  • DCSC Calendar Changes for Winter 2021

Dear DCSC Parents and Guardians, This has certainly been a challenging and unprecedented fall semester for us all. While we do not know what the spring semester will have in store for us, we have learned many important lessons this semester. One of those lessons is the importance of giving our students and staff built in breaks. Many of our policies and protocols have changed, and every single staff member is doing extra work to keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible. These extra efforts can be taxing and making sure we take care of our students and staff is incredibly important. To ensure that we have built-in days this winter to provide a break in the normal schedule, we are planning for the following adjustments to the previously released 2020-2021 schedule: January 18th  - Martin Luther King Jr. Day, no school (as previously scheduled) January 29th  - eLearning BASIC Day February 12th  - No school (using our performance based accreditation banked time off) February 15th  - Presidents' Day, no school (previously scheduled as a snow make-up day) February 26th  - eLearning BASIC Day March 12th  - eLearning BASIC Day On the eLearning BASIC Days noted above, the Little Warrior Learning Center Preschool and our PACE program will remain open for the entire day. Meals will be distributed on these days in a grab-and-go, drive-thru style. As a reminder, eLearning BASIC Days will provide our in-person students with virtual instruction like we have had on scheduled eLearning Days in the past. Teachers will have set office hours and assignments will be posted in Schoology for students to complete. On an eLearning BASIC Day, there should be a limited amount of student to teacher virtual engagement. Reminders and information about meal distribution will be sent before each of these scheduled dates. On the closure days noted above (Jan. 18, Feb. 12, and Feb. 15), the Little Warrior Learning Center Preschool and our PACE program will also be closed. No meals will be distributed on these days. Reminders will be sent before each of these scheduled dates. At this time, we plan to keep the rest of the spring 2021 calendar the same. Families will be notified of any additional alterations. In the event of inclement weather (i.e. snow, ice, low temperatures) that leads to an in-person school closure, we currently plan to utilize an eLearning Day on that day instead of adding additional days on to the end of the year in June. Any weather-related cancellations or delays will be sent to families as an emergency alert through the ParentSquare system. Please make sure your contact information is always up to date so you will receive urgent communications. Thank you for your support as we continue to navigate an uncertain winter! If you have any questions, please call your child's school office or the Administration Office at 317-745-2212. Sincerely, DCSC Administration

Northbound traffic no longer has to yield to southbound traffic turning left or westbound traffic coming off the angled road.   See the photo below that faces north towards U.S. 36: Please use caution when proceeding through the intersection.   Sincerely, DCSC Administration

  • DCSC eLearning Day Reminder 11.18.20

Dear DCSC Parents and Guardians, As a reminder, we will be  having an eLearning Day for all DCSC students this Wednesday, November 18, 2020. No students will report for in-person learning this day.  Classes are scheduled to resume as normal and in-person on Thursday, November 19. Of the many changes brought about by COVID-19, our teachers are utilizing technology more than ever before.   This eLearning Day will be used to provide our teachers with much-needed technology training. With grant money, we have secured cameras for our teachers to provide quality virtual education. This eLearning Day is vital in training our team with these new devices, as well as additional technology changes. Teachers will provide lessons in Schoology just as we did on our eLearning practice days last year and when we were closed in the spring. On eLearning Days, assignments should be posted by 9 a.m. in Schoology. Students should plan on completing all work at home during the eLearning Day which will count as their attendance measure. If a student is unable to complete work at home, they will be given up to five school days to complete their assignments. Please contact your child’s teacher during their office hours from 9 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. if you have any questions. Please note that outside of these office hours, teachers may be away from their computers and will respond to questions as soon as they are able. • DCSC weather delays and cancellations: how do we dec...

Dear DCSC Parents and Guardians,  It may be hard to believe, but we are entering that time of year when weather can be unpredictable! Making the decision to delay or cancel school due to weather conditions is not something we take lightly at Danville Community Schools. It not only impacts the schedules of our staff, parents and guardians, it involves our number one priority: student safety. Weather delays and cancellations can be attributed to fog, ice, snow and even temperature. During the colder months when we are most affected by low temperatures, ice and snow, our Superintendent Dr. Tracey Shafer and our Director of Transportation Mrs. Dana Parsons are up around 4 a.m. to personally drive district roads and check our school buses in the transportation lot. After consulting with Mrs. Parsons on the conditions of our fleet, Dr. Shafer also confers with our Director of Maintenance Mr. Richard Land on the conditions of school parking lots and sidewalks. Our maintenance department does the early morning treatment of our lots to provide safe travel and walkways for the start of school. Additionally, Dr. Shafer will discuss the situation with neighboring school corporation superintendents before making a decision. If fog, ice or snow are impacting travel conditions even in our most rural areas of the school district, we may decide to delay so fog may lift, ice may be salted or snow may be plowed. If we think these conditions won’t improve in two hours, we may decide to cancel school or use an eLearning Day for all students. Since we don’t have indoor storage for our school bus fleet, ice and temperature can have an impact on our buses. Sometimes the temperatures are so low, it causes mechanical issues and we have trouble getting our buses to start. Sometimes the doors are frozen shut or the temperature inside the bus isn’t safe for our students or staff. When temperatures reach -5F, we start to see mechanical issues with our buses. Around -10F, temperatures can prevent our school buses from functioning. We also take into consideration the amount of time our students will be standing outside waiting on the bus. We pay close attention to the wind chill and consult a chart provided by the National Weather Service. The chart notes the wind speed and temperature along with exposure times for frostbite. When students are at risk of frostbite for a 20 to 30 minute exposure, we consider delays or cancellation. Delays, however, are only two hours long and temperature may not change drastically in such a short amount of time. In these instances, a cancellation may be more appropriate. We always encourage parents and guardians to make sure their children are properly clothed while waiting for the bus with coats, hats and gloves. We try to make a decision on school delays or cancellations by 5:30 a.m. Once Dr. Shafer makes the decision, our Communications Coordinator Mrs. Ashton Brellenthin begins getting the message out. She first shares it via text, email and/or app notification through ParentSquare to staff, parents and guardians with an emergency message. (Keeping your contact information up to date will ensure that you receive these alerts first. Please call or message your child's school to update your contact information.) Next, Mrs. Brellenthin will update the school website and the DCSC Facebook and Twitter accounts. Finally, she contacts local media stations to list our delay or closure on their broadcast and website. For days when cancelling in-person education is necessary, we will likely utilize an eLearning Day so our students don’t have to add days on to the end of the year. Parents and guardians will receive this information in the cancellation notification should the decision be made to utilize eLearning. On eLearning Days, assignments should be posted by 9 a.m. in Schoology. As a reminder, students will have five school days to complete eLearning Day assignments. Please contact your child’s teacher during their office hours of 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on eLearning Days if you have any questions. Other special considerations for delays and cancellations are in our Little Warrior Learning Center Preschool and our PACE before and after school care program. These two programs are ONLY closed when a county or state emergency has been issued and roads are closed to everyone except emergency personnel. Even if North Elementary, South Elementary, Danville Community Middle School and Danville Community High School are all delayed or closed, Little Warrior Learning Center Preschool and PACE will open at the normally scheduled time UNLESS there is a county or state emergency issued. The a.m. developmental preschool at North Elementary, however, is a program separate from the Little Warrior Learning Center Preschool and DOES NOT open during a delay or cancellation. School delays and cancellations are never convenient for anyone, but the safety of our students always comes first. We also understand, especially in some of the more rural parts of our district, that road conditions on personal property might vary. As a parent or guardian, you ultimately have the final decision on sending your child to school if we do not delay or cancel in these situations. If you have any questions about school delays or closures, please contact the Administration Office at 317-745-2212. Sincerely, DCSC Administration
