FCP Connection January Newsletter
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools January 12, 2026 From all of us at the Canton City School District: The Family, Community, and Partner Connection is designed to celebrate the people who shape our schools, strengthen our community, and leave a lasting impact on our students. Each month, we hope to highlight a community partner, an alumnus, and a district family. This month, we are honored to dedicate this issue to one extraordinary individual who embodied all of those roles and so much more. Mayor Tom Bernabei was a proud graduate of the Canton City School District, a devoted family man, a tireless advocate for public education, and a lifelong champion of the City of Canton. His belief in our students, his unwavering support of our schools, and his commitment to service left an indelible mark on our district and our community. He did not simply support Canton City Schools in word, but in action, standing beside our leaders, our staff, and our students at every opportunity. This dedication is shared with deep gratitude and respect. We honor Mayor Bernabei’s legacy, his service, and his belief in the promise of Canton City Schools. His impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. Mayor Tom Bernabei: A Legacy of Service and Commitment Former Canton Mayor Thomas Bernabei dedicated more than five decades of his life to faithfully serving the City of Canton and Stark County, the community he proudly called home. A lifelong Stark County resident and a 1964 graduate of Lehman High School, Tom went on to graduate from Brown University in 1968. Mayor Bernabei first answered the call to serve his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of Captain. Following his military service, he earned his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1975, graduating at the top of his class. He went on to serve the community in numerous leadership roles, including Assistant Prosecutor, Canton Assistant Law Director and Law Director, Stark County Commissioner, and Interim Director of the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority. In 2015, he was elected Mayor of Canton, a position he held for two terms. Congresswoman Emilia Sykes captured his legacy best when she said, “In every role, he brought fairness, humility, and a true commitment to helping his community.” Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mayor Bernabei was an avid fan of the Cleveland Guardians and The Ohio State Buckeyes, and he loved spending time with his beloved dog, Rosie. Among all of his achievements, he considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment. He supported them in all of their endeavors and consistently prioritized family time. Mayor Bernabei was both a proud graduate and a strong advocate of the Canton City School District. He worked collaboratively with district superintendents to promote Canton City Schools and partnered with his daughter, Kimberly Kingsbury, CCSD Executive Director of Accountability and Federal Programs, to create opportunities for Canton City students to gain meaningful work experience with the City of Canton. He was a passionate supporter of the McKinley Bulldogs, especially during Rivalry Week, starting the annual Mayor’s Beat Massillon Parade and Pep Rally downtown. One of his most memorable moments came when he appeared in full football gear at the McKinley/Massillon Breakfast, delivering a motivational speech that ended with the words, “Put me in, coach!” Mayor Bernabei believed deeply in the potential of the Canton City School District and demonstrated that belief by chairing the CCSD Levy Campaign in 2004. His leadership helped secure the passage of the levy, resulting in the construction of new school buildings and providing long-term financial stability for the district. His contributions continue to have a lasting and meaningful impact on Canton City Schools. Mayor Tom Bernabei passed away on December 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, integrity, and compassion. He made the City of Canton stronger, including the Canton City School District. Our district will forever be grateful for his leadership, his advocacy, and his unwavering belief in our students. December 2025 FCP Connection
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools December 8, 2025 Family Spotlight The Klonowski Family For the Klonowski family, Canton has always been home. From childhood days at Belle Stone and Harter Elementaries to local family traditions like the 33rd Annual John Klonowski Memorial Scratch Singles Bowling Tournament held in at Eastbury Bowling Lanes in February of this year, the Klonowskis have deep roots in the community. Tony Klonowski continues that legacy as Branch Relationship Manager at Consumers National Bank’s Downtown Canton location. Through his work, they support Canton City Schools, local athletics, and community initiatives, helping families and students thrive both financially and personally. "Consumers National Bank is a proud supporter of Canton City Schools and Athletics, and I personally look forward to continuing to grow our partnership through supporting Canton City School's employees, families, and students through financial education opportunities and being a community-based option to help with all banking needs." – Tony Klonowski We love when our Family Spotlight and Community Partners overlap, and this month we’re proud to feature Tony Klonowski and celebrate a legacy that blends family, community, and partnerships. Community Partner Spotlight Building Empathy, Skills, and Connections through Horses Whispering Grace Horses provides a safe and positive environment where healing, growth, and connection flourish through the bond between humans and horses. Our Job Training students have the opportunity to visit Whispering Grace, gaining hands-on experience caring for the horses through feeding, grooming, and general maintenance. These experiences teach practical skills while fostering empathy, patience, and teamwork. By partnering with organizations like Whispering Grace, our students develop valuable life and job skills while contributing to a meaningful cause. We are proud to support their mission of building connections, nurturing growth, and making a lasting impact on the lives of both the horses and the people who care for them. Alumni Spotlight A Legacy of Kindness: Dave Tomey and Feed Kids First Dave Tomey, a Timken High School alumnus, lived a life devoted to service, quietly supporting children, the elderly, and those in need. Growing up in a large, immigrant family on Canton’s Northeast end, he experienced poverty firsthand—his family never even owned a car. These early challenges shaped his compassion and lifelong commitment to helping others. After serving in the military, Dave built a career at Conrail while supporting his family as the eldest son. He gave generously of his time and heart: delivering blankets to Refuge of Hope, shopping for winter coats for children in need, visiting nursing home residents, and preparing meals for friends who were ill. Though not wealthy, he showed that kindness requires only a good heart. In his honor, the Pantry at the Timken Career Campus was dedicated posthumously, supported by the Tomey Family and Feed Kids First. The dedication plaque reads: “In recognition of a life devoted to kindness, generosity, and service to others. Your legacy continues to nourish children and families through the work of Feed Kids First, ensuring every child has access to healthy food they need to learn, grow, and thrive. Feeding Children. Fueling Futures.” Through this pantry, Dave’s legacy continues, helping children and families across the community access the healthy food they need to grow and thrive. Family & Community Event Highlight Celebrate the Holidays in Style We had a jolly good ole time as Canton City Schools welcomed more than 500 families and students for our very first holiday photo event! Our Bulldogs munched cookies and popcorn, enjoyed festive activities, and of course, got unlimited time with the “big guy” himself… and his mischievous friend, The Grinch. It was sweet, it was silly, and it was a whole lot of holiday fun—just like a Bulldog celebration should be! Did You Know Would you like to be a volunteer? CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools November 3, 2025 Family Spotlight Giving Thanks for the Best Families Around This month, instead of highlighting just one family, we want to say THANK YOU to all of our incredible families! From your generous donations during McKinley/Massillon Week, to celebrating together at the Father–Daughter Dance, to joining us for Senior Night at Dave and Busters, you show us every day that our families are truly the very best. Bulldog Pride Citywide isn’t just a logo, it’s a reflection of the care, support, and spirit you bring to our community! Thank-you for being the best families around! Community Partner Spotlight Exploring Neighborhoods and Leadership: TomTod’s What If 101 Program Engages Students This fall, middle school students explored their communities and learned from local leaders through TomTod Ideas in Canton, OH, a nonprofit that helps middle schoolers in Stark and Summit counties follow their curiosity and collaborate on ideas that matter. As part of TomTod’s What If 101 program, 7th graders from Crenshaw, STEAM, and Early College middle schools participated in “Speedy Interview Plunge” events, asking local leaders what it means to be a good neighbor. These meaningful conversations inspired students to see their potential as future community leaders. Thank you to everyone who shared their time and perspective! Alumni Spotlight Isaiah Smith – From CCSD Career Tech Student to Community Leader Isaiah Smith, a Timken High School Class of 2015 graduate, has come full circle—returning to support the same CTE programs that helped shape his future. His journey began in Mr. Weaver’s classroom at age 15, where he discovered a passion not only for his studies but for helping others. Even as a student, Isaiah dreamed of using his skills to make a difference in the community. Today, he is an integral part of MentorStark, serving as an Opportunity Guide and daily mentor for CTE students at Canton City Schools. Isaiah attends trips, leads classroom presentations on career readiness, shares lunch with students, and builds meaningful relationships to help connect them with resources and opportunities. As a certified Peer Recovery Supporter and a graduate of Leadership Stark County’s Spotlight program, Goodwill’s Project Blueprint, and Stark State, Isaiah exemplifies the impact of CCSD’s programs. His story is a testament to how one student’s dedication and heart for service can grow into a career that inspires and empowers the next generation. "We are proud to have Isaiah as part of MentorStark—and even prouder that he’s giving back to the same mentor and program that supported him years ago." —Laurie Moline, Founder/Executive Director, MentorStark Family & Community Event Highlight A Magical Night with the Fatherhood Coalition What do you do when more than 75 princesses descend on your campus? You grab the camera, of course! This fall, we teamed up with the Stark County Fatherhood Coalition to celebrate the special bond between fathers and their children, starting with the annual Fathers Walk Your Child to School Day and continuing with our Father–Daughter Dance, held October 16 in Timken Commons. Designed for CCSD families with students in grades K–5, the evening was filled with music, laughter, and memory-making as dads and daughters shared a meal, danced to a live DJ, and posed for photos together. Thanks to the event’s sponsors and to everyone who helped make the night possible — registration filled in just one day! The Stark County Fatherhood Coalition works year-round to empower fathers to take an active, positive role in their children’s lives, strengthen families, and build a community where the role of fathers is promoted and respected. CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools October 13, 2025 Family Spotlight Pre-Engineering at CCSD: A Tradition in the Anderson Family At Canton City Schools, some classrooms don’t just shape students—they spark family traditions. This month, we’re proud to spotlight the Anderson family, where a father and all three of his children have shared a remarkable connection through our Pre-Engineering program. Years ago, Kevin Anderson sat in Mr. Bill Small’s drafting class, the foundation of today’s Pre-Engineering program. His path led him to become a self-employed artist, where creativity and design remain central to his work. Following in his footsteps, daughter Romy Anderson studied Pre-Engineering under Mr. Chad Weaver before graduating from Kent State in Textile Design. Today, she thrives in Cleveland as a textile artist and teacher at Praxis Fiber Workshop, blending tradition and innovation on both hand and digital looms. The Anderson legacy continued with Joey, who, before earning a BFA in acting from Montclair State, also took Pre-Engineering during his junior year. Now the youngest, Jace, proudly carries the torch—balancing his Pre-Engineering class with his roles in the McKinley High School band and as a three-year letterman on the Bulldog swim team. And while mom Jennifer may be a Hoover grad, we hear she’s more than happy to cheer on her Bulldog crew! Seeing multiple generations of one family connect through the same program is a powerful reminder of the lasting legacy built in our classrooms. Canton City Schools continues to inspire learners—past, present, and future—to dream big and build boldly. Community Partner Spotlight The McKinley/Massillon Rivalry: More Than a Game!
