Dr. Sanders spent the morning visiting the Kindergarten Center and Hadley Junior High, giving him an opportunity to experience our schools and spend time with our students and staff. We began with some of our youngest learners at the Kindergarten Center before heading to Hadley to see our middle schoolers in action. Throughout the visit, I was incredibly proud to showcase the learning, engagement, and sense of community that make D41 such a special place. I am thankful that Dr. Sanders chose to spend time in D41. It is a sign of greatness when others want to visit our schools, learn from our staff, and see our students in action. Each year, the Student Handbook is updated and provides basic information on important matters such as curriculum, discipline, student health, parent-teacher conferences, and more. Help your child have a successful school year by becoming familiar with the information in this handbook and discussing it with your child as appropriate. This handbook is based on Board Policy with relevant policy sections noted in parentheses. Parents are encouraged to review Board Policy, which is provided in a searchable format. The Board of Education reviews and amends its policy regularly; if the policy differs from information in this handbook, Board Policy takes precedence. Community engagement is an important part of this process. We want to hear what is working well, where opportunities exist, and what should be most important as we look to the future. The district has partnered with HYA consultants to lead a comprehensive planning process designed to identify a shared vision and priorities for District 41. Over the coming weeks, HYA will facilitate focus groups with teachers and staff, district and school administrators, parents, community members, and students. In addition, surveys will provide another opportunity for participants to share their perspectives. Did you know you can message teachers and staff directly in ParentSquare? ParentSquare makes it easy to have private conversations with teachers, staff members, or small groups all in one place. When starting a message, you can choose between two options: Direct Message: Sends your message privately to each person you select. If you include multiple recipients, each person receives a separate conversation and cannot see who else received the message. Think of it like BCC in email. This is a great option for individual or confidential communication. Group Conversation: Creates one shared conversation with everyone you select. All participants can see the messages and reply to the group. Think of it like CC in email. This works well when everyone needs to be part of the same conversation. Note: We’venabled Family Sharing! You can now add another parent or guardian to Direct Messages with your child’s teacher(s) so both of you can easily stay connected in group conversations. First Stop Preschool Ribbon Cutting The community gathered to celebrate the naming of the D41 First Stop Preschool and mascot Piper the Prairie Dog train conductor with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, August 20. A special thank you to the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce for helping us host the event. Hadley Wildcats are Leading the Way Hadley Junior High students are helping set the tone for a positive and successful school year! During advisory, students worked together to identify the expectations they want to commit to as a group. Each advisory then selected student ambassadors to represent their classmates and bring their ideas to a larger student leadership discussion. The ambassadors came together in teams to review the expectations shared across advisories and identify those they believe will help create a positive, respectful, and successful school community. Thank you to our Wildcat student leaders for representing their classmates and helping shape a great year at Hadley! Calls can still be made and received, but you may experience poor audio quality or interruptions during a call. A Message from the Board President
A Message from the Board President Dr. Robert Bruno August 21, 2026 On behalf of the School Board, welcome to another D41 school year. We have had many. But which one is this one? Spoiler alert. It’s a lot. First, a bit of U.S. history. In the late-19th Century, 7 million children in America were being formally educated; many of them in small, wooden framed one-room schoolhouses. These rural and urban schools were the foundation for what would become America’s expansive public education system. By the early 20th Century, states had passed laws requiring children to attend school and the country’s most important pillar to industrial development, prosperity and democracy had been established. Our area had its own log cabin school in 1836. That brings us to today. This new school year Glen Ellyn District 41 will provide a comprehensive public education to approximately 3,500 children living within the five communities we serve. But when was D41 established? “Anyone, anyone?” (special credit to anyone who knows the iconic school movie reference and emails me the answer; no using AI). Turns out D41 was formally created by a Board of Education vote in 1902. Now, if you do the math, that means that this year is the 124th year of schooling in D41. Which means, that next year will be our 125th anniversary. Yes, there will be celebrations. I hope they will include music and singing. Poetry and fine arts are also always welcome. Whether or not you are a proud parent/guardian of a current or matriculated D41 student, thank you for partnering with us. Together we are the inheritors of a remarkable legacy of achievement. Remembering the past ensures that we will always endeavor to advance the kind of quality district schools that fashion our children’s future. Our schools are now open and every child, from pre-K to 8th grade, belongs here. Possibilities abound. Let me allow the philosophical powerhouse duo of Piglet and Winnie the Pooh to have the last word on how they feel about going to school each day. “When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet, “what's the first thing you say to yourself?” “What's for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?” “I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet. Pooh nodded thoughtfully. “It's the same thing,” he said. Cast members from the show performed “Under the Sea” from the summer show. This was their 5th summer production and the largest fundraiser for the foundation. Presentations | watch A legislative update was presented by Jennifer Smith from Franczek P.C. She provided an overview of changes to laws including administratively withdrawing students, student cell phone use, cyberbullying related to AI images, hairstyle discrimination related to religion, k-2 suspension and expulsion, as well as AI use in teacher evaluations. She also presented a few cases that are currently active across the nation. Public Participation | watch Superintendent’s Report | watch Dr. McHugh shared updates on topics including the strategic plan process, summer construction, instructional technology, special education classroom setup, increased enrollment for preschool and full-day kindergarten, as well as an overview of staff and student opening days. Board Reports | watch Discussion Board Member Conference Meeting Expense | watch Dr. Bruno shared an overview of the Federal Advocacy Conference that will be attended by Secretary Julie Hill in Washington D.C. 2026-2029 District 41 E-Learning Plan | watch Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning, and Accountability Dr. Kristin Williams presented information about the e-learning plan. She shared that every three years the district is required to resubmit the e-learning plan to the state. Based on community feedback, no major changes are proposed. Board members asked questions and provided insights. The Board consensus was to table the action item and bring it back in September. A motion was made to table the item. Preliminary Draft 2026-2027 Budget | watch Assistant Superintendent for Finance, Facilities and Operations Eric DePorter presented the tentative budget for review. He shared the process and timeline for creating a tentative budget and presented the current assumptions in the budget. He engaged the Board in conversation about the budget and plans for the future. District 41 Food Service Information
District 41 Food Service Information August 2026 District 41’s food service partner Quest requires preorders for all elementary school lunches. The preordering process allows Quest to better provide the accurate number of lunches to each school building. This process is required for all elementary students including families who have approved fee waivers. Hadley Junior High uses an a la carte service style where students can select their meals when they arrive in the cafeteria. They will not preorder meals. To ensure your students have funds, please load their PushCoin account. Preorders need to be completed by midnight the Thursday before the following week. Preordering will be through an app/website called MyMealOrder.com (MMO). In order to get started with MMO you must complete the following steps: Step 1: Go to mymealorder.com to login Click here Step 2: Click here for instructions on how to locate your student’s ID. You will need your child’s school ID number to set up myMealOrder. Step 3: Place your order by midnight on Thursday night for the following week. Bus App Information August 2026 First View Bus App Now Available The First Student's First View®, is a secure, easy-to-use app that keeps you connected to your student’s trip progress in real time. The app is free and available for download on the App Store or Google Play. What You Can Do with First View · See real-time vehicle location via GPS and track its progress · Easily access vehicle details and updates regarding any changes · Receive distance notification and automated arrival alerts when the vehicle is close · Set-up family members and caregivers to receive trip email alerts · Connect with a dedicated support team for your all app-related needs How to Get Started with First View 1. Download the free, easy-to-use mobile app, which is available on both iOS and Android devices. Search for app name First View or visit myfirstview.com and create an account. Not all devices are compatible and must meet the minimum operating system requirements. Make sure to allow notifications and enable location-based services for notification set-up. 2. Create your student’s profile by clicking on the + sign on the map. You’ll be asked to enter: · The 5-character district code: Z6S4N (REG) or F4G6X (SPED) · Your student’s ID and last name 3. You will be connected automatically to your student’s trip information. You can view the schedule under Students in the app menu or view today’s trips on the Map home screen. 4. Set-up distance notifications to be alerted in the app or push notification when the trip is live. Click on Set Notifications on the map or in Notification Settings to add up to 3 notification zones per trip. Customize the notification pinpoint, distance range, and time range for accurate and timely alerts as the vehicle is approaching your student’s stop. Want to get email alerts? Add yourself and up to 10 family members or caregivers as a notification recipient. To set this up in the app, click on the notification bell and select Manage Recipients. 5. Once you have finished setting up your profile, click on the map to begin tracking or view your student details, add another student profile, or view account information and settings in the menu.
