CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection, May 202...
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools May 12, 2026 Family Spotlight Meet The Milligan Family Rich and Laura Milligan, along with their daughters Rachel, Sarah, Anna, and Faith, share a deep connection to McKinley Senior High School and a lasting commitment to serving others. Rachel, Sarah, Anna, and Faith are all proud graduates of McKinley Senior High School. Rich is a graduate of Lehman High School and served on the Canton City School Board of Education for 17 years. These young women are proud Alumni of McKinley and are forever grateful for the memories and experiences that shaped their journeys. All are currently in careers that serve others. McKinley helped build the confidence, character and determination they carry into adulthood today. Rachel received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Currently, she is owner and operator of the Bristol Academy of Music offering music lessons and classes to over 200 students in the region. She is the Music Leader at Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church. Sarah is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at the Cleveland Clinic, specializing in pediatric and cardiac anesthesia. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2022 and serves on the faculty for the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University Nurse Anesthesia Program. Sarah also serves on the Board of Directors for the Ohio State Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Anna received her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from The University of Michigan and her Masters degree in Applied Behavior Analysis with a certification in Autism. She is a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst). She is currently the Director of Implementation at Lumery, a healthcare tech company that sells software solutions to organizations working with individuals with autism. Faith earned her Bachelors Degree in Education from Loyala University of Chicago and received her Masters of Education in Instructional Coaching and Teacher Leadership this spring. She is a Language Services Facilitator at the middle school level. She teaches students who are new to the United States and/or speak another language, helping them bridge to the English language. Many of her students come from Ukraine and Russia. She is in charge of modifying and advocating for that student population. She engages multilingual families in the school community by organizing and executing events like Newcomer Thanksgiving. The family values community involvement and volunteering. Laura and Rich co-chair the McKinley Band Dinners, along with Jennifer Anderson, through a mission of Christ Presbyterian Church. This mission provides dinners for the McKinley Marching Band and cheerleaders throughout the season. As Alumni, Rachel, Sarah, Anna and Faith continue to represent the spirit, pride, and excellence of McKinley and Canton City Schools in all they do. Alumni Spotlight Christopher Daniels, Turning Purpose into Profession From the classrooms and fields of CCSD to the courtroom, this Christopher Daniels has truly made his mark. As a dedicated member of both McKinley's Speech and Debate team and McKinley's Track and Field team, he learned early how to use his voice and push beyond limits. He credits his success to the unwavering support of his family and the exceptional educators at CCSD, especially his Speech and Debate teacher, Mr. Halkias, and Track and Field coach, Mr. Pappas, who helped shape his journey. He didn’t just face obstacles. He hurdled over them, both literally and figuratively, demonstrating resilience, determination, and purpose every step of the way. At the heart of his journey is a deeply personal mission. He dedicates his success to his grandfather, Andrew “Bob” Smith, who was never given the opportunity to attend school and had no more than a third-grade education. When asked what he would have become if given the chance, his grandfather answered simply: a lawyer. Inspired by that dream, Christopher pursued law school with the goal of making it a reality, not just for himself, but for his grandfather. In a powerful moment, he received word that he passed the bar exam on his grandfather’s birthday. It was a full-circle achievement, a legacy honored, and a dream fulfilled. Congratulations, Chris! We are proud of you and look forward to all you will accomplish. *Special thanks to Tiana Walker, CCSD Counselor and Aunt of Christopher Daniels for the Alumni Spotlight submission. Community Spotlight Bridging Classrooms and Community: MentorStark’s Impact on CTE Students MentorStark continues to be a valued community partner, creating meaningful connections between our Career Technical Education (CTE) classrooms and the broader community. Through mentorship, career exploration, and hands-on experiences, MentorStark helps prepare our students for success beyond high school. In addition to facilitating ongoing trips to connect with local employers and having a staff member embedded to mentor CTE students, their impact has been felt across multiple initiatives. In November, MentorStark created Senior Resource Day specifically for our CTE students, providing guidance on financial aid, college planning, employment opportunities, and career pathways in the trades. That same month, they partnered with the Stark Community Support Network to support a Community Health Worker Project, giving students in Nursing, Exercise Science, and Law and Public Safety hands-on experience in communication, problem-solving, and connecting families with community resources through real-world role-play scenarios. More recently, in April, MentorStark hosted the Walk & Talk: A Mega Mentoring Event at the Bulldog Activity Center, where any CCS student ages 14 and older had the opportunity to connect with more than 40 professionals representing 13 different industries. These opportunities bring learning to life, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful ways. MentorStark serves as a bridge between education and community, ensuring our students are prepared, connected, and confident as they take their next steps. Register Today for Adult Ed Opportunities at CCSD It’s Never Too Late: Build Your Future with Canton City Schools Adult Education Did you know that Canton City Schools has an Adult Education program that offers a comprehensive program providing a nontraditional pathway to learning and personal growth? Designed for individuals seeking new opportunities, this program empowers students with the knowledge and skills needed to build a brighter, more promising future. Canton City Schools Adult Community Education Center offers the following: Nail Technician, Medical Assistant, Medical Insurance Billing and Coding, Practical Nurse Program, Welding and Certified Nurse Aide. Below are some testimonials from nontraditional students in the program. For more information, call 330-438-2556 or visit www.ccsdistrict.org/AdultEd. Keegan Barringer, Practical Nurse Program "Nursing is something that I have thought about for some time. I was originally hesitant about entering this field, but I had a positive experience in a hospital setting. My daughter had a battle with cancer and the nursing staff inspired me to want to become a nurse. She is now three years in remission." "I was a welder and worked for a company for 7 years that abruptly shut down. This gave me the opportunity to pursue schooling to become a nurse." Aaron Thomas, Practical Nurse Program "I wanted to become a nurse because of my love to help others and I am lucky enough to go through the program with my beautiful wife." "I do not regret the decision to join this program in the slightest. I would do it again and recommend this program to all who are interested in entering the field." Kinnidi Mclendon, Welding "I chose the welding field because it seemed challenging. It seems easy but hard at the same time. There’s always something more to learn." "I’m very happy with the decision I made. It's a skill that can take you many places and you can teach others." Annette Brown, Welding "Honestly, what made me want to become a welder is the stability and the art of welding. Since I am an artist, it makes sense to be a welder. I have always loved the idea of how metals mesh and mend together to hold structures and maybe one day I can open my own business." "I’m very happy I made the choice to become a welder because now I know I have a stable career that’s going to take me far for the rest of my life." CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection, April 2...
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools April 14, 2026 Family Spotlight A Legacy of Learning and Innovation: The Loukas Family Story Nicholas Loukas, a 1995 graduate of Timken High School, began his journey in Canton City Schools as a student in College Prep and Drafting under Mr. Small, a program that has since evolved into today’s Pre-Engineering CTE pathway. After graduation, he applied those skills as a summer drafter in the City of Canton Traffic Engineering Department. He earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2000 and spent five years working with a consultant before returning to serve his community. Since joining the City of Canton in 2005 as an Assistant City Engineer, he has advanced to his current role as Traffic Engineer. Nicholas has remained closely connected to his roots, serving on the Pre-Engineering CTE Advisory Council since its inception and supporting students through his involvement with the C.A.M.P. Program at ECHS since 2016. His wife, Shelly, is also a civil engineer and owner of Loukas Engineering, a firm specializing in traffic counts. Through both her work and personal commitment, she regularly supports and sponsors student activities and organizations across the district. The Loukas children continue this tradition of excellence. Kenna, a 2024 McKinley ECHS graduate, earned associate degrees in Science and Arts and is now in her second year at the University of Cincinnati studying Business Analytics. During high school, she was a multi-sport athlete, earning a letter in football and two letters in soccer, while also participating in Speech and Debate and choir. Yanni, a McKinley sophomore, will join the Pre-Engineering program next year. He is an active student-athlete, earning a letter in wrestling and competing on the baseball team, and serves as a representative in the Stark County Youth Leadership Academy. Olympia, an eighth grader at ECHS Middle School, is involved in orchestra, where she plays the violin, and choir. She looks forward to continuing her involvement at ECHS and competing on the high school tennis team next year. Together, the Loukas family represents a powerful example of how education, dedication, and community connections can shape generations. Alumni Spotlight From Bulldog Athlete to Coach: Ashley Stroud’s Journey of Strength and Heart Canton McKinley High School alum Ashley Stroud is a 2001 graduate, former multi-sport athlete, and Female Athlete of the Year. She is proud to be back in the district, coaching and working with the next generation of Bulldogs. Ashley is married to her husband, Marcellus, also a McKinley alum. Together they have three daughters, Ava, Lola, and Mila, who play volleyball and attend STEAMM, along with their dog, Benji. Her family is her foundation and has carried her through both the best and hardest moments this past year. To Ashley, coaching has always been about relationships, life lessons, and building a culture where athletes feel seen, valued, and empowered. The program has come full circle in her life, from player to coach, and continues to shape who she is. This past year brought an unexpected challenge with a cancer diagnosis, changing her in ways she is still processing. There were difficult days physically and mentally, but what stands out most is the overwhelming support her family received from the community, district, and team. Stepping away from the life she loved was incredibly difficult. The love, encouragement, and kindness carried her family through and served as a reminder that McKinley is not just a school, it is a family. Now back in the gym, surrounded by her team and coaches, doing what she loves has been a meaningful part of her healing. She is incredibly grateful, not just to return, but to give back to a community that showed up when it was needed most. “It means everything to be back in the district, coaching and working with the next generation of Bulldogs,” Ashley shared. She cannot wait to see everyone at the volleyball games this fall. Community Spotlight C.A.S.T.: Caring and Serving Together C.A.S.T. (Caring and Serving Together) is a student-driven volunteer network that connects young people with meaningful needs across the community. Founded in 2013 at Early College Academy, C.A.S.T. has grown into a districtwide movement that truly feels like family, now engaging more than 150 active students. Open to students across multiple schools including Early College, McKinley, Youtz, McGregor, STEAMM, St. Michael’s, and the Boys & Girls Club, C.A.S.T. empowers students to make a hands-on difference. Students who complete 50 or more service hours during high school are honored at graduation with a green C.A.S.T. cord, recognizing their commitment to service. Students volunteer with many community partners, including the Akron-Canton Food Bank, Refuge of Hope, Stark County Humane Society, Habitat ReStore, and many more. These partnerships are at the heart of C.A.S.T., and we are deeply grateful for the organizations that welcome our students, guide them, and allow them to serve in meaningful ways. Their support helps students grow in leadership, communication, critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility. C.A.S.T. also offers opportunities for deeper connection, including “CAST Aways,” a twice-monthly faith-based gathering, the EPIC spring break retreat, and a summer service trip to Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. At its core, C.A.S.T. reminds students that every act of service matters, every student has the power to create meaningful change, and strong community partnerships make that impact possible. Community Event Highlight Celebrating New Beginnings at the Pre-K and Kindergarten Fair The annual Kindergarten Fair made a joyful return this year, welcoming families across the district to a fun and informative afternoon designed especially for our youngest learners and their caregivers. Held on Monday, April 6, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Timken Career Campus, the event brought together families, school leaders, and staff to celebrate the start of the Pre-K and Kindergarten journey. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the chance for children to meet and take photos with beloved storybook characters, including Clifford the Big Red Dog, Pete the Cat, and The Cat in the Hat, creating memorable moments for families to cherish. In addition to the festivities, families had the opportunity to meet principals and staff, ask questions, and begin or complete the registration process on-site. The event served as an important first step in welcoming new students into the district community. For families still preparing, registration remains open for children entering Pre-K and Kindergarten. Children who are five years old on or before August 25, 2026, are eligible for Kindergarten. Families are encouraged to begin the registration process as soon as possible at: https://www.ccsdistrict.org/150908_3 We extend a heartfelt thank you to all staff members, volunteers, and families who attended and helped make this year’s Kindergarten Fair such a warm celebration of our newest Bulldogs. CTE Celebrates 4.5 stars with the Community Partners Who Help Make It Possible Career Technical Education (CTE) at Canton City Schools has earned an outstanding 4.5 stars on the State Report Card, an increase from 3.5 stars last year. This achievement reflects the dedication, growth, and collective commitment of our educators, students, and community partners who help make Career Technical Education a powerful pathway to success. On March 20, the CCSD Career Technical Education team hosted the 2026 Spring Advisory Meeting to celebrate this milestone and recognize the impact of strong collaboration across our district and community. We extend our deepest gratitude to our CTE teachers, administrators, and more than 100 business and community partners whose ongoing support helps shape meaningful, real-world learning experiences for students. CTE at Canton City Schools offers more than 16 diverse programs, giving students the opportunity to explore careers in fields such as healthcare, engineering, business, media, culinary arts, construction, and more. These programs are designed to meet students where their interests are and prepare them for what comes next. Students learn in state-of-the-art labs, where facilities and equipment are continually updated to reflect real-world industry standards. Through hands-on training, students gain practical experience and earn valuable credentials that prepare them for college, apprenticeships, military service, or high-demand careers. With strong community connections, work-based learning opportunities, and industry-recognized training, CCSD CTE continues to empower students to graduate with a “Diploma Plus” and a clear pathway to their future. Thank you to everyone who helps make this success possible. Our Bulldogs are truly future ready. Summer Programming Call for Summer Programming Opportunities As we begin looking at opportunities for our students during the summer months, we are working to compile a comprehensive list of summer programs and opportunities available to our students and families. We know that many of our valued community partners offer camps, enrichment activities, learning opportunities, and other programs that support student growth during the summer. If your organization is offering summer programming for school-age children, we would love to include it in our district resource list. This list will be shared with families to help them easily find opportunities that keep students engaged, learning, and connected throughout the summer. CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection, March 2...
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools March 10, 2026 Family Spotlight Meet the Larabou Family Canton City Schools is proud to celebrate the many students and families who make our district such a special place to learn and grow. The Larabou family is one of the many wonderful families whose experiences, cultures, and commitment to education enrich our school community. The Larabou family includes five students learning and growing across Canton City Schools and our community. Aishatou Larabou is a 10th-grade student at McKinley Senior High School and a member of the ALL-In Leadership Group, a program that connects students from across Stark County who are part of school social justice teams. Her brother Abdoulaye is an 8th-grade student at STEAMM Academy at Hartford, while Maryam attends Patrick Elementary as a 6th grader. Roumaissa is a 2nd-grade student at Baraka Islamic School, and the youngest, Mouhammad, attends preschool at the Early Learning Center at Schreiber. Their parents, Fatoumata Soumaila and Aboubakar Larabou, have created a home that values education, culture, and connection. Mr. Larabou works in manufacturing at East Manufacturing, and the family maintains strong ties to relatives in the Republic of Niger, where he is originally from. Aishatou’s educational journey began at the Early Learning Center at Schreiber and Harter before spending time living in Niger and Togo. During that time, she learned to speak French, which is widely spoken in Togo. At home, the Larabou children speak Zarma and English, and Aishatou has also studied Spanish in middle and high school. With roots that span continents and languages, the Larabou family reflects the rich experiences and perspectives that help make the Canton City Schools community so strong. Alumni Spotlight From Bulldog to Community Leader: Jeff Stocker Continues a Tradition of Leadership and Service Jeff Stocker, a proud 1987 graduate of McKinley Senior High School, exemplifies what it means to build leaders who serve their communities A lifelong Stark County resident, Jeff began his journey in Canton City Schools before attending Kent State University and launching his sales career, highlighted by his current 24-year tenure with the Cleveland Guardians. Today, he serves as Assistant Director of Ticket Sales, leading within the organization’s largest revenue-producing department and helping guide strategy, teamwork, and long-term planning. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jeff has dedicated more than a decade to coaching and mentoring young people through North Canton Little League and YMCA basketball, reinforcing his belief that leadership is about helping others succeed. He currently serves on North Canton City Council after being elected in November 2025, bringing the same commitment to collaboration and fiscal responsibility that has defined his career. Jeff credits his foundation to his time at Canton City Schools, where he developed the confidence, communication skills, and work ethic that continue to shape his leadership style today. “I honestly don't think I'd be the person I am today if I hadn't grown up in Canton and gone to Canton City Schools," he said. "I attended three different elementary schools before going to Crenshaw and eventually McKinley so I had a tremendous opportunity to get to know people from different parts of town. At McKinley, I was a member of the Speech and Debate Team and was fortunate to qualify for two national tournaments. I was also a Co-Editor of The Saxton. There's no doubt that my personal and educational experiences really help me today to connect with people in a genuine way." Whether in professional sports, on the ballfield, or in public service, Jeff’s story reflects the Bulldog tradition of building champions, strengthening communities, and proving that success is truly a tradition at Canton City Schools. Community Spotlight Lighthouse Ministries and Canton City Schools Partner to Support Students Beyond the Classroom Lighthouse Ministries has been walking alongside the children and families of Southeast Canton for nearly three decades, creating safe, holistic spaces where young people are known, supported, and encouraged to discover their God-given gifts. Grounded in relationships and quality programming, the Lighthouse helps students grow in confidence, creativity, and purpose during the school year and beyond. In partnership with Canton City Schools, Lighthouse supports students throughout the academic year through after-school programming and on-site partnerships, as well as our newly launched after-school location at Patrick Elementary. During the school year, students can also participate in our Youth Ministry and Cultivate arts programming, where they build meaningful relationships, explore their strengths, and develop social, emotional, and leadership skills in a caring and consistent environment. During the summer, Lighthouse offers a seven-week day camp and a field trip program, giving parents multiple ways to provide fun-filled educational and enrichment opportunities for their children. The Lighthouse is thrilled to partner with Canton City Schools to support students year-round and strengthen pathways to bright futures for students in our community. Community Event Highlight Thank You for a Wonderful Black History Month Celebration! We are beyond grateful to all the families and community members who joined us for our Annual Black History Month Celebration. Your presence truly made the evening unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to our amazing performers and outstanding student emcees who filled the stage with energy, talent, and excellence. We were especially honored to recognize our award recipients, Dr. Charles Hughes and JB Hilliard, Esq. Special thanks to the Canton City School District Board of Education, Superintendent Jeff Talbert, Program Chair Deidre Stokes-Davis, and Co-Chair Terrance Jones for your commitment and support in making this celebration such a success. It was a magical evening celebrating history, excellence, and the power of community. Special Thanks Preserving the Past, Honoring a Life While going through his late mother, Norma Reese's belongings, a Michigan man, Greg Winters, found treasured keepsakes from his mother's elementary school days at Clarendon Elementary: class photos, bulletins and composition notebooks. Rather than discard them, Mr. Winters chose to return the memorabilia to Canton City Schools so we could preserve the pieces as part of our history. He drove from Michigan to Ohio to personally deliver the collection, then returned home the same day. His thoughtful gesture is a reminder that the impact of a school lasts far beyond graduation, and that preserving those memories honors the generations who came before. Thank you, Mr. Winters, for going the extra mile (literally) to share a piece of your beloved mother's story with us. May she rest in peace, and her legacy live on. Sponsor the Bulldog Games Bulldog Games Sponsorship Opportunity The Canton City Schools Special Education Department will host the Bulldog Games on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 9:30 AM–1:30 PM at Thurman Munson Stadium. CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection; Issue #...
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools February 10, 2026 Family Spotlight The Harris Family David and Colleen Harris are the proud parents of Clayton (6), a first grader at Harter, and Truman (4), who attends preschool at the Early Learning Center. Their family has spent the past four years connected to the preschool program, which they describe as “an incredible foundation for both our boys.” For the Harrises, the support of IEP teams has been essential, providing occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech services, and guidance through changes when plans needed to shift. Like many families, navigating developmental disabilities came with a steep learning curve, and transitioning to school initially felt intimidating. “What we found instead was an expanded support system, not just for our child, but for our whole family,” Colleen shared. “Clayton has so many people working faithfully to help him thrive. I honestly can’t imagine doing this alone.” The family values collaboration with teachers, therapists, and school staff, and Colleen serves on CCSD’s inaugural Parent Advisory Group to help keep communication strong between families and administrators. This year, they’re also enjoying the preschool’s Intergenerational Program with Truman. Their advice to other families: assume the best, ask questions, and work together toward solutions that are right for your child. Alumni Spotlight Four Generations Strong: Celebrating The Hanlin Family Libby Hanlin, a 1997 McKinley graduate, has worked in the district for the past 12 years. Her family is truly a Canton City Schools family. She married her high school sweetheart, Brandon (’97), and is not only an alumna and employee, but also a proud CCSD parent. Her children, Sebastian (ECHS ’20, mechanical engineer), Julian (ECHS ’22, Firefighter/EMT certifications, three associate degrees), and Violet (ECHS ’28, dual athlete) are fourth-generation CCSD students. Libby’s mom, Debbie Bunting (Blackledge), is a proud 1970 Lincoln graduate, and her grandmother, Olga Blackledge (Marshalek), is a 1943 Timken graduate. Libby attended Harter Elementary and Souers Junior High, where she was shaped by band directors, teachers, and volleyball coaches throughout her CCSD academic career—and where she also met her lifelong best friend. She began her career with CCSD as a child nutrition substitute, then served as a preschool assistant, worked in Special Education, and ultimately landed what she considers the best job in the district: secretary at Cedar. Prior to working in the district, she volunteered in her children’s classrooms at Harter and The Arts Academy. If you know Libby, you know she is a passionate CCSD advocate. She believes in being actively involved in her children’s education, participating in parent-teacher conferences, volunteering, seeking out programs and activities, encouraging athletics, and ensuring her children grow as learners through participation in the district’s band and orchestra programs. Community Spotlight United by Love in the Month of February Canton City Schools is proud to highlight the Wags on Wheels program, an initiative that supports seniors receiving home-delivered meals by providing free pet food. By easing the financial burden of caring for pets, Wags on Wheels helps seniors maintain the health, companionship, and comfort their pets provide, keeping beloved animals in their homes where they belong. Traditionally recognized during McKinley/Massillon week, in 2026 we're choosing collaboration over competition. Canton City Schools and Massillon City Schools are partnering together to spread the love and support a program that reflects compassion, service, and community care. Wags on Wheels is made possible through local donations and community support, ensuring both seniors and their pets continue to receive the care they need. We are grateful to shine a light on this meaningful initiative and the positive impact it has across our communities. Community Event Highlight Seussical Jr. Hits the Stage! The Middle School All-City Band proudly introduced Seussical Jr., a vibrant, high-energy musical that brought the beloved characters of Dr. Seuss to life. From Horton and the Whos to the Cat in the Hat, the performance highlighted the incredible talent, teamwork, and creativity of our middle school musicians and performers. Seussical Jr. celebrated imagination, music, and storytelling, leaving audiences smiling and inspired. Upcoming Events Celebrating Black History Month You're Invited! FCP Connection January Newsletter
CCSD Family, Community & Partner Connection Canton City Schools January 12, 2026 From all of us at the Canton City School District: The Family, Community, and Partner Connection is designed to celebrate the people who shape our schools, strengthen our community, and leave a lasting impact on our students. Each month, we hope to highlight a community partner, an alumnus, and a district family. This month, we are honored to dedicate this issue to one extraordinary individual who embodied all of those roles and so much more. Mayor Tom Bernabei was a proud graduate of the Canton City School District, a devoted family man, a tireless advocate for public education, and a lifelong champion of the City of Canton. His belief in our students, his unwavering support of our schools, and his commitment to service left an indelible mark on our district and our community. He did not simply support Canton City Schools in word, but in action, standing beside our leaders, our staff, and our students at every opportunity. This dedication is shared with deep gratitude and respect. We honor Mayor Bernabei’s legacy, his service, and his belief in the promise of Canton City Schools. His impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. Mayor Tom Bernabei: A Legacy of Service and Commitment Former Canton Mayor Thomas Bernabei dedicated more than five decades of his life to faithfully serving the City of Canton and Stark County, the community he proudly called home. A lifelong Stark County resident and a 1964 graduate of Lehman High School, Tom went on to graduate from Brown University in 1968. Mayor Bernabei first answered the call to serve his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of Captain. Following his military service, he earned his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law in 1975, graduating at the top of his class. He went on to serve the community in numerous leadership roles, including Assistant Prosecutor, Canton Assistant Law Director and Law Director, Stark County Commissioner, and Interim Director of the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority. In 2015, he was elected Mayor of Canton, a position he held for two terms. Congresswoman Emilia Sykes captured his legacy best when she said, “In every role, he brought fairness, humility, and a true commitment to helping his community.” Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mayor Bernabei was an avid fan of the Cleveland Guardians and The Ohio State Buckeyes, and he loved spending time with his beloved dog, Rosie. Among all of his achievements, he considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment. He supported them in all of their endeavors and consistently prioritized family time. Mayor Bernabei was both a proud graduate and a strong advocate of the Canton City School District. He worked collaboratively with district superintendents to promote Canton City Schools and partnered with his daughter, Kimberly Kingsbury, CCSD Executive Director of Accountability and Federal Programs, to create opportunities for Canton City students to gain meaningful work experience with the City of Canton. He was a passionate supporter of the McKinley Bulldogs, especially during Rivalry Week, starting the annual Mayor’s Beat Massillon Parade and Pep Rally downtown. One of his most memorable moments came when he appeared in full football gear at the McKinley/Massillon Breakfast, delivering a motivational speech that ended with the words, “Put me in, coach!” Mayor Bernabei believed deeply in the potential of the Canton City School District and demonstrated that belief by chairing the CCSD Levy Campaign in 2004. His leadership helped secure the passage of the levy, resulting in the construction of new school buildings and providing long-term financial stability for the district. His contributions continue to have a lasting and meaningful impact on Canton City Schools. Mayor Tom Bernabei passed away on December 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, integrity, and compassion. He made the City of Canton stronger, including the Canton City School District. Our district will forever be grateful for his leadership, his advocacy, and his unwavering belief in our students.
