Camp Invention Ignites Young Minds
CAMP INVENTION IGNITES YONG MINDS FOR 14TH YEAR! While many students begin summer vacation by relaxing, a select group of first through fifth graders in the Hyde Park Central School District are keeping their brains working by participating in engaging STEAM, or science, technology, engineering, arts and math activities at Camp Invention. The first session, June 29 to July 2 at North Park Elementary School, had students make their own planet model that supports life and future exploration and create wearable devices with miniaturized technology. K-12 Director of Math & Science Kim Knisell noted that the camp has proved popular with students, with some declaring it better than sports camps. Students attend free thanks to a federal Stronger Connections Grant, awarded by the New York State Education Department. A second session of the camp will be held the week of July 28, with each session hosting 110 students. The grant is designed to expand safe and supportive learning opportunities for students. “The kids really have a great time using their minds to innovate and complete challenges,” Knisell said. “Camp Invention is about the kids being inventors.” The camp also provides opportunities for older students to volunteer. The first session had the most student volunteers, with 39 Franklin D. Roosevelt High School and Haviland Middle School kids, many of whom are Camp Invention alumni, assisting the younger students on their projects. “I’m really proud of them; some of them are looking to go into education, so they get a really good experience to see if they’re interested in that,” Knisell said. “We really couldn’t run the camp without them.” Soon to be senior Abby Tester remembered having fun at Camp Innovation and became a student volunteer so she could give the younger students the same experience she received, adding that she appreciates how creative they are. “I love seeing how their minds work and how they use their imaginations to create new solutions,” Tester said. “I hope they keep creating and using their imaginations to see what they can come up with.” Soon to be fourth grader Carter Hadde most enjoyed participating in the “Fur-ensics” activity where she compared animal tracks and reviewed digital evidence from surveillance footage to determine who committed a crime. She highly recommends the camp to her fellow students. “It helps us grow and it helps us get stronger,” Hadde said. “You should try it and if you want to, tell your parents.”
