of the way  toward achieving its official Work Ready Community certification goals, and this regional task force will help push the community across the finish line! Student Leadership in Action The task force isn't just planning for students—it's actively engaging them. At the monthly meeting hosted at the Northern Nevada Building Trades Union Office in Reno, over 25 business and community leaders gathered to collaborate. Highlighted during the session were four students from Fernley High School, Chase Christopher, Evelyn James, Claire Lewis, and Kimberlee Ruhnau who were selected to design and build the group’s official website. The students pitched their design concepts, presented mockups, and gathered direct feedback from industry professionals. They are using those insights to build a single landing page to educate regional stakeholders, connect candidates, and showcase the benefits of a work-ready workforce. National Bullying Prevention Month October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a key moment to reaffirm our commitment to fostering safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments for every student. We believe that learning thrives where kindness, respect, and empathy are actively practiced. Throughout this month, our schools will feature activities and lessons focused on building positive relationships, standing up against bullying, and encouraging kindness.
