Stick around after drop off if you can! DIRECTOR'S DESK As we step into the 2025–2026 school year, I want to highlight our CCDS Learner Profile. Created by our staff and community, it reflects our hopes for students beyond the standards, both inspirational and aspirational. It calls our students to grow with curiosity, compassion, and connection. Each month we focus on one Learner Profile outcome; this month, it’s community: the daily practice of learning and growing together, supporting one another, and building something bigger than ourselves. Now, as we wrap up week three, routines are beginning to settle and the rhythm of learning is taking shape. It’s powerful to see students move from the excitement of the first days into the steady pace of discovery and growth. At home, small routines like a consistent bedtime, a daily highlight conversation, or a quick morning “ready-to-learn” check-in all help students feel grounded and energized. Together, we’re building a joyful, curious community of learners and it sure is incredible! Warmly, Wendy SCHOOL NEWS GET READY TO RUN! The Jog-a-Thon is the first big PAC event of the year. And it's not just a fun event for students, it's also the biggest fundraiser for our school! The main event takes place on Friday, 9/26, but the fundraising officially starts on Monday 9/8. Information and registration details will come home with students on 9/8 - check those backpacks! step 1 is to register your student(s) on the FundHub website (it's quick and easy) step 2 is to share the fundraising link far and wide! students will be rewarded along the way with prize raffles at morning flag salutes (9/15, 9/22 and 9/29) Have questions? Monday's info packets will have all the details. Want to help? Join the Jog-a-Thon planning committee and help PAC make this event a success: https://bit.ly/3JffnDZ. Or simply attend our Jog-a-Thon meetings Wednesday mornings after drop off in Room 19!   SAFETY REMINDER We know drop off and pick up at CCDS is busy, and that we're all trying to get where we need to be on time. Please remember, even in our busyness traffic laws must be adhered to: be especially mindful at our crosswalks - look out for our crossing duty staff and students be a good neighbor - don't double park or block the driveways of the residents around our school the 3-minute loading/unloading zone means 3 minutes! Don't treat this as a parking spot   ASP NEWS Reservations for October ASP and TK Intermission are now open and will close on September 25 In order to plan and schedule staff, please make sure to reserve your days by the deadline. We will not be able to accommodate drop-ins or late additions As staff members are getting to know everyone, please be prepared to show ID when picking up your student. This is a safety measure and part of the ASP participation policy Note our new ASP pick up location: find us in room 16, formerly the business office. We want to summarize that information here for those of you who were unable to attend, and to make sure all families receive the same message regarding our process. Please take a look at the video below, and reach out with any lingering questions.   UPCOMING CHARTER RENEWAL CCDS is in a charter renewal year—what does that mean? Different than a traditional district school, Charter schools regularly renew their charter, aka the school’s “educational contract.” For CCDS, this is an opportunity for us to demonstrate we are meeting California’s strict accountability standards. This will be a year-long process and involves us submitting our Charter Renewal to Chico Unified in June of 2026 for approval. CCDS is on the highest performing track, so we are up for a 7 year renewal, which is great news! Our charter renewal is a multi-step process that includes a detailed report, a school site visit, and a public decision hearing. Our renewal involves the entire CCDS community: staff, parents, board members, and community partners. Our goal is to keep our families informed every step of the way. Keep an eye out for regular updates in this newsletter and additional communication as needed. When we have our public hearing in the fall of 2026, we’d love to have your support at that meeting! If you're interested in reviewing our current charter, it’s available here. You can always pop by Wendy’s office or reach out to her if you have interest in this process and would like to get involved.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about our charter and this renewal process.   COMMUNITY DINNER AT CHIPOTLE Don't miss it - the first Community Dinner of the school year is happening at Chipotle. Community Dinners are organized by PAC, and are the perfect combination of dinner made easy while mingling with other CCDS families. And bonus: this is also a fundraiser for our school! Join us on Wednesday, 9/3 from 5-9pm at Chipotle on East Ave At the 962 East Ave location only Dine in the restaurant with other CCDS families at 5:30pm, or come by whenever it works for you! Our campus is full of energy, joy, and curiosity as students settle into their new classrooms and reconnect with friends and teachers. Thank you for partnering with us to make the opening of the school year such a success. We've loved having you all back on campus! We know a lot of information has been coming your way as we get the school year rolling. Beginning next week, our CCDS eFlier will be sent out once a week on Thursdays. This will be your go-to source for announcements, reminders, and upcoming events. Teachers will also have communication routines with you all as well.  Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome you to Back to School Night next Tuesday. This is a special opportunity to step into your child’s classroom, hear from their teachers, and get a glimpse of the engaging learning that lies ahead this year. We look forward to connecting with you and sharing more about the journey your child will take in their class community. Thank you again for your continued support and for being such an important part of our school community. Warmly, Wendy   SCHOOL NEWS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Save the date for Back to School Night on Tuesday 8/26! To accommodate parents with students in multiple grade levels, we've created staggered times and two sessions for 1st-5th grade parents. Attend the session that works best for your situation: TK/Kinder: 5-5:30pm 1st-5th grade SESSION 1: 5:30-6pm 1st-5th grade SESSION 2: 6:05-6:35pm Middle School: 6:40-7:30pm Back to School Night is another opportunity to take care of your LIveScan volunteer requirement, which can be done in the Design Den (room 19). Use code LBGKZ8L at checkout and 25% of sales will go back to CCDS Good for dine-in OR online to-go orders   DROP OFF/PICK UP PROCEDURES We're aware that school drop off and pick up is a busy time, and keeping everyone safe is our priority. Please take a few moments to review these important procedures: The curbs along 11th Street and Broadway Street are for student loading/unloading, and there are signs indicating where these 3-minute zones begin and end. Please honor these zones: do not park longer than 3 minutes, do not leave your car unattended, and do not double park! Do not arrive to school early to hold a parking spot along the loading/unloading curbs. This violates the 3-minute zone and makes the traffic back-up worse. Broadway and 11th Street need to be treated as a true loading/unloading zone in order to keep traffic flowing and ease the backup of cars. If you would like to arrive early and park your vehicle, there are plenty of spots throughout the neighborhood. Please help us be good neighbors! Be mindful of private driveways and keep those clear at all times. Helpful tip for pick up: we've noticed that arriving a few minutes after the bulk of cars leave is best, around 2:40-2:50pm. Thank you for your patience and for following these protocols so we can keep everyone safe!     ASP NEWS ➡️Reserve your days for September ASP and September TK Intermission by August 25: September ASP TK Intermission ➡️Pick up for ASP will be in our new location! We're in room 16, formerly the business office. Please use the links below to learn more about each offering and sign up: chorus concert choir 🎶ALL SCHOOL SING: All School Sing will be happening this year on most Fridays from 1:50-2:15 (pprox). All elementary grades gather in the gym for a joyful sing-along, led by our amazing 5th grade musicians. Families and fans are welcome to check in at the office and come join us! This is also a time when classes might share a song they've learned in music class, so keep your eye out for a notice from your student's teacher about that sometime during the school year! 🎶SUPPORT MUSIC: We are looking for a parent volunteer to help us with sound tech during All School Sing. We have a good system but it is very challenging for me to lead the music and run the sound at the same time. If you have time on Friday afternoons and have some experience with sound boards, speakers and different types of microphones, please consider spending some of your expertise on our All School Sing tradition! Contact Ruth Greenfield if you're interested: rgreenfield@chicocountryday.org Last year we broke through a good number of our drums! If you happen to have some bongos, djembe drums or floor toms in a corner gathering dust, we could use them in the music room! Other instruments we use a lot are xylophones in the C scale, wood blocks and mallets.   PAC UPDATES PAC CLASSROOM COORDINATORS PAC is now seeking Classroom Coordinator volunteers! Back in February, I was invited to be a guest on the Community Builders podcast. The episode just went live, and I’ll admit—I was a little nervous to share it! In the conversation, I talk about my journey into school leadership, my connection to family, and the heart behind the work we do at CCDS. We also touched on student-centered learning, project-based learning, and how tools like AI are beginning to shape education. It reminded me of what we ask our students to do during exhibitions—share their thinking, reflect on their growth, and speak from the heart. This felt like my own version of that. If you’re curious to listen, you can find the episode here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2425601/episodes/17164438 As always, thank you for being part of this community. Warmly, Wendy SCHOOL NEWS END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS It’s hard to believe we’re already nearing the end of another school year. What a journey it’s been! As we look ahead to these final weeks, here are a few of our most cherished end-of-year traditions. These moments give us the chance to slow down, celebrate how far we’ve come, and look ahead with hope and excitement for what’s next. BRIDGING CEREMONY On the morning of the last day of school, June 5, we’ll gather together on the field for our annual Bridging Ceremony. Families, bring your blankets and your cheers! This tradition is such a joyful way to recognize each class and honor the growth of every student as they “cross the bridge” to their next grade level. It’s one of our favorite mornings of the year—full of smiles, hugs, and sometimes a few happy tears. The event lasts about an hour, and students will return to class afterward. 8TH GRADE CELEBRATIONS As our 8th graders prepare to launch into high school, we have some truly special events planned to honor them. Our wonderful 7th grade families and PAC will host a dinner and dance for 8th graders and their parents during the last week of school—a tradition nearly 20 years strong that brings our 8th grade families together for a beautiful, heartfelt celebration. We’ll also hold our 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony at CCDS at 3:00 pm on June 5th. It’s always a moving event, filled with pride, reflection, and excitement for the adventures ahead. FLY UP DAY During the final week of school, students will have a chance to meet their teacher and classmates for next year during a short 25-minute visit. They’ll do a fun activity together—maybe a game, art project, or letter from a past student—to start building connections. Families often tell us that Fly Up Day helps ease summer nerves and gives students a little spark of excitement for what’s to come. Students who aren’t returning to CCDS will attend a special “Going Away Party,” where they can share memories and say goodbye in a meaningful way. These transitions can bring up lots of feelings—excitement, nervousness, even sadness—and that’s okay. Here’s a resource we love that helps kids name and talk through big emotions—something we often use here at school, too.   YEARBOOKS CCDS yearbooks are selling fast! There are only 50 copies available for purchase - order yours HERE. We will continue to accept orders until they sell out. Yearbooks are distributed to students in their classroom during the last week of school. The exact day of distribution has not been determined yet.   REMINDERS LIBRARY BOOKS are due this Friday, 5/23. If your child still has books at home that belong to the CCDS library, please make sure those get returned directly to the library or dropped off in the office. Any medications left behind will be properly disposed of after 6/5. 8TH GRADE HIGHLIGHTS: Capstone Advisory Brunch: 5/28 from 9-10:30 am Dinner/Dance: 6/2 at 5:30 pm Graduation: 6/5 at 3 pm   GUM ON CAMPUS We hate to burst your bubble...but students are not allowed to chew gum on campus! We're finding gum stuck on lunch trays and left on walkways. It's a time consuming (and gross) nuisance! Thank you for helping us keep our campus clean by reminding students to keep gum at home.   SAFETY REMINDER We all know that drop off and pick up time at school is BUSY! We'd like to take a moment to remind everyone to be a safe and courteous driver out there: be patient and leave yourself plenty of time pay attention to our crossing duty staff (and thank them for keeping everyone safe)   don't leave your car unattended in the loading/unloading zones, and no double parking be a good example - our kids are watching!   SUMMER MEAL PROGRAMS SUN BUCKS SUMMER MEALS: California’s Summer EBT program, known as SUN Bucks, is returning in 2025. This food program provides families $40 per month for food in June, July, and August ($120 total) when children do not have access to school meals. Most children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application or Universal Benefits Application, or get CalFresh, CalWORKs, and/or Medi-Cal, are automatically enrolled. It might not always be visible at first glance, but it’s there—in a child’s confidence as they present their learning at an SLC, in the curiosity sparked by a meaningful project, in the connections formed between classmates and teachers. This is the kind of work that matters most. And it’s the kind of work we’re proud to do. At CCDS, we believe that learning should be relevant, joyful, and deeply rooted in relationships. We believe students thrive when they feel known, challenged, and supported. And we believe that when you invite children into meaningful work, they rise to the occasion. These are the stories worth sharing—not because they’re flashy, but because they remind us what school can be. So here’s our promise: we’ll keep celebrating the small wins, the big milestones, and the moments in between. We’ll continue sharing what we see each day—students growing into confident thinkers, collaborators, and creators. And if you happen to see a moment like that yourself—a beautiful project, a thoughtful reflection, a spark of joy—feel free to share it with us and our community. Because good work is worth doing. And the best work is worth sharing. Warmly, Wendy SCHOOL NEWS STATE TESTING RESULTS If your student participated in CAASPP state testing, some (not all) of the results may be available in your Aeries Parent Portal starting tomorrow, 5/16. Student Score Reports (SSRs) will continue to be release every weekday as more assessments are scored and ready for reporting. Test results provide insight into your child's academic abilities; however, it's important to recognize that these results are just one of many indicators of a student's skills and potential. Each child brings a unique set of skills and experiences that might not be reflected in these tests. We encourage you to look at these reports, along with the body of work your students have completed this year, including Exhibitions, student-led conferences, and Progress Reports. As a school, we will be looking at trends, growth over time, and diving into this data as well.  How to Access Results (also see photo): Log on to your Aeries Parent Portal, the link can be found on our website at www.chicocountryday.org Select "Test Scores"   TEACHER/STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK We're feeling the love! First, we extend heartfelt thanks to Mr. Hunsicker, who has been teaching 7th and 8th grade math. We are grateful for his time at CCDS and wish him all the best in his next chapter. We also send warm wishes to Mrs. Sullivan as she transitions to a new role in a different district—thank you for your dedication and care for our students. We wish Jenna Buhring all the best as she moves back to her hometown. Jenna has worked with students as an Education Specialist and as a classroom teacher and she will certainly be missed! A very special congratulations goes to Debbie Hardesty, who will be retiring this year after an exceptional career in education. Debbie has brought joy, enthusiasm, and heart to her classroom every day. Her impact on students and colleagues alike has been immeasurable. She is truly one of a kind, and we will miss her dearly as she steps into a well-earned retirement. Looking ahead, we’re excited to share some internal transitions and new team members: Mrs. Brusato will be moving from 1st grade to the middle school to teach 7th and 8th grade math. She was drawn to teaching years ago with the idea of becoming a math teacher, and we know she’s going to be amazing! Erin Lizardo, currently our ASP Coordinator, will return to the classroom and join a teaching team next year. Erin has been an incredible asset to ASP and we look forward to her impact on the classroom level.  An additional, non-classroom internal shift is Kelly Sutton joining us full time as School Registrar. Kelly has been in the library this semester and will continue in that role for the time being while adding on this new role of supporting our enrollment process. We’re thrilled to welcome two new teachers to our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teams, and are in the process of hiring one more teacher to complete our elementary team. As soon as hiring is complete and we have all grade level teams set, we will introduce our new staff. We are thrilled with the skills and experience they are bringing to CCDS! Thank you for your continued support as we build a strong and caring team for the year ahead! Warmly, Wendy SCHOOL NEWS RE-ENROLLMENT SURVEY DEADLINE Please note, tomorrow is the deadline to submit the re-enrollment survey for the 2025-26 school year. Thank you!   TEACHER/STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is May 12th - 16th. Yes, this is a week later than traditionally celebrated!
