  • Important Information for Parents: Online Safety and...

Dear Parents and Guardians, We are writing to share important information about online safety and to raise awareness about concerning internet “challenges” that sometimes circulate on social media. One such example that has been mentioned in past years is the  “Blue Whale Challenge” — an alleged online trend that reportedly encouraged participants to complete a series of risky or harmful tasks. While there are no confirmed, widespread incidents of this specific challenge circulating at this time, we remain alert and are actively monitoring online spaces for similar manipulative or dangerous trends that may emerge. Our priority is to ensure students stay safe, both in person and online. What You Should Know Harmful online “challenges” often spread through social media messages, private chats, or hidden groups. Participants may be contacted by individuals who use fear, manipulation, or secrecy to gain control. These activities may appear under various hashtags or coded language. Adolescents who feel isolated, anxious, or stressed may be more vulnerable to online influence. How You Can Help Talk openly with your child about online trends and potential risks in a calm, non-judgmental way. Encourage transparency about their social media use, and pay attention to unusual secrecy or distress. Discuss online manipulation — explain that any group or person asking them to perform harmful acts, keep secrets, or isolate from family and friends is not safe. Report concerning activity to the social media platform and, if necessary, to local law enforcement. Reach out for help if your child shows signs of anxiety, withdrawal, or distress. Our school counselors and support staff are available to provide guidance and resources. Our Shared Goal Together, we can help students develop the critical thinking skills and confidence they need to navigate online spaces safely. By staying informed, talking regularly, and working as a community, we can prevent harmful influences and ensure our students’ well-being. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe. Warm regards, Excelsior Charter Schools
