Superintendent's Newsletter — 5/29/26
Superintendent's Newsletter Proudly serving Brentwood, together. 💚 May 29, 2026 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, As we enter the final weeks of the school year, I find myself reflecting on just how much our students have accomplished and how much there is to celebrate. This time of year always brings a special energy to our schools. The days are filled with field days, concerts, ceremonies, celebrations, and countless reasons to be proud. Everywhere I go, I see students reaching new heights, families celebrating accomplishments, and educators creating opportunities that inspire our students to believe in themselves and their futures. 🎓 Freshman Futures Shine Bright On Monday evening, the Brentwood Freshman Campus held its annual Academic Achievement Awards ceremony, honoring students for their hard work, dedication, and academic success throughout the school year. This ceremony was a true reflection of growth, determination, and possibility. Families, educators, and staff gathered to celebrate students across a variety of subjects and disciplines, but what stood out most was the pride and excitement throughout the room. For many of our students, this was one of their very first high school recognitions. As they made their way to the risers, you could see the smiles, a few nervous faces, and a tremendous sense of pride. Thank you to the Freshman Campus leadership team, our guidance counselors, educators, and staff who work so hard each day to support our students. Your care, encouragement, and belief in our students make all the difference. And to our students, I am so proud of you. I look forward to following your journeys over the next three years and celebrating all that you will accomplish. Before we know it, you will be walking across the graduation stage as the Class of 2029. 🌟 Proud Families, Bright Futures Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the 32nd Annual Suffolk County School Superintendents Association Valedictorians Luncheon alongside Brentwood High School Principal Dr. Dashana Dulin. This beautiful tradition brings together some of Suffolk County's highest-achieving graduates and the parents who have supported them every step of the way. Every year, I leave with a tremendous sense of admiration for our Brentwood students and all they have accomplished. This year, I had the opportunity to spend time with our two valedictorians and their families: • Melanie Ruiz, Valedictorian, Ross Center • Luis Romero, Valedictorian, Sonderling Center As we spoke about their goals, aspirations, and plans for the future, I found myself reflecting on just how well prepared our students are for the next chapter of their lives. They will soon leave our classrooms as proud Brentwood graduates, equipped with confidence, knowledge, and a strong sense of purpose. What made the afternoon even more special was watching their families beam with pride. One parent shared that her son would soon be leaving New York State for college and spoke about how much she was already going to miss him. Meanwhile, her son was talking about how much he was going to miss her cooking. It was such a heartfelt and honest conversation, one that captured the emotions that come with graduation. While graduation is certainly a celebration of achievement, it is also a milestone filled with gratitude, excitement, and love. 🥞 Champions of Character Also yesterday, West Middle School hosted its annual Breakfast of Champions, one of my favorite celebrations of the year. More than 30 students were recognized not only for their accomplishments and achievements, but also for the way they treat others, with kindness, respect and compassion. Several students who have received this recognition more than once spoke to the audience and shared words of encouragement with families and fellow honorees. Their message was simple but powerful: work hard, treat others with respect, set goals, support one another, and never stop believing in yourself. They reminded everyone in the room that every student is capable of achieving great things. I am so proud of our students, their kindness, and the young people they are becoming. To the students honored at Wednesday's breakfast, thank you for leading with kindness and showing us what true leadership looks like. You are our champions. Nuestros campeones y campeonas. Thank you to the West Middle School educators, staff, and administration for continuing this meaningful tradition and for nurturing and caring for our wonderful students. And, of course, to our students' parents and families, this does not happen by chance. You are an essential part of the success we see in our schools each day. 💚 Congratulations to Ms. Harman and Ms. Felix 💚 Last night, Trustee Eileen Harman was honored by the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association and received the Outstanding School Board Service Award in recognition of her leadership and dedication to public education. Those who know Ms. Harman know how deeply she loves this district. A retired Brentwood educator, she carries a lifelong connection to this community that cannot be measured. She has dedicated herself to serving Brentwood's children and families, always placing students at the center of every decision. There is a warmth and sincerity about Ms. Harman that people feel immediately. She listens, she cares, and she leads with both wisdom and heart. Her love for Brentwood is evident in everything she does, and our students and families are better because of her service. Congratulations, Ms. Harman, on this well-deserved recognition. We are so proud of you and grateful for your continued dedication to the Brentwood community. We would also like to congratulate Board President Eileen Felix on her appointment to the Executive Committee of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association. This appointment is a reflection of her leadership, dedication, and commitment to public education. Throughout her years of service, Ms. Felix has been a passionate advocate for Brentwood's students, families, and staff. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that every child has access to opportunities that will help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Her voice is respected across Long Island because she leads with purpose, compassion, and a strong belief that every student can achieve great things when given the opportunity and support to succeed. We know she will continue to be a strong advocate not only for Brentwood, but for public education throughout our region. Congratulations, Ms. Felix. We are proud of this well-deserved appointment and grateful for your continued leadership and service to our community. ✨ Prom Night Tonight, many of our seniors will gather for one of the most memorable milestones of their high school experience, Prom-Night! To our graduates, I hope you enjoy every moment. Dance, laugh, celebrate your friendships, and take lots of pictures. These are memories that will stay with you forever. And to our families, don't forget your cameras. Capture the smiles, the excitement, and the joy of this special evening. These moments pass by far too quickly, and before we know it, graduation day will be here. Have a wonderful evening, make great memories, and most importantly, stay safe. To our extended Brentwood family, thank you for your partnership, your support, and your belief in our students. Together, we continue to create opportunities that empower our children to dream big, work hard, and achieve extraordinary things. Sincerely, Wanda Ortiz-Rivera Superintendent of Schools “Love unites us. Our children inspire us. Together, we rise. Siempre juntos.”

Superintendent's Newsletter — 5/22/26
Superintendent's Newsletter Proudly serving Brentwood, together. 🇺🇸 May 22, 2026 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, This week filled my heart with so much pride as I watched our students continue to shine in so many different ways. From performances and competitions to career exploration and moments of achievement, our students continue to amaze me with their talent, determination, creativity, and heart. I feel so grateful to witness their journeys and to see the many ways they continue to grow and make our Brentwood community proud. Twirling Into History ✨ This past Saturday, our Brentwood community celebrated something truly special as we hosted our very first Baton Twirling Showcase, and what a beautiful debut it was. In Spanish, we call them batuteras, and I have to share that this event touched my heart in a very personal way. When I was five years old, I dreamed of being a batutera and even played with a baton as a little girl. I have to admit, I am not quite sure I still know how to hold one, but our wonderful Brentwood students have already been trying to teach me and may just get me there. What made this event so meaningful was that it represented so much more than a performance. For many families, this was truly a dream come true. Parents asked for this opportunity for their children, and our Board of Education believed in that dream and helped turn it into a reality. This showcase marked the beginning of something new for Brentwood, another opportunity for our students to discover their passions, build confidence, and explore their talents in new and exciting ways. Watching our students perform with such grace, focus, and joy was a beautiful reminder of what happens when we create opportunities for children to try something new and believe in themselves. Our Board of Education has been deeply committed to expanding opportunities like this because they understand that every child deserves the chance to discover their gifts. One of the highlights of the day was seeing a professional baton twirler, who also happens to be one of our Brentwood parents, perform for the families who came to cheer on our students. I personally asked her to perform because I wanted our families and students to experience something extra special, and she brought such excitement, grace, and joy to an already beautiful day. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible coaches, Ms. Boyle and Ms. Thompson, whose guidance and encouragement inspired our students every step of the way. A special thank you as well to our dedicated parents for bringing their children to practice each Saturday and for supporting them throughout this journey. Thank you also to our Board of Education and Athletic Director Steven Davis for believing in this program and supporting opportunities that continue to expand what is possible for our students. We look forward to continuing to build this program and watching it grow. And to our baton athletes, congratulations. You made history, and you made Brentwood proud. Style, Skill, and Scholarship 💇♀️✨ Monday evening’s Brentwood High School Hairstyling Competition was truly extraordinary and filled with creativity, beauty, and so much pride. The talent, artistry, and professionalism on display were simply remarkable. Our student stylists transformed the Sonderling Gymnasium into a showcase of elegance and creativity, demonstrating their skills with confidence, poise, and incredible attention to detail. The results were absolutely beautiful, and it was clear that our students poured their hearts into every look they created. What touched me most was watching students so deeply engaged in something they love. This is what GraduationPLUS+ is all about. Our students were not simply participating in a competition. They were building confidence, refining technical skills, showcasing their creativity, and beginning to see possibilities for their future come to life. I was so proud watching our students step into that space with such professionalism, focus, and passion. A very special thank you to cosmetology instructor Kenia Benjamin, who truly created a beautiful experience for our students. Thank you as well to Brentwood High School Principal Dr. Dashana Dulin and Coordinator of CTE Anthony Ketterer for supporting this outstanding program and helping our students thrive. I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of the judges who took the time to support this event and share their expertise, and to the wonderful models who helped bring our students’ creative visions to life. Your participation helped make the evening even more special. And to our student stylists, I want you to know how proud I am of you. Your creativity, dedication, talent, and hard work were simply beautiful to witness. You made all of us so proud, and we are so excited for all that lies ahead for each of you. A Community that Comes Together 💚 Wednesday evening’s Board of Education meeting was filled with so much pride and joy. The Board recognized an extraordinary group of students whose accomplishments continue to shine both inside and outside of the classroom, including our Brentwood High School Winter Color Guard and many outstanding winter and spring student athletes. What warmed my heart most was seeing the joy throughout the room. Families filled the public meeting room, students smiled as they were recognized, and there was such a wonderful feeling in the room as we acknowledged their hard work, dedication, and achievements. Recognizing our students in this way is always special because it gives us an opportunity to honor their accomplishments and celebrate the many ways they continue to make us proud. The Board also acknowledged the successful passage of the proposed 2026-2027 budget and congratulated trustees Brandon Garcia and Eileen Harman on their election. Thank you to our Brentwood community for your continued support of our schools, your belief in our students, and your investment in the future of Brentwood. When a community comes together the way ours does, supporting one another and investing in our children, great things happen. West Talks, Young Minds Listen 🎤 On Thursday morning, I had the privilege of attending and speaking at West Middle School’s first-ever West Talks, and I left feeling incredibly inspired. This special event brought more than 40 professionals into classrooms across the building to connect directly with students based on their interests, passions, and future aspirations. What made this even more meaningful was that many of these professionals are Brentwood alumni, while others have previously visited our schools and were so impacted by the experience that they returned and even invited colleagues to join them. Our students had the opportunity to engage with judges, police officers, corrections officers, nurses, social workers, cybersecurity professionals, civil engineers, firefighters, drone specialists, and so many others. The variety of careers represented gave our students a chance to see the many possibilities that exist for their future. One of the most powerful moments of the morning took place in the library, where our students led the opening presentation and shared their own stories about their GraduationPLUS+ experiences and what those opportunities have already meant to them at such an early age. Listening to them speak with such confidence, pride, and excitement warmed my heart. There is something incredibly powerful about watching students begin to see themselves in careers and futures they can envision for themselves. It is an even greater feeling to know that they have educators and an entire school district behind them, believing in them and reminding them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. These conversations helped our students see that their dreams are possible and that there are many pathways available to help them get there. I am deeply grateful to the dedicated educators who organized this outstanding event for our students: Kim Johnson, Tara Lallbachan, Elana Spahn, Chantel Mastorakos, Danielle Grunert, and Susan Santana along with Principal Vincent Autera and Assistant Principals Christopher Moraitis and Stacey Powell. Brentwood continues to create opportunities that help our students dream bigger, believe in themselves, and see what is possible. Marching With Pride This Memorial Day 🇺🇸💙❤️ As Memorial Day weekend approaches, we pause to honor the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. We remember them with deep gratitude and hold their families close in our hearts as we reflect on the true meaning of this day. This year, our Brentwood community has an especially meaningful moment as our incredible Green Machine Marching Band travels to Washington, D.C. to march in the National Memorial Day Parade. My heart swells with emotion as I think about our students taking part in such a significant national event, honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. To march on historic Constitution Avenue in our nation’s capital is an extraordinary honor, and I could not be prouder of these talented young people. From Brentwood to Washington, D.C., they will carry with them the pride, spirit, excellence, and heart of this community as they perform on a national stage and take part in this meaningful tribute. We will be cheering them on with so much pride as they represent our community in this unforgettable moment. The pre-show begins at 9 a.m. on May 25, and the parade begins at 10 a.m. Be sure to tune in and support our incredible students as they bring the Green Machine spirit to our nation’s capital. As we head into this long weekend, thank you, as always, for your continued partnership, support, and belief in our students. It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve this beautiful community. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday, May 26. Sincerely, Wanda Ortiz-Rivera Superintendent of Schools “Love unites us. Our children inspire us. Together, we rise. Siempre juntos.”

Your continued belief in our students, staff, and schools means more than words can express. Because of your support, we are able to continue expanding opportunities for our students, strengthening innovative programs, and ensuring that every child in Brentwood has access to the educational experiences they deserve. This vote reflects the trust our community has in the work taking place across our district and the collective commitment we all share to the success of our children. Brentwood has become a model for what is possible when a community comes together with a shared vision centered on students, opportunity, and excellence. I am incredibly proud of the collective efforts taking place throughout our district, with our Board of Education, administrators, teachers, staff, families, and community partners all working together on behalf of our students each and every day. I would also like to extend my congratulations to Brandon Garcia and Eileen Harman on their election to the Brentwood Board of Education. Their dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the Brentwood community are deeply appreciated, and I look forward to our continued work together on behalf of our students and families. In addition, I want to recognize and thank Mr. Thomas Wilson, Ms. Dawn Forde and Mr. Carlos Gomez for their willingness to serve and for participating in this year’s election process. Running for the Board of Education reflects a commitment to community and public service, and we appreciate their interest in supporting the future of Brentwood. I also extend my sincere appreciation to our Board of Education, Cabinet, administrators, teachers, staff, and community members whose support and collaboration continue to move our district forward. Special thanks to our District Clerk, Lindsay Denninger, Dennis Logan, Consultant, and Jeanette Villa, Principal Office Assistant-Confidential, for their hard work and dedication throughout the voting process. Brentwood is a truly special community, and I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside all of you on behalf of our incredible students. Together, we will continue building on the extraordinary work taking place throughout our district and creating even greater opportunities for the children of Brentwood. Superintendent's Newsletter — 5/15/26
Superintendent's Newsletter Proudly serving Brentwood, together. 💚 May 15, 2026 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, This week, our schools have been filled with energy, curiosity, and connection. From conversations about wellness to newly hatched chicks to a carnival filled with laughter and inclusion, this was one of those weeks that continued to showcase just how special Brentwood is. 💚💛 Mental Health matters. We continue to foster a community that feels supported and connected Brentwood’s fourth annual Mental Health and Wellness Fair brought together students, families, staff, and community partners for an evening centered on connection, support, and care. From student performances and calming spaces to conversations with local agencies and wellness resources, every part of the night reflected our district’s commitment to prioritizing mental health awareness in our schools and community. I was also proud to see Board Trustee Brandon Garcia participating in the event alongside the Brentwood Legion Ambulance, where he serves as Captain on the Board of Directors, helping provide important information and resources to families. What I love most about events like this is seeing our students and families come together, ask questions, share experiences, and support one another. It is a reminder that caring for the emotional well-being of our students is just as important as supporting their academic growth. I am proud that Brentwood continues to prioritize the whole child and create spaces where students and families feel supported, connected, and valued. A special thank you to Sean Coffin, Fernando Beltran, the entire Office of Health, Psychological and Social Work Services, the Department of Special Services, our McKinney-Vento liaison, support staff, community partners, and student groups for creating a space where every family felt welcomed, supported, and seen. 🐣 Pajamas, Pollito, Chicken Little, and Plenty of Cheeping Tuesday night brought one of the sweetest moments of the week as I joined Kimberly Savage for a special Facebook Live read-aloud with students, staff, and community members. I was especially excited about this event because it brought me back to my years as a first-grade teacher. Back then, I used a puppet named Pollito to help bring stories to life for my students. Well, Pollito made a very special return on Tuesday night and joined us to read the wonderful story No Interrumpas to the beautiful children and families who tuned into the livestream. At the end of the evening, Ms. Savage brought out three chicks for the students to meet, and the students proudly named them Ash, Cotton, and Lemon. I have to say, Ms. Savage and I had such a wonderful time, and we still cannot stop talking about it. The students filled the livestream with hearts and emojis while also learning fun facts about chicks along the way. The storytime coincided with the district’s first-ever “Chick Week,” and throughout the evening students also learned fun facts about chicks and their life cycle while enjoying the livestream together. There is something magical about watching a classroom full of students cheer for a newly hatched chick. This districtwide celebration of curiosity, learning, and new beginnings is giving students a hands-on science experience they will never forget. Programs like this bring learning to life for our students in such a meaningful and memorable way. Watching their excitement, curiosity, and sense of wonder throughout the week was truly special. My heartfelt thanks to Kimberly Savage, AnnMarie Madsen, John LaSalle, and Dr. Rebecca Grella for their leadership and coordination of our district’s “Chick Week” experience, which brought so much excitement and joy to our students. Thank you as well to all of our teachers who thoughtfully guided students in learning how to care for these beautiful animals, and to Candice Cheng for helping support the livestream experience for our students and families. 🎡 A Carnival of Connection at South Middle School This morning, I had the joy of attending the annual Life Skills Carnival at South Middle School, led by Ms. Jillian Trimboli in coordination with the South Middle School educators and staff. It was truly a beautiful celebration. With sunny skies, sensory activities, music, and nonstop smiles, students, educators, and staff from West Middle School, North Middle School, Southwest Elementary School, and Oak Park Elementary School traveled to South for this end-of-year celebration focused on inclusion, friendship, and fun. My heart was so full watching students laughing together and encouraging one another. I even played my first game of cornhole thanks to one student who patiently showed me the ropes. Another student, proudly sporting pirate face paint, gave me an enthusiastic “Arrrrrrr!” as he walked by, and I am still smiling about it. These are the moments that speak so clearly to the strength of the Brentwood family. When students from across our schools come together in spaces where everyone belongs, it creates something truly meaningful. Inclusion is not simply a program or initiative. It is something our students live every day through kindness, joy, and connection. As always, thank you to our students, staff, families, Board of Education, and community partners for the care and heart you bring to Brentwood every day. Sincerely, Wanda Ortiz-Rivera Superintendent of Schools ⚠️ Important Reminders Budget Vote, Board Election and Memorial Day Weekend Budget Vote & Board Election Our annual Budget Vote and Board of Education Election will take place next Tuesday, May 19. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Families can find their polling location here. Memorial Day Weekend In observance of Memorial Day, schools will be closed Monday, May 25.
