Weekly Updates Friday, August 25, 2023 Follow us on Spreading the love of reading one Little Library at a time Madera South High School (MSHS) Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students are helping bring literacy to the district by adding Little Libraries to elementary schools. The first Little Library was unveiled last week at Alpha Elementary School. These Little Libraries are an excellent resource for young readers to access various free books. MSHS FCCLA chapter has received over 1,000 books from community members to support this program. It is time for Friday Night Football! Last week, Madera High School and Torres High School kick-started their season with a nail-biting game that ended with Madera High School taking home the victory with a score of 28-27. Madera Unified is proud of both teams! Madera Unified continues to work to keep our schools safe This week students and visitors began using the Evolv Express system during the school day. The non-intrusive detection system can identify dangerous items inside bags and pockets in real time, meaning your child(ren) can walk through the sensors without removing their concealed belongings or separating themselves from personal items. If an item in their possession alarms the system, its green lights turn red, and a photo of the student will be shown on a tablet with a red box around the potentially dangerous item. A trained staff member will then search the area indicated in the alert. As a reminder, here is the Annual Notification Handbook that outlines our district policy listing items prohibited on our school campus on page 53. Click here to watch a video on how the system works and what your child(ren) can expect to see and experience. School zone safety is highly important, so MUSD has implemented measures to protect the community by partnering with local law enforcement to ensure everyone safely makes it to their destination. Here are some helpful tips to follow when driving around school zones by Madera Police Department Safety Resource Officer Priscilla Ramirez . School Safety Legislation: Effective July 1, 2023 The safety and well-being of our students, staff and community is the number one priority at Madera Unified. To ensure a safe learning environment , two bills were legislated in response to the increase in school shootings in California and throughout the United States, some of which are committed by children with access to firearms and whose actions have led to injuries and deaths that could have been prevented. Assembly Bill 452—Pupil Safety: Parental Notification, Firearm Safety Laws School districts shall annually inform parents and guardians of California’s child access prevention laws and laws relating to the safe storage of firearms at the beginning of the first semester or quarter of the regular school term. For more information on Assembly Bill 452, click here . Senate Bill 906—School Safety: Homicide Threats The law states that school officials must report homicidal threats or perceived threats, as defined, to law enforcement, who must conduct an immediate investigation and threat assessment. For more information on Senate Bill 906, click here . Thank you for helping to keep our children and schools safe The health and well-being of students and staff is a top priority for Madera Unified, and it is crucial to establish clear guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within our schools. Above, you will find district COVID-19 guidelines regarding the necessary steps to take if your child(ren) tests positive for the virus. Weekly Updates Friday, August 18, 2023 Follow us on Families eagerly attend back-to-school night It was a busy week at Madera Unified as students and their families visited their schools to meet their new teachers and see some of the great things their campus has to offer. Back-to-school night is the perfect time to talk to your child's teacher about expectations, classroom rules, teaching styles and more. Introducing a new way to keep our schools safe Beginning the week of August 21 our students and visitors will enter through the Evolv Express system during the school day. MHS Girls Softball Win DII Championship!
Madera High School Girls Softball - 2023 CIF Central Section Division II Champions. MHS Girls Softball Wins DII Championship! The Madera varsity softball team played in the DII Championship game on Friday and walked away as champions. Pitcher, Nastasha Griffin, made the first three defensive plays of the game getting MHS back into the dugout and ready to get their offense going. Clean-up batter, Malea Ricks, put the first run on the board for the Coyotes after getting to first off a bunt. First base coach, Alan Revilla, sent Ricks on the first pitch and the steal was successful. Destinee Avila’s hit dropped in front of the centerfielder and Ricks speed took her all the way home. Frontier tied the game in the third after a single, an error and a sacrifice. Griffin’s double put her in scoring position with one out in the fourth inning. Ricks followed with a strong grounder that got passed the shortstop and the left fielder, making it to the fence. Pinch-runner Jayleen Gutknecht rounded third and scored the second run for Madera. Right behind her was Ricks who had turned on the speed and scored the third run and added a homerun to her resumé. Malea Ricks, the Most Inspirational Player recipient, steals second and slides safe. Lady Coyotes get game ready with a pregame huddle. Pitcher Nastasha Griffin winds up for a strike. Frontier fought back as hard as they could in the top of the sixth, scoring one run, making it a 3-2 game. Griffin made contact again, this time finding a gap in right-centerfield, earning her a triple. Gutknecht, pinch-runner for Coyotes, was in the game again, ready to score. An infield single by Ricks scored Gutknecht. That insurance run gave the Coyotes a 4-2 lead to enter the seventh inning. The final, winning play came courtesy of Kimberly Zarasua, snagging a grounder and making the play at first to secure Madera’s fourth Central Section Championship. “I’m so happy for the kids. They have really grown and matured as a team. Coming into this game we had to keep doing what we do,” Head Coach Judy Shaubach said after the win. Freshman, Malea Ricks, walked away with the Most Inspirational Player Award. Malea came through clutch with three hits, two runs, one RBI and a diving catch for the highlight reel. “That is absolutely contagious. You gotta play up to her level, she was just awesome today,” Coach Shaubach said of Malea’s energy and the talent she brought. Adding that Malea might be one of the best base runners she has coached, crediting her knowledge of the game and runner instincts. The next stop on the road to the state championship is today with a game in Modesto, against Central Catholic High School. A win today will advance them to the semi-finals on Thursday, against the winner between Pleasant Valley High School and West Valley High School. Coyotes celebrate their win.
