May 12, 2023 Parent Newsletter
Parent Newsletter May 12, 2023 Superintendent's Message This year is quickly coming to an end with planning and opportunities for Summer School well underway. With over 550 applications for summer school to be held at Bear Mountain Elementary and so many opportunities for academic skills practice, science, art, physical education/sports, and expanded learning opportunities the hours of 8 to 2:00 or 8 to 5:00 will be full of fun and excitement. Our partnerships with Boys and Girls Club, Entrusted Legacy, a nutrition group, Skyhawks Sports, and district staff have us excited and hopefully you are too! If you haven’t already applied, there is still time. Preschool, TK, and Kinder enrollment continues!! Please see the wonderful secretaries at one of our school sites to pick up an enrollment packet. Those students with completed packets are the first to be placed in classrooms as we prepare for the upcoming year !!! Thank you, Georgia Rhett School News District English Learner Committee Thank you to the members of the District English Learner Advisory Committee !!! Photography and Art Club Student Showcase Heather Gospich and Larry Horton, teachers of after-school art and photography clubs, presented their students’ work in an early afternoon art show at El Camino Real with support from our Expanded Learning Opportunity Team – Trisha Mason and Veronica Mejia. Beautiful art and photographs filled the cafeteria with students ready to share their work. As clubs continue next year, we encourage students to take part in these expanded opportunities after school !! Math Alignment Math teachers throughout the district have been meeting for professional development with support from math consultants at Kern County Superintendent of Schools. Over a period of 2 days for each grade level, they have utilized state math frameworks to guide decisions for determining essential standards and pacing them through the calendar for the 2023-2024 school year to ensure district alignment. Representatives from each school attended to join their grade-level peers for this work. A huge thanks to these teams! Around The Campus Parenting Partners Our Parenting Partners Spring workshops were completed in March. There was a total of 18 graduates! Workshops were held weekly for six weeks at Bear Mountain Elementary School in English and Haven Drive Middle School in Spanish. Sessions were held in the mornings and afternoons. Workshops focus on parenting and leadership skills to help parents and guardians contribute to their children's academic success. We encourage all parents and guardians to participate in workshops and to also become workshop facilitators. We are excited about our upcoming fall workshops which will also include the Family Meals Challenge! We hope to see you there! Health and Wellness Get Moving Today! Summer is almost here! Week 1: Take a walk. Each time you see a sign of spring do 10 jumps for joy. Motions of the weather. Use your body to pretend to be different types of weather. Rain, wind, thunder, snow...get creative. Practice your throwing skills. Find a big target and throw as hard as you can at it. Work on stepping right at the target with your "opposite" foot. Rainbow Run. Talk about the colors of the rainbow and as you name a color run and touch three things that are that color. Log Rolls. Find a safe space in your house and practice rolling in a straight, strong line. Use those muscles. Week 2: Silly Run. Get outside and run. Try running in a straight line, a curvy line, and then a zigzag line. Pretend that your elbow or your foot is a great big crayon, and move all around your home coloring the most beautiful picture. Can you leap? Pretend that your house is full of puddles and your job is to leap over all of them. Don't get wet! Find an extra chore that will help you become a better mover (sorting clothes to work on throwing skills; sweeping the floor to work on strength). Statues Game. Put your body into a balanced position and hold it while you count to 10. Try a more challenging position.
