  • Fall 2026 PSAT Administration Communication_10/5/2026

Oxford High School October 5, 2026  Subject: PSAT Administration - October 21, 2026 Dear Parents and Guardians, Oxford High School will administer the digital PSAT to all students on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. All Juniors and Sophomores will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT and all Freshmen will be taking the PSAT 8/9 through College Board services. The test will start promptly at 7:20 a.m. and end around 10:30 a.m. with an 11:00 a.m. dismissal time. Students with extended College Board SSD accommodations will be dismissed around noon. Bus transportation will be available for both dismissal times. Students will take the PSAT on their fully-charged, school-issued Chromebook, and all testing will occur in students’ Advisory classrooms unless otherwise noted. If your child has pre-approved College Board SSD accommodations requiring an alternate testing location, they will receive a separate notification before test day with details specific to their testing location. The PSAT/NMSQT is an important preliminary test that provides many benefits that can help students along their paths to college. In addition, students receive free college planning tools to help them start their college search as well as feedback on the types of Advanced Placement courses for which they may be particularly well-prepared. Taking these college-level classes can help students earn college credit while still in high school and provide them with a competitive advantage in the college admissions process. For our juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT offers consideration for college scholarships, as well as personalized feedback on their performance before taking the SAT.   To best help your child prepare, we encourage you to review the resources linked below; these include testing directions, sample questions, and online tools. If you have any questions about the PSAT/NMSQT, you can contact your child’s school counselor. Also, please be aware that there is no make-up date for the PSAT/NMSQT. PSAT 8/9 Student Guide PSAT/NMSQT 10/11 Student Guide Practice Resources SAT Suite Benefits: For Students & Parents Parent Guide: Preparing Your Student for the SAT The School Counseling department guided students through a pre-registration digital readiness check during last week’s Advisory, and all students will ensure access again on Wednesday, October 14, during Advisory. Students must have a charged, school-issued Chromebook with them to complete this process. Finally,  seniors can use this day to support their post-high school planning, and school attendance will not be taken . Seniors can schedule a visit to a college or university campus, or attend a post high-school planning seminar. Additionally, seniors can use this day to explore opportunities related to their Capstone Project. If seniors would like support specific to the college application process or their Capstone project, they can report to the cafeteria to work with a school counselor or staff member between 8:00-11:00.  Thank you,  Heather O'Brien, Principal School Leadership Heather O'Brien Principal Stephanie Sorak Assistant Principal AJ Huston Athletic Director / Dean of Students Oxford High School 61 Quaker Farms Road, Oxford, CT 06478 • 203.888.2468 ohs.opsct.org

Research shows that extracurricular activities do far more than just fill a schedule—they help shape well-rounded, resilient young adults. Key Benefits of Getting Involved: Academic Boost: Participation in school-based activities, debate, music, or drama is linked to better academic performance and improved critical thinking and reading skills. Identity & Personal Growth: Trying different activities helps teens figure out their interests, builds self-confidence, and helps them gain more self-awareness. Social Skills & Character: Clubs and sports foster empathy, teamwork, and strong peer connections, making teens significantly more likely to form and keep meaningful friendships. Work & Volunteering Experience: Part-time jobs and community service build real-world skills like time management, financial literacy, and communication with adults. Parent-Teen Connection: Shared activities give parents a natural entry point to check in, discuss life values, and stay connected. Finding the Balance While involvement is great, over-scheduling can lead to stress, burnout, and declining grades. Quality matters more than quantity—even to college admissions officers. Tips for Parents: Focus on Enjoyment: Encourage your teen to try new things, but listen if an activity is no longer serving them. Quitting a high-stress activity to focus on well-being or a new interest can build healthy decision-making skills. Watch for Burnout: Keep an eye out for signs of physical or emotional exhaustion. Remind your teen that downtime, sleep, and health come first. Talk It Through: Help your teen look at their full schedule—including schoolwork and rest—to decide what commitments make sense together. Please encourage your teen to speak with school support staff or teachers if they are unsure of what club or activity to join. • Superintendent's Letter from Dr. Marino, Jr.

District Communication September 25, 2026 Dear Members of the Oxford School Community, I hope you all enjoyed the first month of school! The weather was certainly on our side with cool mornings greeting the students and staff each day. Throughout September, I had the pleasure of welcoming students at all of our four schools. Their smiles and laughter while returning to their school homes were truly infectious. Also, I witnessed their excitement on my first bus ride of the new year.  In addition to our students, we have welcomed 34 new staff members to the OPS family. Please be sure to say hello as you see them throughout the coming weeks. We have introduced ParentSquare as our parent communication tool. The user friendly system is working well, and keeps parents and staff in touch and well informed with all school information. To download the app and get started, click HERE . All our schools hosted their Meet the Teacher nights this month with many parents and guardians in attendance. I hope these events provided insight into the extraordinary learning that takes place in our schools on a daily basis.  You are encouraged to attend Board of Education meetings. Your participation is critical to the success of our students. Please refer to the BOE meeting list HERE to see the dates, times, and location for each meeting. If you are unable to attend in person, please join us live or watch the recording on our YouTube channel.  Our budget planning and development process for Fiscal Year 2028 will begin on December 8th at 6:30 p.m. You are encouraged to attend our meetings and be involved in these important discussions.  HERE are the dates, times, and location for each meeting. I continue to host Superintendent Roundtables with the community at different locations throughout the year. These informal conversations are a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, make suggestions, or just stop by to say hello. The next roundtable will take place on Tuesday, October 20th at the Oxford EMS Building at 448 Oxford Road from 7-8 p.m. The November Roundtable will be held at the Quaker Farms Firehouse on Tuesday the 17th from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. I hope to see you as your schedules allow.  Quaker Farms School  shares that the new school year is off to a terrific start! Students participated in “getting to know you” activities, the celebration of International Dot Day, and Picture Day. Meet the Teacher night was a rousing success! Principal Cacace is actively looking for volunteers to serve on the School Climate Committee and for the Yearbook Committee; reach out if you are interested! Great Oak Elementary School is having an excellent start to the new school year! With everything running smoothly, students are adjusting to their new teachers and daily routines. Mark your calendars—GOES will host its first Town Meeting on October 2nd at 2:15 p.m.  Consider joining the Quaker Farms and Great Oak Elementary’s Parent Book Club this fall!  Starting in October, parents from GOES and QFS are invited to come together to read and discuss Dr. Becky Kennedy’s bestseller, Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be . Whether you are looking for practical strategies to navigate tough parenting moments, or simply want to connect with other local families, this book club offers a welcoming space to share insights, support one another and build a strong school community.  To join, click here for the  Book Club Sign-Up - space is limited to 25 participants! • OHS Capstone Communication_9/23/2026

Oxford High School Date: September 23, 2026 Subject: Oxford High School Capstone Project Dear Wolverines, Oxford High School is excited to share details about our Capstone Experience. This program, offered to seniors during their final weeks of the school year, allows students to explore their passions, develop real-world skills, and celebrate their high school journey through meaningful independent projects, work experiences, or volunteer opportunities. This experience also continues to align with Oxford High School’s Learning Expectations and Attributes of a Graduate: Critical Thinker, Collaborative Learner, Empowered Learner, Productive Citizen, and Effective Communicator. The reimagined Capstone Experience is designed to empower students by engaging them in self-directed learning opportunities. It encourages creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving as students take ownership of a project or participate in a professional work environment. Each student will select an area of interest, craft a proposal, and work with our school-based team to bring their vision to life. Key Components of the Program: * Project-Based Learning: Students may choose to pursue research, artistic creations, community service initiatives, or entrepreneurial endeavors aligned with their passions and future goals. * Work-Based Learning: Alternatively, students may engage in internships or job shadowing to gain firsthand experience in a professional setting. * Reflection and Presentation: At the conclusion of the Capstone Experience, students will present their projects and new learning to school faculty, showcasing their growth and achievements. Timeline: * Proposal Submission: Students will submit their Capstone proposals for approval by March 18, 2027. * Program Duration: The Capstone Experience will take place during the final three weeks of school, May 18, 2027 - June 7, 2027, replacing regular class schedules for participating seniors. * Final Presentations: Presentations will be held on June 7 from 12:00-1:00 in the gymnasium. Please note that this date is subject to change based on any weather-related adjustments to the school calendar. Benefits: The Capstone Experience equips students with valuable skills that will serve them beyond high school, including: * Enhanced time management and organizational abilities * Improved communication and collaboration skills * Real-world exposure to career paths and professional environments * A sense of accomplishment and confidence in their abilities More information about this year’s Capstone will be shared with students and families throughout the year.  Thank you, Heather Heather O'Brien, Principal School Leadership Heather O'Brien Principal Stephanie Sorak Assistant Principal AJ Huston Athletic Director / Dean of Students Oxford High School 61 Quaker Farms Road, Oxford, CT 06478 • 203.888.2468 ohs.opsct.org

Strong communication between school and home is essential for student success. Additionally, we believe (and research supports) that when teachers and parents both have high expectations for students and student's have a strong sense of belonging, learning and achievement will follow. According to Geoffrey Cohen, an author and Stanford professor, "belonging is feeling that we're part of a larger group that values, respects, and cares for us - and to which we feel we have something to contribute". Our HAWKS expectations, as well as our core values developed last year with staff and students, help create the expectations and culture we strive for here at GOES. One of the ways that we can support students and our school community is to help them understand very clearly what we mean when we talk about Having Respect, Acting Responsibly, Working Together, Kindness Counts, and Safety First (HAWKS). Our staff has spent much time in these first few weeks discussing these core ideas and what they mean and look like on a daily basis. We also know that everyone (kids and adults) make mistakes or struggle to make the right choices when confronted with a challenge. In these situations, we want to help students reflect on their choices, take accountability, and plan how to make a better choice in the future. One of the ways we do this is through Think Sheets. A Think Sheet provides an opportunity for the child to reflect and plan, talk it through with an adult at school, and can act as a form of communication that comes home to you so that you can also discuss as a family. If your child brings home a Think Sheet and/or receives a consequence, please remember our primary goal is not the consequence itself, but the learning and reflection that goes with it. When we hold each other and our students to high expectations and cultivate the values that will help build a strong sense of belonging, we are setting the stage for success. Your support and partnership with the teacher makes all the difference in reaching this goal.   Click here to sign up! If you are having any issues with School Dismissal Manager, including an invalid pin or other error messages when checking in for pick-up, please call or email the main office at (203) 888-6492. It was great seeing everyone walking the building and learning more about their student's courses. We would be remiss not to also thank our students and families for their partnership as we reduce chronic tardiness and absenteeism. On Wednesday, September 16, we had 0 tardies, an incredible accomplishment given where we were a couple of years ago. We sincerely appreciate everyone's efforts in getting to school on time, each and every day! Please join me in congratulating our new student representatives to the Board of Education: Brady Coons and Yuna Jang! As members of the Class of 2028, Brady and Yuna are involved in a wide range of clubs and activities across OHS. We look forward to having them serve as strong, dedicated voices for our school community this year. CBITS is an intervention for middle and high school students exposed to stressful and traumatic events. The goal of the intervention program is to help teach students ways of coping with and recovering from traumatic experiences. It includes 10 skill-building group sessions for students and 1-2 individual sessions, held at school. CBITS has been shown to help middle and high school students recover after stressful events. With parent consent, students are screened for eligibility. Students may be eligible if they endorse that they have been exposed to one or more traumatic events and have current post-traumatic symptoms. A randomized control trial showed significant reductions in post-traumatic stress symptoms compared to those who did not participate. Group Sessions 1 hour group sessions once a week for 10 weeks Small groups of 4-7 students Led by the child’s school clinician with special training to run these groups Content: Coping skills, feelings identification, relaxation, positive activities, social support, problem solving, reducing any stress or anxiety they feel about being exposed to a stressful/traumatic event, getting back to doing what they want and need to be able to do. The school clinician will send a letter home to parents/caregivers each week to let them know what their child is learning during these sessions and to let them know how they can help at home. Individual Student Sessions Group leaders will hold 1-3 individual sessions with each student to help them develop their stories about their traumatic events and reduce anxiety related to their trauma memory. Our mission at OHS is to foster a safe community where students feel understood, gain essential tools for growth, and discover that difficult experiences are just part of their story—not their whole identity.
