Celebrating the End of the School Year & Our 2025 Gr...
Dear Brentwood Families, As the 2024–2025 school year comes to an end, I want to take a moment to reflect on everything our students have accomplished—and how incredibly proud we are of them. This has been a year filled with growth, achievement, and unforgettable moments. Whether on stage, in the classroom, on the athletic fields, in our music rooms and science labs, or through student leadership opportunities across the district, our students have amazed us with their talent, hard work, and determination. From academic honors to artistic showcases, championship wins to acts of kindness, our children have truly shown what it means to be part of the Brentwood family—resilient, brilliant, and full of unforgettable kindness. Many have also contributed meaningfully to our community through service projects and volunteerism—proving that their impact goes far beyond the classroom. This year, we also had the privilege of honoring many of our exceptional staff members—teachers, administrators, and support staff—who go above and beyond every day to support our students. We also celebrated dedicated members of our Board of Education whose leadership and service continue to guide and strengthen our district. We want to recognize our families as well—your trust, involvement, and partnership have been essential to every success we’ve achieved. The passion, care, and commitment of our Brentwood community—including families like yours—have formed the foundation of our success. Thank you for helping make Brentwood the incredible district it is today. On Saturday, June 28, we will proudly watch 1,200 high school seniors walk across the graduation stage and officially join our alumni community. This moment represents more than a diploma—it’s the result of years of hard work and the constant support of families, educators, and staff. Thank you for being such an important part of their journey. As we head into summer, I hope your family has time to rest, reconnect, and celebrate all that was accomplished this year. I also want to remind you that Brentwood continues to offer summer enrichment opportunities to keep students engaged and supported throughout the summer months. One of those opportunities is our districtwide Summer Reading Campaign, organized by the Office of Language Arts: For students in grades K–8, the theme is “Let’s Blast Off Into Reading!” Students are encouraged to read as much as they can and complete fun reading "missions" throughout the summer. Students in grades K–2 will receive printed materials in their backpacks. Students in grades 3–8 can find all summer reading missions online at www.bufsd.org Students who read the most—and show evidence of their reading—will be recognized and celebrated in the fall! Summer reading expectations for grades 9–12 are also posted on the website. Join us at our Books-to- Home event on Wednesday, June 25 at Central Office or explore our Reading Resources page, which includes free tools like SORA, Newsela, and great book lists for all ages. As I reflect on this year, I’m reminded once again why Brentwood is such a special place. Our district is home to students and families from around the world—each bringing their own language, culture, and traditions to our schools. It is this beautiful diversity and shared commitment to learning and growing together that make Brentwood shine. As we close another school year, I want to thank you—not only for your partnership, but for the love, strength, and resilience you bring to our community. Whether your child is just beginning their educational journey or preparing to graduate with the Class of 2025, please know how deeply we value you. On behalf of the Board of Education, the Cabinet, and the entire Brentwood School District, I wish you and your family a joyful, safe, and restful summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday, September 3rd—a nd until then, remember that in Brentwood, we are always learning, always growing, and always united. Community Newsletter #34 Week of June 9
Community Newsletter #33 June 6, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, As the school year draws to a close, there’s a special energy in the air—a mix of celebration, reflection, and excitement for what lies ahead. This week was filled with moments that speak to the heart of who we are as a community. We began with our beautiful UPK Moving-Up Ceremonies. Our youngest learners danced, sang, and stood proudly before their families and teachers—ready for kindergarten! They looked absolutely adorable, and it’s clear they’re not just prepared for the next step—they’re excited for it. Their joy was contagious, and we couldn’t be prouder. Another unforgettable moment came from Laurel Park Elementary, where students in grades 3–5 performed a school musical directed entirely by two of our dedicated Teaching Assistants, Ms. Brittney Banks and Ms. Justine Velasquez. Their passion for the arts and deep love for our students created something truly special. It wasn’t just a performance—it was a gift. Thank you both for empowering our students, helping them shine, and showing what’s possible when creativity meets care. On Saturday, I joined our Brentwood My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) family for one of the most powerful events of the year—the Empowerment Brunch. The energy in the room was electric—filled with pride, gratitude, and a deep sense of community. We also honored four outstanding MBK seniors—Andres Rodriguez, Emanuel Millan, Brett Osorio, and Tristan Velez—whose leadership has left a lasting impact on the program and those who follow in their footsteps. Presiding Justice Hector D. LaSalle, a proud Brentwood graduate, delivered the keynote address. He reminded us that greatness can begin right here in our own hallways—and even shared that he met his wife decades ago in that same Ross Gymnasium. His words were a powerful reminder of Brentwood’s roots, resilience, and infinite possibilities. A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Nick Scott, our MBK Coordinator, whose leadership has elevated the program with heart, vision, and a deep commitment to our young men. The green blazers, vests, and hats are more than symbols—they represent pride, identity, and purpose. Mr. Scott, your work is building a legacy that will be felt for generations. I also want to express my deepest appreciation to Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos, whose continued advocacy and generous support have been essential to MBK’s success. His belief in our students’ potential is a true example of servant leadership. And to our MBK mentors and advisors—thank you for the steady guidance, encouragement, and care you give to our students. You are trusted role models who make a lasting difference, and we are so grateful for all that you do. This week also brought joyful Moving-Up Ceremonies across our schools. I had the privilege of celebrating with South Middle School, where our eighth graders beamed with pride and readiness. They are more than prepared for high school—and we are excited to see them continue growing into the leaders we know they will become. Last night, we proudly recognized the Top 10 students from both Ross and Sonderling at the Board of Education meeting. Their accomplishments are extraordinary—but it’s their humility, drive, and sense of purpose that truly set them apart. They reflect the very best of Brentwood: a community rooted in hard work, pride, and hope. Their futures are incredibly bright. We also celebrated more than 1,100 adult learners through our Adult ENL programs—including six who earned their U.S. citizenship. Thank you to Lisa Rodriguez, Assistant Principal for Adult ESL at Evening High School, and Denise Murray, TLC Lead Administrator, for their dedication and commitment to our adult learners. A special thank you to Ms. Elisa Alvarez, Associate Commissioner from the NYSED Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages, for joining us at the TLC ceremony. Her words captured it best: “My cup is full.” I think we all felt the same. As we wrap up another extraordinary year, thank you for your continued partnership and belief in our students. Wishing all of our families a joyful and restful Father’s Day—and to all the amazing dads and father figures, thank you for the love and guidance you give each day. Community Newsletter #33 Week of June 2
Community Newsletter #33 June 6, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, When we first began publishing this weekly newsletter, it was little more than a short list — a few bullet points meant to capture the energy of the week. But like our district, it has grown. What started as a simple recap has become something more meaningful: a living reflection of who we are — our students’ triumphs, our educators’ tireless work, and the quiet, powerful moments that define our community. Each edition of this newsletter tells a story. Together, they affirm a simple truth: Brentwood is a district full of momentum — a community rooted in purpose, rising with pride, and building a future grounded in excellence and equity. I share this reflection with purpose. On Tuesday evening, we came together as a community in response to a proposal to open three new charter schools — two in Brentwood and one in Central Islip. I stood before those in attendance not only as an educational leader, but as a proud voice for a district that believes deeply in the power and promise of public education. Brentwood is more than a school district — it is a vibrant, resilient, and proudly diverse family. Our 18,000 students, including more than 6,500 English Language Learners, are supported by devoted educators, staff, and families who show up each day with heart, purpose, and belief in what we are building together. And the truth is undeniable: we are not waiting for change — we are leading it. We are preparing students for college, careers, and civic life through our Graduation Plus+ initiative. We are offering bilingual and dual language programs. We are providing certifications, early college credit, STEAM enrichment, apprenticeships, and extended learning opportunities. We are serving every child — regardless of background, language, or ability — with equity, excellence, and compassion. This is not a district hoping for transformation. This is a district delivering transformation — in our classrooms, in our community, and in the lives of our children. So, for those who were there, and for those just tuning in, the message is clear: Brentwood doesn’t need replication. Brentwood needs recognition. And what our students need most is stability, support, and a school system that knows them, respects them, and is accountable to them. The work is already happening — and the results speak for themselves. What follows in this edition is a celebration of all that we are and all we are becoming. On Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the COPA Soccer Tournament at East Middle School. It was incredible to see our students playing with such pride, passion, and sportsmanship. Watching them compete together and seeing how this program has grown year after year was truly remarkable. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the COPA advisors, especially Hector Martinez, and to all the educators, security staff, and members of our IT department who made this event possible. Your dedication ensured a safe, joyful, and well-organized day for everyone. On Sunday, I had the tremendous honor of serving as the Grand Marshal of the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day Parade. Words cannot fully express what this meant to me — not only as a proud Puerto Rican woman, but as someone who deeply loves this community. Being given the opportunity to represent Brentwood in this way filled me with pride — not just in my heritage, but in all the beautiful cultures that make Brentwood what it is. In Brentwood, we have many flags, many voices — but one united community. To everyone who marched, cheered, and helped organize this celebration: thank you. It was a powerful day of joy, tradition, and unity. I especially want to recognize our amazing students who proudly represented our district in the parade — including members of MBK, the Marching Band, Cheerleaders, the YES Program, Teatro, the Multicultural Club — as well as the educators, administrators, staff, and community members who walked alongside them. You reminded us all what Brentwood stands for. A very special thank you goes to Margarita Espada and Angel Perez for their leadership and tireless work — often after hours — to bring this day to life. Your dedication to the arts and to cultural pride gives our students and families the opportunity to see themselves reflected and celebrated. Thank you for your continued support and for making Brentwood such a remarkable place to live, learn, and lead. On Monday evening, I had the joy of attending Brentwood High School’s annual Scholarship Night — a deeply moving celebration of perseverance, achievement, and the power of community. This year, 181 outstanding seniors were recognized with 290 scholarships totaling nearly $250,000 in awards. These honors reflect more than academic success — they celebrate students who have given their all to school life, the arts, athletics, service, and, in many cases, have overcome extraordinary challenges to reach this milestone. I was especially touched by the generosity of our Brentwood alumni, retired educators, families, and local organizations who continue to invest in our students’ dreams. From future nurses and artists to engineers and educators, the Class of 2025 shines bright — and our community’s belief in them shines even brighter. Following the pride and joy of Scholarship Night, I was honored to join our students, families, and staff once again for our Biliteracy Night celebration — an evening that holds deep personal meaning for me as a proud Puerto Rican woman and a lifelong advocate for bilingualism. This year, 340 students earned the prestigious New York State Seal of Biliteracy, a recognition that honors not only academic excellence, but also cultural pride, global readiness, and the mastery of two or more languages. To see so many of our young people receive this distinction — speaking with confidence, pride, and purpose — was profoundly inspiring. It was a reminder that language is more than a skill; it is a bridge, a legacy, and a powerful tool for leadership in an increasingly interconnected world. Felicidades to all of our recipients — you make Brentwood proud. I want to thank you all for continuing to show up — for your children, your neighbors, and your schools. We are a district that leads with heart, strength, and vision. We made that clear at Tuesday’s charter school hearing — and now, we must continue to make it clear in every way we can. If you haven’t done so already, I kindly ask you to join us in protecting the future of public education in Brentwood by signing the petition opposing the proposed charter schools: 🔗 https://www.change.org/.../oppose-charter-schools-in Together, let’s keep building the school community our children deserve. 💚 On behalf of the Brentwood Union Free School District, I extend our warmest wishes to all who are celebrating Eid al-Adha this weekend. To those observing, we wish you a joyful and peaceful holiday. Eid Mubarak! COPA—which stands for Community, Obligation, Professionalism and Achievement—has hosted the tournament since 2009 with the help of faculty, staff and volunteers. This year’s event featured both male and female teams, with district officials applauding participants for their energy, sportsmanship and dedication on the field. Vendors and local organizations also played a key role in supporting the day, including the U.S. Army, Fidelis Care, Affinity Health Plan, the Suffolk County Police Department, Legislator Sam Gonzales, Suffolk County Community College, La Noticia, OASAS, Liga de Justicia, YES, Rivera-Julka Law Group and Carrion Attorneys. Security personnel and EMS staff were on hand to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Community Newsletter #32 May 30, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, Although this is a short week, there is no shortage of moments to celebrate across our incredible district. Let me begin by recognizing the outstanding dedication and spirit of our Green Machine Marching Band and AFJROTC cadets, who proudly represented Brentwood in the Memorial Day Parade. Their performance was a moving tribute—full of pride, precision, and passion. A heartfelt thank you to our educators Mr. Sitler, Mr. Cohen, Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Ashley, Mr. Gonzalez, Mr. Montero, and Angel Perez, our Coordinator of Performing Arts, for leading the Marching Band—and to Senior Master Sergeant Hanna and Master Sergeant Perez for guiding and inspiring our AFJROTC students. Your leadership and commitment brought this special moment to life. Thank you as well to the dedicated advisors of the YES Program, who marched alongside our students and continue to model the values of service, leadership, and civic engagement. Last Friday evening, I had the absolute pleasure of attending International Night at Brentwood High School, and I was truly blown away. Our students shone as they proudly celebrated their cultures through breathtaking performances, beautifully hosted by our student emcees. The energy, talent, and pride in the room were unforgettable. Special thanks to advisors Gloria Jaramillo and Catherine Marmo for organizing such a powerful celebration of diversity—and to all the staff and educators who brought the event to life. Our students’ brilliance and creativity were on full display, and it was an honor to be there. Please join me in congratulating our Board of Education First Vice President, Julia Burgos, who was honored this past Wednesday evening with the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association’s Outstanding School Board Service Award. This prestigious recognition reflects her unwavering dedication to our students, her advocacy for families, and her tireless service to the Brentwood community. We are proud and grateful to have her leadership on our team. 💚 Yesterday, our Unified Basketball Team played an exciting Senior Day game against West Islip—and what a performance it was! The gym was electric filled with cheers, claps, and contagious joy. Our students played with heart, determination, and incredible sportsmanship. After the game, they celebrated with pizza and snacks courtesy of SEPTA. Special thanks to Mr. Jimenez, Ms. McNicholas, Ms. Johnson, and our Varsity Basketball Team for their outstanding coaching and support throughout the season. I also had the joy of watching our sixth-grade students at East Middle School perform in the band, orchestra, and chorus—many of them playing their instruments for the very first time as middle school musicians. They performed beautifully in front of a full auditorium, and I was truly impressed by their talent, courage, and composure. I can’t wait to see next year’s performance! A heartfelt thank you to their dedicated music teachers—Ms. Yamagishi, Mr. Cromwell, Mr. Baboukis—for inspiring a love of music in our students. A big congratulations to the remarkable students recognized at last night's Achievement Awards ceremony at the Freshman Campus. Your dedication, resilience, and accomplishments have filled our school community with pride. We look forward to all the great things you’ll achieve as you move on to Brentwood High School next year! Tonight, our Senior Class of 2025 celebrates their prom, and I can’t wait to see them all dressed in their beautiful gowns and suits. I know it will be a magical evening—one they’ll remember for years to come. I’m so proud of them and all they’ve accomplished. It’s hard to believe they’ll soon be Brentwood alumni! Looking ahead, please remember that on Tuesday, June 3rd at 6:30 PM, we will be holding a Charter School Public Hearing in the Public Meeting Room at Central Administration. Your voice matters, and we hope to see many of you there. In addition, on Wednesday, June 4th from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, our Information Technologies department in partnership with our Family Community Center will be assisting families with in-person registration for our Summer Enrichment Programs at Central Administration. We encourage all interested families to take advantage of this opportunity to support their child’s continued learning and growth this summer. As we head into the final weeks of the school year, I’m reminded every day of the heart, dedication, and energy that define this community. Brentwood never stops—there’s always something meaningful happening in our classrooms, on our fields, and in every corner of our district. And finally, we invite everyone to join us this Sunday, June 1st, at the Puerto Rican Day Parade to celebrate culture, unity, and community. Community Newsletter #31 Week of May 19
Community Newsletter #31 May 23, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, This week has been filled with powerful reminders of why we do this work—moments of compassion, leadership, inspiration, and joy that reflect the very best of our Brentwood community. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Brentwood Board of Education proudly honored five exceptional staff members whose commitment to student well-being and community care reflects the heart of our district. We recognized Byron McCray, Director of Safety; Mike Rodriguez, Assistant Director of Safety; Jessica Price, High School Assistant Principal; Maria Jackson, High School Social Worker; and Ruth Cosme, High School Dropout Prevention Counselor. These outstanding individuals have demonstrated exceptional care and teamwork in countless ways. Recently, our safety team—along with Ms. Price and Ms. Jackson—responded with urgency and compassion to support a family in need. Their actions, built on the strong relationships they’ve developed with our students and families, made all the difference. I am so proud of the way our staff show up each day—building trust, offering support, and strengthening the connections that make Brentwood such a special place to learn and grow. Ms. Ruth Cosme was also recognized for the extraordinary impact she makes each day. She is known for her compassionate support—particularly for our immigrant families—and for going above and beyond by earning a degree in social work to better meet the needs of our community. Her office has become a second home for so many students—a place where they feel seen, supported, and empowered. That same spirit of care and empowerment was beautifully reflected in Saturday’s Girls Inc./Girls United Empowerment Event. It was an unforgettable day filled with strength, sisterhood, and joy. Our girls danced, shared their stories, held hands, and—most importantly—felt seen, heard, and valued. This event was a dream realized, made possible through the dedication and heart of Stephanie Weeks, Kenia Nunez, Susan Dunbar, Vincent Todisco, and all the INCREDIBLE ADVISORS who worked behind the scenes to bring it to life. From the phenomenal presenters to the outstanding Master of Ceremonies, every moment was filled with energy and inspiration. As one advisor said so perfectly: “One of my girls really needed to hear this.” The impact of those three powerful hours will stay with our girls for years to come. They left saying proudly: We are strong. We are powerful. We are beautiful. We are loved. We are grateful. 💜 We also saw Brentwood’s brilliance on full display at the STEM Fair, organized by Jess Ulrich, Grace Ferraioli, Jennifer Costa, and Michael McCaffrey. This joyful celebration of science, creativity, and community featured more than 20 interactive stations—from slime-making to circuitry challenges—and created an environment where curiosity and collaboration thrived. What made the event especially meaningful was seeing our high school students lead the presentations, serving as role models for younger students and showing the power of student-led learning. Thank you to the entire team for making this enriching experience possible for our students and families. As we head into Memorial Day weekend, let us take a moment to reflect on the meaning of this day. We remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, and we carry their legacy forward by nurturing a community grounded in respect, care, and unity. Join us for the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26 at 8:30 a.m. beginning at the Brentwood Cemetery, located at the intersection of Madison and Jackson avenues. Around 11:30 a.m. there will be a final ceremony outside of the DiPietro Learning Center, including a wreath laying and rifle salute. Also, please be advised that schools will be closed May 26-27. Students will return on Wednesday, May 28. Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership. With the support of the Board of Education and the strength of our school community, we are building a Brentwood where every child feels safe, supported, and inspired to succeed. Honoring Diversity: Celebrating Heritage and Service As we continue to observe and celebrate the rich heritage and contributions recognized during the month of May, we also have an opportunity to learn more about the impact of global health observances like World Multiple Sclerosis Day and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who serve. May 17 – Armed Forces Day Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May each year to honor the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. Established in 1949 to replace separate days for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, this day promotes unity among military branches and encourages Americans to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families. May 26 – Memorial Day Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, is a solemn day of remembrance for those who have died in service to the United States. Originally known as Decoration Day, it began as a way to honor fallen Civil War soldiers. In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, as the official birthplace of Memorial Day, recognizing a local 1866 ceremony that included flying flags at half-staff and honoring veterans. In 1971, Memorial Day became a national holiday, expanded to honor all Americans who have died in military service. May 30 – World Multiple Sclerosis Day World MS Day is a global awareness event for everyone affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It unites the MS community to share stories, raise awareness, and advocate for change. Although officially marked on May 30, activities take place throughout the month and into early June, reflecting the ongoing commitment to finding a cure and supporting those impacted by MS. Community Newsletter #30 Week of May 12
Community Newsletter #30 May 16, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, This week reminded me of just how vibrant, talented, and committed our school community truly is. From student celebrations to family events and staff recognition, it has been a week filled with joy, pride, and purpose. I’m excited to share just a few highlights with you. Earlier this week, Brentwood High School held its annual Leadership Awards Ceremony, shining a well-deserved spotlight on students who go above and beyond in academics, service, and school involvement. From the moment the first name was called, the auditorium came alive with applause, cheers, and proud smiles. Students high-fived one another and celebrated their peers with genuine joy, creating an atmosphere full of pride and unity. Many of our honorees were called to the stage multiple times—a true testament to their dedication and the strength of this extraordinary school community. The ceremony recognized our Top 10 academic seniors, as well as standout leaders from programs such as AFJROTC, My Brother’s Keeper, after-school clubs, and more. It was a powerful tribute to the passion and perseverance that drive Brentwood’s student leaders—and a reminder of the bright future they are shaping. Congratulations to all the honorees who continue to inspire through their leadership, hard work, and commitment to the Brentwood community! 👏 And to our seniors—believe it or not, graduation is just 43 days away… or about 200 class periods. The countdown is on! 💚 That same evening, SEPTA President Ms. Sibilly and her executive board hosted a beautiful Appreciation Dinner for our dedicated special education teachers and staff. The theme, “It takes a big heart to shape little minds,” perfectly captured the spirit of the event. I had the privilege of sharing my gratitude—not only for what our educators do each day, but for how they do it: with heart, care, and a genuine belief in every child’s potential. On Wednesday, Oak Park Elementary was full of energy and curiosity as families gathered for an exciting STEAM Night! The school was transformed into a hands-on science playground, where students and their families explored everything from slime stations and robotics to drones and live reptiles. Events like this bring learning to life in fun, meaningful ways—and remind us that discovery is a family affair. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who made it all possible! This week, I also had the pleasure of hosting the Superintendent’s Roundtable with our incredible Teaching Assistants from across the district. During our time together, they learned more about the Graduation Plus+ initiative and reflected on the meaningful impact their work has on student success every day. The roundtable was a powerful reminder of how dedicated and insightful our Teaching Assistants are. Many are proud Brentwood graduates, and those who are not expressed how honored they are to serve this extraordinary district. Their commitment to our students and our school community was evident in every word. I want to sincerely thank our Teaching Assistants for all they do—and for believing in our students. Their voices matter, and their contributions will help shape our core strategic plan, which places a strong emphasis on collaboration and the empowerment of all stakeholders. Today, the Speech and Hearing Department presents the National Speech-Language-Hearing Month Celebration 2025 at East Middle School, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Each May, this national observance raises awareness about communication disorders and honors the essential work of ASHA professionals. This year’s theme is “Communication Around the World.” I hope you’ll come celebrate with us! There will be raffles, food, books, games, entertainment, and much more. And don’t forget—this Sunday, May 19, is National Speech Pathologist Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible work of our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs). These dedicated professionals ensure that every student has the tools to communicate with confidence. Their compassion and expertise transform lives, creating deeper understanding and connection in our school communities. Community Newsletter #29 Week of May 5
Community Newsletter #29 May 9, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, As this special week of recognizing our educators comes to an end, I want to take a moment to once again express my deepest gratitude to the incredible educators who bring Brentwood’s mission to life every single day. This afternoon, as I watched East Middle School students perform “High School Musical Jr.,” I couldn’t help but reflect on how thankful I am for the way our educators guide, inspire, and believe in our students. These moments of encouragement and connection happen every day—and I want to say from the bottom of my heart: Thank You. Your care, professionalism, and tireless dedication uplift and empower our students in countless ways. 💚 This past weekend marked an exciting milestone: Brentwood hosted its very first LEGO League competition! After weeks of preparation, nine student teams wowed us with their creativity, teamwork, and STEM skills as they tackled this year’s underwater-themed challenge. The room was full of energy, innovation, and joy—what a proud moment for our budding engineers and for our entire school community. What stood out most was the collaboration, problem-solving, and passion that filled the space. These young engineers proved that when given the opportunity, they rise—and they shine. Congratulations to all nine teams and thank you to everyone who helped make this incredible event possible. We can’t wait to see where this momentum takes us next! Also on Saturday, I had the joy of attending the end-of-year celebration for the Language Immersion Program at East Elementary School—a program very close to my heart. Held every Saturday morning, this initiative brings together native English and Spanish speakers in kindergarten through second grade for immersive, dual-language instruction that builds both academic skills and cultural understanding. Seeing our youngest learners grow in confidence and fluency—in dos idiomas—was truly moving. The students performed bilingual songs for their families and teachers, proudly showcasing their growth. Families also enjoyed a special bilingual performance by guest storyteller Félix Pitre, who brought to life the rich traditions of Latin America through music, stories, puppetry, and dance. You could feel the pride and excitement in every corner of the room. I’m so proud of this program and deeply grateful to the educators, administrators, and families who make it possible. On Monday, I had the privilege of attending Brentwood High School’s Unified Basketball home opener—and I left the Sonderling gym inspired and smiling. The energy was electric, with cheers echoing through the stands and joy lighting up the court. What stood out most was the heart behind every play. Students cheered for both teams, and the gym overflowed with unity, support, and celebration. Kudos to Coaches Anthony Jimenez and Megan McNicholas, and to our amazing student-athletes—including members of the girls’ varsity basketball team—who made the event so special. Whether scoring a basket or sharing a high-five, every player reminded us of the power of inclusion and connection. The team plays again today at 4 p.m. at the high school—I can’t wait to cheer them on! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Town of Islip’s Earth Day Poster Contest awards ceremony, where our students were recognized by Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Brentwood proudly swept the 5th–8th grade category, earning first, second, and third place! These students created artwork that was not only beautiful but also deeply meaningful, demonstrating a clear understanding of the importance of protecting our planet. It was inspiring to see their creativity celebrated on such a meaningful platform. Congratulations to: Sebastian Avila, 8th grade, East Middle School – 1st Place (Ms. Shim’s class) Anggie Maldonado Martinez, 5th grade, North Elementary – 2nd Place (Ms. Pontillo’s class) David Vera-Alfonso, 5th grade, Twin Pines Elementary – 3rd Place (Ms. Cavanaugh’s class) This achievement reflects the talent of our students and the dedication of the educators who nurture their growth every day. I am incredibly proud of them all. As we head into the weekend, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate all the mothers, abuelas/nanas/grandmothers, guardians, and maternal figures in our Brentwood community—including the many incredible women who serve as educators, staff members, and leaders in our schools. Every day, we see the impact of your care—whether it’s in the encouragement you give, the values you instill, or the quiet sacrifices you make to help your children thrive. Your love, strength, and support shape not only your own families but also the lives of the students you teach, guide, and nurture here in Brentwood. You’ve raised remarkable children—and you continue to inspire, uplift, and care for so many others across our classrooms and schools. Whether you’re cheering from the sidelines, helping with homework, leading a lesson, or offering a comforting word at the end of a long day—your presence makes a lasting difference. On behalf of the Board of Education and the Cabinet, thank you for the powerful role you play in our schools and in our students’ lives. Community Newsletter #28 Week of April 28
Community Newsletter #28 May 2, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families and Staff, This past week has been a beautiful reminder of what makes Brentwood such a special place. Across our schools, fields, and hallways, I witnessed the kind of connection, dedication, and joy that reflect the heart of our community. On Saturday, April 26th, we proudly hosted the Autism Walk and Mental Health Awareness Event at Brentwood High School, organized by SEPTA and PTSA in coordination with our Department of Special Services. It was a powerful day—filled with compassion, inclusion, and hope. With more than 99 vendors on site, families had access to valuable resources and support, creating an atmosphere of unity and empowerment. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Sibilly, Ms. Odom, the SEPTA and PTSA Boards, Mr. Sean Coffin (Coordinator of Health, Psychology, and Social Work), Mr. Beltran (Administrative Intern), as well as our school psychologists and social workers for organizing this event with such care. I’d also like to recognize our Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team and their coaches for leading the walk with pride and energy. Watching our student athletes step forward to lead such an important community event was truly moving. That kind of leadership reflects the strength and heart of our Brentwood students and community. That same spirit was on full display again at our Financial Literacy Family Night, held Monday, April 28th at the Freshman Campus. Families from across the district attended free, hands-on workshops covering topics from credit basics and saving to entrepreneurship and insurance. It was a fun and informative evening—and a great example of how we’re preparing students not just for tests, but for life. Thank you to Mr. Aaron Marsh (Coordinator of Math and Business), Maureen Carrion (Teacher on Special Assignment), our building principals, educators, and all the presenters and families who made the event such a success. I especially loved seeing our business students assisting throughout the evening. I was so impressed to hear them share their goals—future accountants, entrepreneurs, and financial analysts in the making! It’s inspiring to know that Brentwood is sparking those dreams and providing the electives and guidance to help our students explore business and career pathways. I also had the great pleasure of attending a special celebration honoring our Boys Varsity Soccer Team, who were recognized alongside their families, coaches, and the Board of Education for an incredible accomplishment—four consecutive seasons as undefeated League I Champions. To our graduating seniors: thank you for your leadership and for leaving behind a legacy of excellence. To our returning athletes: I know you will carry the torch with the same discipline and pride. Congratulations to all, and a special thank-you to Coach Ron Eden and the entire coaching staff for believing in our students and helping them reach their highest potential. This week also included two Departmental Awards Ceremonies—one for our sophomores and juniors, and another for our graduating seniors. These events were more than a celebration of academic success; they were a testament to the resilience, character, and determination our students demonstrate every day. To every honoree: we are so proud of you. You inspire us with your effort and your spirit. Keep striving, keep leading, and keep shining. On a more personal note, I was deeply moved while attending Brentwood High School’s annual “Say Yes to the Dress” event. Thanks to the generosity of local boutiques, community members and staff, our students had the opportunity to choose from a beautiful selection of dresses, shoes, jewelry, and makeup—all in preparation for prom. One of the most touching moments was when a senior student hugged me after trying on a dress. That hug was filled with pride and a quiet sense of accomplishment—she knew she was almost there, so close to graduation. This event is a true reflection of the Brentwood spirit—where kindness and support come together to make dreams come true. And today, we celebrate one of the most joyful milestones of the school year: College Commitment Day. Our seniors have worked hard and now they’re taking the next step toward their dreams. Whether they’re heading to a university, community college, or trade school, they are living proof of what’s possible when passion meets perseverance. To the Class of 2025—congratulations, you’re almost there! We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish. Finally, I invite you to join us this Sunday, May 4th, at Brentwood High School for the 30th Annual Gary Mintz Memorial 5K Run/Walk, beginning at 9:00 a.m. It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, support a great cause, and celebrate the spirit of unity that defines Brentwood. I hope to see many of you there. Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and dedication. Each of you helps make Brentwood not just a school district, but a community where every student has the chance to thrive. Community Newsletter #27 Week of April 21
Community Newsletter #27 April 25, 2025 Dear Brentwood Families, Staff, and Community, Spring has arrived in Brentwood, bringing with it a season of growth, celebration, and renewed energy across our schools. From joyful hallway displays to student milestones, this time of year reminds us why we do this work—and just how much our students have accomplished. Tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, the district will host its annual Autism Walk and Mental Health/Wellness Fair at Brentwood High School. Held in honor of Autism Awareness Month, this event will feature student performances, a sensory room, more than 60 local vendors, music, food, raffles, and more. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and the walk steps off at 10:00 a.m. It’s a day full of community, celebration, and support—and we hope to see you there! As I continue visiting our schools and meeting with building administrators to reflect on this year’s accomplishments and discuss goals for the year ahead, I’m constantly amazed by the passion they bring to their work and their deep commitment to our students and staff. Everywhere I go, I see their vision for success come to life—on classroom walls, in student projects, and especially in our kindergarten rooms, where the growth from September to now is nothing short of remarkable. It fills me with a sense of pride that’s hard to put into words. I’m incredibly grateful to our educators and staff for the care, dedication, and heart they pour into supporting every student. Yesterday, I had the honor of witnessing our senior student-athletes commit to their colleges—a proud and emotional moment for them, their families, and all of us. Their success is our success. It’s a reflection of hard work, perseverance, dedication, and passion. As they continue their athletic journeys in college, we could not be prouder of the resilience, focus, and commitment they have shown. Whether through athletics or the arts, our students continue to impress us with their talents and spirit. Last night, I had the joy of attending the High School Spring Concert, where our student musicians filled the auditorium with vibrant energy and beautiful music, guided by our outstanding music educators. It was a true celebration of creativity, skill, and collaboration. At this week’s Board of Education meeting, we had the pleasure of recognizing some truly exceptional student-athletes—young people who have not only broken records but made history right here in Brentwood. Their accomplishments are a testament to what can happen when hard work, perseverance, and belief come together. Nilson Juarez helped break the school record in the 200 Medley Relay for Boys Swimming, demonstrating the power of talent, trust, and teamwork. Jossyn Lemus is now the Boys Badminton Singles Record Holder, thanks to sharp focus and strategic play. Adrian Peña and Tevin Zavala set a new record in Boys Badminton Doubles, showcasing outstanding partnership and perseverance. Angelo Feliciano broke the school record in the Boys Varsity 1000 Meter Run, raising the bar with grit and endurance. A heartfelt thank you to their dedicated coaches—Judy Daniels, Allison DeFalco, Andrea DiMaria and Blake Crespo—for guiding and inspiring these outstanding athletes. There’s something really special I want to share with you this week—something that beautifully captures the lasting impact our educators have on their students. Over spring recess, Katie Reidy, a former Oak Park Elementary student, returned to Brentwood to paint a mural in the very school where her journey began. What made this moment even more meaningful is that she created the mural alongside her fifth-grade teacher and lifelong friend, Michele Bodanza. Together, they imagined a joyful scene—an animal dance party complete with a DJ—that celebrates creativity, connection, and community. With Ms. Bodanza retiring this year, the mural stands as a lasting tribute to their bond and the legacy they’ve built together. Katie, now a successful muralist and instructor, brought her story full circle. And just above her signature, she spray-painted a message for every student who walks through those doors: “You Are Worthy.” A message rooted in the love, belief, and encouragement that Brentwood educators pour into their students every day. Wishing you a wonderful weekend filled with fresh air, bright moments, and all the inspiration this season brings. Sincerely, Wanda Ortiz-Rivera Superintendent of Schools Honoring Diversity: April Observances that Inspire Awareness, Appreciation and Action April is a month rich with opportunities to deepen our understanding, express gratitude, and strengthen our community by honoring the diverse experiences of those around us. Administrative Professionals Week | April 20–26, 2025 Administrative Professionals Day | April 23, 2025 Originally established in 1952 as National Secretaries Day, this observance has evolved into Administrative Professionals Week—a dedicated time to honor the essential contributions of administrative professionals across all fields. These individuals are often the backbone of our schools, offices, and organizations, ensuring that daily operations run smoothly and effectively. Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate their hard work, dedication, and professionalism. School Bus Driver Appreciation Day | April 22, 2025 School Bus Driver Appreciation Day is observed annually on the fourth Tuesday in April. Originating in California, it became an official observance in 2009 to draw public attention to the dedication and care school bus drivers show every day. These individuals play a vital role in the safety and well-being of students, often serving as the first and last school contact each day. Let’s show our appreciation for their enduring contributions. Autism Acceptance Month Autism Acceptance Month promotes inclusion, understanding, and support for individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Throughout April, communities and organizations host events and educational opportunities to highlight the strengths, needs, and voices of people on the spectrum. From school settings to healthcare and housing, the focus is on creating inclusive spaces where all individuals can thrive. Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month Observed each April in recognition of Dr. James Parkinson’s birth month, Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month sheds light on this complex neurodegenerative disorder. In recent years, there has been increased attention to both motor and non-motor symptoms of the disease, as well as advancements in research and care. This month encourages education, advocacy, and compassion for those living with Parkinson’s and their caregivers. Earth Day | April 22, 2025 First organized in 1970, Earth Day is a global movement that continues to inspire environmental action and awareness across generations. Alumni Spotlight Bryana Ventura | Associate Director of Digital Strategy “Being able to create and explore my interests way before even going into college was really helpful,” she said. “I was introduced to all the different types of career paths within this industry. I think being part of something like radio and TV at BHS, really gave me experiences that most people don't get until they have graduated college and are in the workforce. It was really valuable. I'm grateful for the teachers I had who gave me freedom to really dive into it.” Brentwood Alumni Hub 🎓🌟🤝 Helpful Links 🌟📎💡 Work with us!
