    Hello Central 301 Community, Over the past two months, we have included a summary of our regular Board of Education meetings in the Community Connections   m onthly newsletter. Moving forward, we will continue to do this and begin sharing these updates as standalone summaries, with the goal of providing our community with timely, transparent, and easy-to-understand information about the work of the district, Board, and its committees. Below is our first standalone summary, highlighting the August 26 Facility Committee meeting and the next steps in our long-range Master Planning work, including a Facility Committee meeting on September 2nd at 5:00 PM at District Office that is open to the public.  The agenda for this is included below.   • Central Connections: Community Edition - August 2026

    August 20, 2026 A Message From the Superintendent What an incredible start to the school year! Our classrooms and hallways are once again filled with the energy, curiosity, and laughter of our students. From our youngest learners beginning their school journeys to our seniors experiencing their final first day, there is a renewed sense of excitement and possibility throughout Central 301. The beginning of a new year also brings new opportunities for students. On August 25, Central High School’s inaugural girls flag football team will take the field for the first time at Rocket Hill at 4:30 with JV beginning at 4:30 p.m. and Varsity at 5:45 p.m.. These student-athletes are not only beginning a new season...they are making Central 301 history! We cannot wait to celebrate this milestone and cheer you on! While the school year is just beginning, we are also thinking about the future of Central 301. As our district continues to grow, we must work together to consider how our schools, facilities, and learning environments can best serve students for generations to come. A series of Let’s Connect: Shaping Central 301 sessions will provide opportunities to share information, ask questions, and engage in meaningful conversation with our community, the board of education, and administration about the future of our district. A separate invitation with session dates and additional information will be sent soon. Your perspectives will be essential as we consider what comes next for Central 301. Our students’ perspectives are equally important. This year, we are launching the Superintendent’s Student Leadership Team, which will bring students together to share their experiences, ideas, and hopes for our schools. Their voices will help district leaders better understand the student experience and ensure students have a meaningful role in conversations and decisions that shape their education. Dr. Amy MacCrindle Superintendent News & Highlights Back to the Hill The Central 301 community came together once again for Back to the Hill, helping kick off the new school year while supporting our students. Thanks to the generosity of our families, staff, vendors, sponsors, and community partners! A HUGE thank you to our Central 301 Education Foundation who helped make the event another great example of what makes our Central 301 community special. CHS Earns U.S. News Best HS Ranking Central High School has been recognized as a 2026–2027 U.S. News Best High School, placing CHS among the top 15% of public high schools nationally evaluated by U.S. News & World Report (Ranked 2,743 out of 17,945) and the top 11% in the State of Illinois (Ranked 112 out of 984). You can read more about our ratings here. Congratulations to our students and staff on this recognition! Announcements & Reminders Attendance Matters Being at school each day helps students stay connected to their teachers, classmates, and learning. If your child will be absent, please notify the school and provide the reason for the absence. Families can find reporting procedures, attendance expectations, excused absence guidelines, and information about tardiness and make-up work in the Attendance and Truancy section of the Student & Parent / Guardian Handbook. Thank you for partnering with us to support consistent attendance and student success.    Fall Assessments K–5 Fall Assessments: In the coming weeks, students will complete reading and math screenings using FastBridge (K–1 reading), i-Ready (K–5 math), and MAP (2–5 reading). Results help teachers identify strengths, monitor growth, and plan appropriate instruction, intervention, and enrichment. Teachers will share results with families as appropriate; questions may be directed to your child’s teacher. K–12 Satchel Pulse: From September 21–October 2, Central 301 will use Satchel Pulse to measure student development related to Illinois Social and Emotional Learning Standards and CASEL competencies. Teachers will complete the survey for students in grades K–12, and students in grades 3–12 will complete a self-assessment. Results help educators understand student needs and adjust support accordingly.   Elementary Report Cards As we partner with you to support your child’s learning, we want to share an update about how we will communicate academic progress this year. Beginning this school year, Grades 3–5 will transition to a fully standards-aligned report card, and traditional letter grades will no longer be used. Instead, students will receive a 1–2–3 rating for each learning standard to communicate their progress toward grade-level expectations. As a reminder, the ratings are defined as follows: 3 – Meeting Grade-Level Standards: The student consistently demonstrates the knowledge and skills expected at their grade level. 2 – Approaching Grade-Level Standards: The student is developing and approaching the expected level of performance. 1 – Minimal Understanding of Grade-Level Standards: The student demonstrates limited understanding of the knowledge and skills expected at their grade level. It is important to note that these ratings are not equivalent to traditional letter grades. Rather, they provide a more specific picture of a student’s progress toward individual grade-level standards. For example, a rating of 2 does not mean a student is “earning a C.” It indicates that the student is continuing to develop the knowledge and skills needed to consistently meet the grade-level standard. This approach allows families to better understand what their child knows and can do, where they are making progress, and where additional support or continued growth may be needed. This year’s transition to a fully standards-aligned report card builds on last year’s use of both letter grades and performance ratings and provides a more consistent approach to communicating student learning across Grades K–5. Please reach out to Kim Paulus, Director of Elementary Curriculum with any questions.   Stay Connected Through Canvas Parents and guardians can become observers in their students’ Canvas courses, providing a helpful way to view course information, assignments, announcements, and upcoming due dates. To get started, obtain a pairing code from your student and follow the Canvas Parent Observer instructions.   Transportation Bus Times Returning to Normal As we settle into the school year, morning arrival and afternoon drop-off times should become increasingly consistent. Our Transportation Department continues to make adjustments, and we appreciate the patience and flexibility of our students and families as everyone gets back into the school-year routine. Late Academic Bus Begins September 1 Beginning Tuesday, September 1, Central 301 will provide a Late Academic Bus for students at Prairie Knolls Middle School, Central Middle School, and Central High School. Students must sign up by noon the day before they need transportation and will be dropped off at their regular bus stop. Additional information and the sign-up form are available on the Transportation section of the district website. Annual Fall Bus Evacuation Drills Weather permitting, Central 301 will conduct its annual fall bus evacuation drills during morning arrival the week of September 14. Drivers will review important safety procedures, and students will practice exiting through the rear of the bus. These annual drills help prepare students to respond safely in the event of an emergency. Questions or transportation updates can be sent to Transportation@central301.net   A Safe and Simple Visitor Check-In Process Central 301 is committed to providing a safe, welcoming environment for all students, staff, and visitors. Our schools use Raptor, a trusted safety platform used on more than 60,000 campuses nationwide, to screen visitors quickly and consistently while keeping the check-in process simple and respectful. How Does Raptor Work? When a visitor arrives, Raptor verifies the visitor’s identity, screens the individual against the national registered sex offender database, and prints a visitor badge once the person is cleared to enter. When an ID is scanned, the system reads only three pieces of information: the visitor’s name, date of birth, and photo. Raptor does not check criminal history, traffic records, immigration status, outstanding warrants, or other databases, and law enforcement is not automatically notified. If the system identifies a potential match, school administration is notified privately and follows established procedures. Protecting visitor information is a priority. Raptor retains only the information needed for the visitor-management process and follows industry practices designed to keep data secure. What Should I Do When Visiting a School? Please bring a government-issued photo ID and follow these steps: Check in at the visitor-management tablet. Follow the prompts and select the reason for your visit. Scan your ID when prompted. Receive your printed badge from the office staff and wear it in a visible location throughout your visit. Make Check-In Even Faster Visitors may download the RaptorSafe app and create a Raptor Passport for faster future check-ins: Download from the Apple App Store Download from Google Play After setting up a profile and scanning an ID in the app, visitors receive a QR code that can be scanned at the school kiosk instead of scanning a physical ID during each visit.   Breakfast & Lunch Menus Breakfast and lunch menus are available on the Central 301 website, making it easy for families to see what’s on the menu throughout the school year. Food Services has also updated the website with current à la carte pricing, so families and students can see the cost of additional items available for purchase. Prices are subject to change. Visit the Food Services section of our website to view menus, meal information and the latest à la carte prices. Inside Central 301 How Do We Prepare for School Emergencies? As the school year begins, students and staff across Central 301 practice the safety drills that help our schools prepare for unexpected situations. These drills are conducted throughout the year so everyone knows what to do and can respond calmly and confidently. Here’s a closer look at how we prepare: Safety Plans: Each school maintains emergency procedures designed for its building, students, and staff. Practice and Preparation: Students and staff participate in required evacuation, severe weather, bus evacuation, and law-enforcement drills. Age-Appropriate Guidance: Staff explain drills in ways that help students feel informed and prepared without creating unnecessary fear. Community Partnerships: Central 301 works closely with local police, fire departments, emergency responders, and other public safety partners across the communities we serve. Building and System Readiness: Teams regularly review building access, safety equipment, communication systems, and emergency supplies. Family Communication: When an incident affects a school, the District shares verified information with families as quickly and clearly as possible. Student Support: Counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other staff are available when students need additional reassurance or assistance. Continuous Improvement: Following drills and emergency situations, district and school teams reflect on what worked and identify opportunities to strengthen our response. Families can support this work by keeping their contact information current, reviewing District messages, and talking with their children about the importance of following staff directions during a drill or emergency. Learn more about this here. While we hope emergency procedures are never needed, preparation matters. Through regular practice, strong community partnerships, and ongoing review, Central 301 works to keep our schools safe, supportive, and ready to respond.   Board of Education Meeting The Board of Education met on August 17 to conduct regular district business and continue planning for the 2026–27 school year and beyond. Along with taking action on routine business items, the Board recognized students, reviewed district finances, approved new student opportunities, and received updates about Central 301’s facilities studies. At a Glance Recognized Central High School students who participated in summer internships and celebrated the district’s partnerships with the Northern Kane County Regional Vocational System and the Alliance Collaborative for Education, which help provide meaningful career-connected learning experiences. Heard the Superintendent’s Report highlighting the first few days of the school year, the upcoming launch of the Superintendent’s Student Leadership Team, and plans for a series of Let’s Connect: Shaping Central 301 community engagement sessions. Dates and additional information about these opportunities will be shared soon. Approved the venue for the 2028 Central High School Prom at Contract 810 Entertainment and an overnight trip for Softball. Approved the final FY27 budget for the Northern Kane County Regional Vocational System. Approved the Central 301 Tentative Budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Approved partnerships with area animal clinics that will provide externship opportunities for students pursuing their Veterinary Assistant Certification. Approved revisions to Board Policy 7:40—Nonpublic School Students. The updates revised deadlines for part-time attendance requests, expanded extracurricular participation opportunities for nonpublic school students, and changed the enrollment requirement from one-half of the regular school day to at least one district class. Received a Facility Master Plan update from STR Partners and a Facility Needs Assessment and Health/Life Safety Survey Plan update from WOLD Architects and Engineers. Finalized Board member committee assignments for the 2026–27 school year. Approved routine business items, including personnel recommendations, financial reports, and bills, and reviewed the district’s monthly FOIA report. Upcoming Facilities Committee Meetings The Board of Education’s Facilities Committee will meet at the District Office on: Wednesday, August 26, at 4:00 p.m. to discuss the district’s Facility Needs Assessment with WOLD Architects and Engineers. Wednesday, September 2, at 5:00 p.m. to participate in a question-and-answer session with Dr. Kasarda and STR Partners about the district’s demographic study. The next regular Board of Education meeting is Monday, September 21. Community members are encouraged to visit the Board of Education page of the district website to view meeting agendas, supporting documents, recordings, and approved minutes when available.     July 30, 2026 A Message From the Superintendent Welcome to the very first edition of Central Connections: Community Edition! Welcome to a new school year! Whether your family is sending a child to school for the very first time, celebrating a senior year, or somewhere in between, we are excited to begin another year of learning, growth, and opportunity together. As your Superintendent, one of my first priorities has been listening. Over the past several months, I've had the opportunity to meet with students, staff, families, and community members, and one thing has become abundantly clear: Central 301 is a community that deeply cares about its children, and I am honored to be part of it. Central Connections was created to help keep you informed and connected throughout the year. On the 3rd Thursday of each month, you'll find district updates, upcoming events, celebrations, and stories that highlight the incredible students, dedicated staff, and supportive families who make Central 301 such an exceptional place to learn and grow. My hope is that this newsletter not only keeps you informed but also gives you a glimpse into the meaningful work happening in our schools every day. From engineering cutting-edge AI tools to achieving a phenomenal 100% pass rate on drone pilot licensing, these trailblazers are proving that summer internships are life-changing opportunities that set career plans in motion.  Thank you to our Central 301 staff for empowering our students to seize nearly 20% of every paid regional internship opportunity available! Rocket Hill Stadium Track Improvement Construction continues to make steady progress on the CHS track and Rocket Hill stadium improvements, with the new track surface is almost in place and major site work taking shape around the facility. Crews are completing the surrounding infrastructure and finishing touches as the project moves closer to the finish line, bringing athletes and the community one step closer to enjoying the upgraded track during classes, practices, and competitions.   Get Ready for DayOne301 As families prepare for another exciting school year, Central 301 is making it easier than ever to find the information you need. Thank you for your patience and understanding. #DayOne301 - Back to School Page  Meet Our New Leaders Central 301 is proud to welcome Dr. Amy MacCrindle, Stephanie Henkel and Tim Shermak to our administrative team, while congratulating Rick Rindhage on his promotion to Director of Transportation after nearly a decade of service to the district. We look forward to the leadership each will bring to our students, staff and families. Dr. Amy MacCrindle, Superintendent Dr. Amy MacCrindle begins her tenure as Central 301's superintendent after serving most recently as Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Innovation in Huntley Community School District 158. She looks forward to continuing to partner with students, staff, families and the community as Central 301 continues building on its strengths and preparing every learner for the future. Rick Rindhage, Director of Transportation After nearly a decade of dedicated service to Central 301, Rick Rindhage has been promoted to Director of Transportation. Since joining the district in 2017, Rick has played an important role in supporting the safe and reliable transportation of thousands of students each day. Rick will lead the department's continued commitment to safety, efficiency and outstanding service for students, families and staff. Stephanie Henkel, Assistant Principal, Prairie Knolls Middle School Stephanie Henkel joins Prairie Knolls Middle School as assistant principal, bringing four years of elementary administrative experience and 15 years in the classroom as a high school science teacher. She is passionate about building positive relationships, supporting students and staff, and fostering a school culture where everyone feels valued, connected and empowered to succeed. Tim Shermak, Assistant Principal, Prairie View Grade School Tim Shermak joins Prairie View Grade School as assistant principal, bringing a diverse background in education that includes experience as a third grade teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal and principal. He is committed to supporting student achievement, collaborating with staff and helping create a positive learning environment for every child.   Back to the Hill The 301 Central Education Foundation is bringing our community together for Back to the Hill on Saturday, August 15! Join us at Central High School from 3:00–7:00 p.m. for an afternoon of food, activities and fun for the whole family. From carnival rides and food trucks to local vendors and a chance to meet the Central Rockets, there's something for everyone as we get ready for another school year. We hope to see you back on the Hill! 🚀   Announcements & Reminders Registration Our first day of school is quickly approaching and we want all students to be ready! If you haven't already done so, complete your online registration as soon as possible. Students are unable to attend school without a completed online registration. Log in to your Skyward Family Access account and you’ll see what needs your attention. Please note - ALL students need to have this completed, whether they are new to the District or a returning student. New families will have completed a different online form through our New Student Enrollment portal, but this is completely separate and still required. School fees can be paid through our RevTrak Web Store directly.   Student Handbook Our Student & Parent/Guardian Handbook serves as a helpful resource for students and families throughout the school year. It includes important information about district policies, school expectations, safety procedures, student conduct, attendance, and the many resources that support student success. We encourage every family to review it together before the school year begins and bookmark it for future reference. Health Requirements Due Before the First Day of School Families of students with outstanding health requirements have received an email outlining the items that are still needed. If you received one of these notifications, please submit the required information as soon as possible to ensure your child is ready to start the school year. Students who have not submitted and received approval for all required health documentation will NOT be permitted to begin school on the first day. Families can login to Skyward Family Access to check their student's compliance status in the Health tile. Required forms and additional information are available on our Health Information webpage. If you have questions, please contact your child's school office as soon as possible.   Transportation The first day of school is almost here! Bus route information, including bus numbers, pickup locations, and pickup/drop-off times, will be available in Skyward Family Access beginning Saturday, August 8. Families can access this information by selecting the Transportation Bus button within Skyward. Please remember that buses may run behind schedule during the first week of school as students learn new routines and drivers settle into their routes. Kindergarten Families: We know riding the bus for the first time is a big milestone! To help ensure a safe and smooth start, kindergarten students are loaded onto buses before students in grades 1–5, giving staff and drivers extra time to help each child find the correct bus. Drivers also verify students as they board and exit the bus using the green transportation tag attached to their backpack. Families of kindergarten students should plan to meet their child at the afternoon bus stop unless an older sibling is riding the same bus. If no adult is present, Transportation will attempt to contact the family before returning the student safely to school. Late Activity & Academic Bus: Late Activity & Academic Bus service begins Tuesday, September 1, providing eligible students with transportation home after participating in after-school activities, clubs, and academic support. Families can view routes, schedules, and eligibility information below. Questions or transportation updates can be sent to Transportation@central301.net Technology Update As we prepare for the new school year, Central 301 is implementing updates to student device use in alignment with recently signed Public Act 104-0657. The student Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) network has been discontinued, and students will use their district-issued devices for learning while at school. Families of students who require a personal device for medical needs or as part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will continue to work with Student Services to ensure appropriate accommodations are in place. To help create focused learning environments, teachers will also be using Securly Classroom, a tool that allows them to guide utilization of district-issued student devices during instructional time.   Food Service School lunches will be available beginning on the first day of school! Families can add money to their child's meal account online through MySchoolBucks, and the optional OnePay discounted fee program is also available. Children with Food Allergies: For children with food allergies or othe rmedical conditions that requires meal accommodations, please submit a completed Physician’s Statement to the district before the start of school so we can safely meet your child's needs. Free or Reduced-price Meals: If your family qualifies for free or reduced-price meals, we encourage you to complete an application through MySchoolApps.com. School lunch menus, meal information, and additional Food Service resources are available on the Central 301 website.   Be a Canvas Observer Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) used in Central 301. It connects digital tools and resources for teachers and students and is available in grades K-12. Canvas Courses are established for each subject or class. Courses can contain informational pages, discussions, assignments and quizzes.  Parents can become observers of their students' Canvas courses by obtaining the pairing code from their student. Inside Central 301 What Happens During the Summer? While students leave for summer break, our schools are anything but quiet! In reality, summer is one of the busiest seasons of the year behind the scenes. Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening across Central 301: Summer Learning: Some students continue learning through summer school, credit recovery, and “get ahead” courses that provide flexibility and expand opportunities for the upcoming year.  Athletics & Activities: Students and staff stay engaged through camps, practices, rehearsals, conditioning, and leadership opportunities that prepare them for the year ahead. Teaching & Learning: Teams review curriculum, modify units, and prepare professional learning for staff. School Leaders: Analyze data, finalize schedules, prepare student supports, and welcome new staff. Operations & Maintenance: Completes construction projects, repairs buildings, deep cleans classrooms, and prepares every school for opening day. Technology: Updates devices, installs new equipment, and prepares systems for the upcoming school year. Human Resources: Recruits, hires, and onboards new staff members. Business Services: Closes one fiscal year while preparing the budget and financial systems for the next. Transportation: Develops bus routes and coordinates with families to ensure students are ready on the first day. While summer may look quiet from the outside, so much is happening behind the scenes to ensure every student walks into a school that is safe, welcoming, and ready for learning. At a Glance Superintendent's Report highlighted summer student internship experiences, initial reflections from Let's Connect sessions with students, staff and the community, and preparations for welcoming students and staff back to school. Approved routine business items, including personnel recommendations, financial reports, bills, and annual organizational items. Approved the tentative FY27 Northern Kane County Regional Vocational System budget. A budget hearing and formal approval will occur at the August 17th Board of Education Meeting. Approved Central High School club offerings for the 26-27 school year. Learned about the current policy 7:40 regarding participation opportunities for homeschooled and part-time students in IHSA activities. Recommendations of changes to this policy will be brought back to the August 17th Board of Education Meeting. Reviewed the district's facilities and demographic study, including the project timeline and planned opportunities for continued community engagement as planning progresses by the Central 301 team. The STR Architect team will be joining the August 17th Board of Education Meeting. for a more in depth update and discussion. Learned about a 25 cent increase in the MySchoolBucks transaction fees for digitally adding funds to the account. Discussed the current board committee structure with recommendations to be brought back to the August 17th Board of Education meeting. Reviewed the monthly FOIA report and discussed upcoming agenda items for the August 17th Board of Education Meeting. The next regular Board of Education meeting is Monday, August 17.
