Monthly Family Newsletter - October 2, 2025Monthly Family Newsletter October 2, 2025 A Message from the Superintendent Dear Englewood Families, We have a new tradition in Englewood where Englewood High School brings the Homecoming Parade to our schools. On Friday, the band, cheer team, and our athletes will visit ECE at Maddox, the four elementary schools, and EMS to help them experience what it is like to feel the school pride of the Englewood Pirates! It has been a fun week for our high school students, and I hope to see you all at the Homecoming Football Game on Friday, October 3. Believe it or not, we have been in school for almost two months, which means the end of the first quarter and conferences. Conferences will be held on October 14 and 15, Districtwide (please check your school’s calendar for exact times). Partnering with your student’s teachers is important for academic achievement and growth. You will find that our teachers truly know your children, and they have invested in their growth as both learners and as people. In my time in Englewood, I have noticed how deeply our parent community cares about their children’s education. Conferences are a time to foster two-way conversations with teachers to understand your child’s progress and ensure we are meeting your students’ needs.  I also want to share with you that the Board of Education is holding Listening Sessions to shape the policy for limiting student use of Personal Technology Devices (including cell phones) during the school day. This is a requirement of the Board due to the passing of HB25-1135. Please see below for more details on when the Listening Sessions will be held. If you are unable to make a Listening Session, please give the Board your input by completing this survey. Enjoy the school spirit of Homecoming and conferences with your child’s teachers! In Partnership, Joanna District News and Department Updates Our Cell Phone Policy is Being Updated! We want to inform you about a new state law; House Bill 1135 (HB-1135), which requires all school boards to update their Personal Technology Device policy. The goal of HB-1135 is to reduce classroom distractions, promote a positive learning environment, and improve student mental well-being. Why This is Necessary Current research shows that cell phone use during school can negatively impact academic performance and well-being. For instance, 97% of students use their phones during the school day, with an average usage time of 43 minutes. Additionally, excessive social media use has been linked to increased anxiety and depression. Review the Englewood Schools Board of Education Research Packet. Our Plan The Englewood Schools Board of Education is seeking input from various stakeholders to update its existing policy, which must be in place by July 1, 2026. The Board will hold listening sessions in October to gather feedback from students, families, and staff. Your Input Your input is valuable, and we encourage you to participate in: Personal Technology Device (PTD) Survey (scan QR code above). October 7: Public comment at the Regular Board Meeting at 6:00 p.m. Please complete this form by noon on the day of the meeting. October 21: Listening Session for Parents/Guardians of Englewood students at 5:00 p.m., before the Board of Education Work Session, located at ECE at Maddox - 3838 S. Huron St. October 24: Listening Session for the Englewood High School Student Leadership Class.  October 24: Listening Session for Colorado's Finest High School of Choice Students (11:25 - 12:25 p.m.)  Learning Services Family–Teacher Conferences: October 14 & 15 Mark your calendars! Our first Family–Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15. These conferences are a valuable opportunity for families, students, and teachers to connect, celebrate strengths, and set goals together. We believe that strong family partnerships are essential for student success, and these conversations are designed to support and empower every learner. We look forward to seeing you there and working together to support your child’s growth! Secondary Success Colorado FREE Application Days! Transportation National School Bus Safety Week October 20 - 24! The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is urging drivers to slow down and be aware of school buses in their communities. 🚸 School Bus Safety Reminder 🚌 School buses are one of the safest ways for students to get to and from school, and we can keep them that way with a little extra care on the road. ✅ Slow down and stay alert in school zones and near bus stops. ✅ Stop for the stop-arm—it’s the law and protects students getting on and off the bus. Together, we can make every ride to school a safe one! Good News Stories PATHS (Purposeful Actions Targeting Habits of Success) Events in Englewood A big thank you to everyone who supported the Touch-a-Truck event at our Early Childhood Education (ECE) Center. This event provided our youngest learners with direct exposure to the diverse range of jobs that comprise our community. Watching our children engage with the vehicles and the professionals who operate them was a powerful reminder of the importance of community partnerships. This practical exploration mirrors the essential work happening in the ECE classrooms, where educators are establishing the expectations, routines, and foundational relationships necessary for a positive learning environment. Planning Post-Graduation Success at Finest Meanwhile, older students are zeroing in on their next steps. Colorado’s Finest hosted a successful Fall Future Fair to kick off their academic year. The event brought together over 150 students with representatives from 15 different colleges and military organizations. We appreciate the hard work of Kat Roybal in organizing this important and beneficial event, which directly supports our students' post-graduation planning. From exploring fire engines to planning future pathways, these events showcase the commitment of Englewood Schools to developing every student's potential from their very first day through graduation.   🎉 Field Day Fun at Cherrelyn and Clayton!☀️ Cherrelyn and Clayton students and staff had an amazing time celebrating Field Day with games, teamwork, and lots of smiles. 🏃♂️🎈 From relay races to friendly competition, it was the perfect way to wrap up the season with joy and school spirit. 📸 Check out just a few of the highlights from a day full of laughter, energy, and community! Research also shows that beginning at age 10, rates of loneliness increase relatively quickly through age 19. Unfortunately, lonelines is also linked with increases in depression and anxiety. There are a host of reasons why this issue has increased over the last couple of decades– from technology and social media, to social and economic shifts. So let’s focus on how we heal. Healing from social isolation at a community level requires us to address both individual and environmental needs. Chat with your family, friends, and school communities about which of these strategies resonate with you, and other ideas you would add: Build a "culture of connection” by encouraging and modeling small acts of connection, which can break down big barriers to social interaction (saying hello, eye contact, quick, friendly conversations, etc).  Volunteer! Helping a common cause can give people a sense of purpose while also allowing them to meet others. The District and each of our schools have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved! District Accountability Committee School Accountability Committees and PTO’s School-community events Supporting the school directly, like volunteering your time or obtaining donations Board of Education events Participate in local clubs and groups based on shared interests (book clubs, hiking groups, art classes, gaming leagues, etc).  Improve your own and others’ access to mental health services.  For youth: School counselors are your partners in helping your child thrive. Additionally, I Matter connects youth 18 and younger (and 21 and younger for students with IEPs) with a therapist for up to 6 free counseling sessions (no insurance, credit card, or legal status information required). For adults: The OwnPath Care Directory helps connect people to affordable mental health, substance use, and crisis care. Address economic and social inequities. Factors like income, lack of transportation, and discrimination can be barriers to social connection, so let’s ensure that our efforts are inclusive and address the needs of ALL members of our beautifully diverse community. Monthly Family Newsletter - September 4, 2025Monthly Family Newsletter September 4, 2025 A Message from the Superintendent - Preparation. Consistency. Team. Dear Englewood Families, In order to achieve our goal of being a Performance level district, with all of our schools reaching the designation of Performance from the Colorado Department of Education by 2028, we need preparation, consistency, and our team. As a family who has chosen Englewood Schools, you are an important part of the team.  You ensure your child is prepared to come to school to learn. You review homework, read newsletters, and attend school events, such as conferences, all in the service of ensuring your child is well-prepared. You create consistency through routines at home. From checking in to see how your child’s day was to reading books at night and ensuring your child’s backpack is ready for the morning, you create consistency through routines. And then we have the team. We are fortunate to have a positive team culture in Englewood Schools, which is made up of families that support and partner with our educators to ensure student success. From inside the classroom to outside the school, we all must work together through preparation, consistency, and as a team to lift up our students.  I shared with the Englewood Schools’ staff that 18 minutes a day equals just over 100 hours a year. Creating a consistent routine with your children, just 18 minutes a day, will add up to 100 hours a year, which can positively impact future success in school.  Thank you for being part of our team that enjoys working with your child every day!  In Partnership, Joanna District News and Department Updates Get ready to show your Pirate Pride! For more information, please refer to the flyer.     Opportunity, Access and Inclusion (OAI) Inclusive Excellence We often navigate our social world by "getting to know" people—learning their names, their jobs, their hobbies. But the true alchemy of human connection begins when we move beyond surface-level exchanges toward deeper connections where we are "getting to trust" people. This is the shift from a transactional understanding of a person to a relational one. It's in the vulnerability of shared stories, the reliability of a promised favor, and the comfort of compassionate nonverbal cues that trust is built brick by brick. When we extend and receive this trust, we create a space where authenticity is not just allowed but celebrated. This transition from knowing to trusting is what transforms a collection of individuals into a genuine community, fostering a profound sense of belonging where we feel seen, valued, and secure in our shared humanity. Stephen Covey defines trust as "confidence in another's character and competence", but how do we get there? Zaretta Hammond and Aliza Maynard offer us this image of the Culture Tree to convey different aspects of our culture, from surface culture (observable patterns like our cuisine, clothing, holidays, arts, etc) to shallow culture (unspoken rules like group values and patterns of nonverbal communication), to deep culture (beliefs and norms like our world views and core beliefs). The Culture Tree also describes how each of these levels of culture corresponds with levels of emotional trust: low, high, and intense, respectively.  When we connect with a person over surface culture, we start to build a relationship with them, and we can deepen that relationship when we deepen our curiosity. Here’s a simplified example of how a conversation might progress based on this:  Surface: Cool Broncos hat! Is that your favorite football team?  Yes! I love the Broncos! Shallow: What is it about the Broncos that makes you want to root for them? My whole family loves them. I started watching games when I was a kid. Deep: That’s really cool! Does that speak to any core beliefs that you have? I’ve never thought about how a football team connects to my beliefs… I guess it speaks to how important family time is for me. When we all get together to watch the Broncos, I feel energized and also at peace. Loyalty is also important to me. I grew up liking the Broncos, and I’ll keep rooting for them, even if they have a bad season or two. What opportunities to connect are you building into your day, and how might you be even more intentional in watering your seeds of connection so they grow into trees of trust? To view our menus, follow this link. Safety & Security Staff & Student Safety: Our Top Priority At Englewood Schools, the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. One of the most important ways we maintain a safe learning environment is through our districtwide use of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) — a nationally recognized system developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation. The SRP was created after the tragic events at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado. It provides a uniform, planned, and practiced response to any incident, including severe weather, fires, accidents, intruders, or other threats to safety. This system is used by most school districts across Colorado and is designed to be action-based, flexible, and easy to understand. All Englewood Schools staff are trained in the SRP protocols. In addition, you’ll find SRP posters in every classroom and learning space that clearly explain each action, helping ensure everyone in our buildings knows what to do in any emergency situation. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the SRP and to help reinforce the language with your students throughout the year. Please visit our Safety & Security webpage for additional information. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to school safety and for helping make Englewood Schools a safe and supportive place for everyone. Englewood Schools Safety and Security Mark Edson - Director of Safety and Security 303-806-2339 Mark_Edson@engschools.net Transportation 🚌 Back-to-School Bus Safety - Reminders for Parents As the new school year begins, please help keep our students safe by following these important school bus safety guidelines: Know the Bus Signals: Flashing Yellow Lights mean the bus is preparing to stop—slow down and be ready to stop. Flashing Red Lights and Extended Stop Arm mean the bus has stopped to load or unload children. All drivers must stop, regardless of which direction they’re traveling. Remain stopped until the red lights turn off, the stop arm goes in, and the bus moves again. Key Reminders: Always watch for children crossing the road near a stopped bus. On two-lane roads or four-lane roads without a median, traffic in both directions must stop. Why It Matters: Safety first—children may be crossing unpredictably. It’s the law—ignoring bus signals can lead to serious legal consequences. Thank you for keeping our students safe on their journey to and from school! Community   Opportunity, Access and Inclusion (OAI) Inclusive Excellence The buzz of starting a new school year always fills my heart up with joy. There is the excitement of seeing friends we missed over the summer, the predictable structure of school days (even though waking up early can be less than ideal for some of us), and the promise of a new year with bright possibilities. George Washington Carver said “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” I foresee a golden year ahead for us all! Read below to learn about inclusion and representation for people with disabilities. On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, helping ensure that people with disabilities have equal access and opportunities. Now, during July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month. While July was an excellent time to recognize the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of people with disabilities, this recognition, of course, spans far beyond a single month, so consider ways that you might have family conversations about respecting ability-based diversity around the world and in the United States. Here are a few options: Talk about how 52 million Americans live with a disability, reflecting over 20% of the U.S. population (CDC). Consider actionable ideas for individuals and organizations to foster greater inclusivity.  Read and discuss the “Curb Cut Effect” (PBS): curb cuts were initially intended to make sidewalks accessible for wheelchair users, but they have also helped people with strollers, bikes, heavy carts, and more. This is an excellent example of how inclusive design can create broader benefits for everyone. What are some ways that you have benefited from curb cuts or other structural changes that helped provide more access to a vulnerable group?  Watch this short video describing the history of Disability Pride Month and chat about why the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) is so significant.  Please email or call me if you ever want to chat about Opportunity, Access, and Inclusion at Englewood Schools, whether that’s for broader resources or questions or specific experiences about your child.  In partnership, Dr. Rana Razzaque  Director of Opportunity, Access, and Inclusion Board of Education Call for Nominations for School Directors The Englewood School District calls for nominations of candidates for school directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Monthly Family Newsletter - June 5, 2025 - End-of-Ye...Monthly Family Newsletter June 5, 2025 A Message from the Superintendent - Preparing Students for Future Success! Dear Families, As we close out the school year, we have so much to celebrate. This year, we had 134 students graduate from Englewood High School and Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice. Between our two high schools, there was over $1.7 million of scholarship money awarded and they served over 2,600 hours of community service. They also earned 1,171 hours of college credits while in high school, saving students and families almost $200,000 in college tuition. We have high-achieving students both in and out of the classroom. Our mission is to prepare students for future success through learning, leading, engagement, and action. I am confident that our graduating seniors are well-prepared to enter the world and lead. I am optimistic about the future because of the bright young minds who are also guided by a genuine commitment to doing what is right for others. We have students who will be future doctors, nurses, engineers, journalists, auto mechanics, chefs, and more. Englewood truly embodies big opportunities in a small and caring setting for our learners. We will update our website on July 1 with information about the next school year. The Englewood Herald published two articles that shine a bright light on our students and community and are a fantastic reminder of the positive things happening every day within the Englewood School District. The article, “Englewood students recognized by educators, board of education,” details the inspiring ways our young learners are being celebrated for their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments. It's truly heartwarming to see their efforts acknowledged by our dedicated educators and the Board of Education. In other wonderful news, The Herald also featured a familiar face in our community. The article, "'The bike guy’: Former Englewood Schools parent assists with Charles Hay World Elementary School bike program,” highlights the amazing support our schools receive from parents, past and present. This heartwarming story showcases the impact of community involvement, with a former parent going above and beyond to enrich the learning experience for our Charles Hay students through their fantastic bike program. It's a testament to the strong bonds within our Englewood Schools family! We are so fortunate to have such dedicated students, supportive families, and a community that rallies around our schools.   8th Grade Awards and Clap Out to EHS   Bishop Kick Off to Summer Opportunity, Access and Inclusion (OAI) Inclusive Excellence - Our Unwavering Commitment As we celebrate the close of another successful school year, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible community. Last fall, we set out to build an even safer, more inclusive, and more supportive environment than the previous year– one where every student could truly thrive and feel a sense of belonging. From our principals and district leaders to our dedicated nutrition services, custodial, transportation, teaching, mental health, paraeducator, and central office staff—and everyone in between—each year we sharpen our focus on living out our district's purpose: Englewood Schools has a moral imperative and unwavering commitment to ensure extraordinary outcomes for each student. Diversity is an asset. We are committed to honoring students' identities, cultures, and abilities while breaking down barriers to a safe and equitable learning experience. In service of this, we maintain high expectations and nurture all aspects of the whole child. Every morning, you entrust us with your most precious gift–your children. We don’t take that responsibility lightly, and we also know that when our efforts are done in partnership with families and community members, they are even more meaningful for our students. Thank you for your support, collaboration, and commitment! June History/Heritage Celebrations In June, we celebrate LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer) Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising in New York City on June 28, 1969, which sparked national awareness and activism. There are many local celebrations, as well as virtual events through the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, on June 19th, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was to go into effect on January 1, 1863, it wasn’t until 900 days later, on June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Texas learned that they were liberated. Monthly Family Newsletter - April 3, 2025Monthly Family Newsletter April 3, 2025 A Message from the Superintendent - With the Help of our Staff, our Students Can Do It! Dear Englewood Families, One of my priority goals for Englewood is for all our schools to achieve a Performance rating from the Colorado Department of Education. We’re almost there! This progress reflects our staff's dedication and our students' talents. While learning is measured in many ways, state testing provides valuable insight into our growth as a district committed to high expectations. In April, grades 3rd through 11th grade will take state tests. The elementary and middle school students will take the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS). Our high school students, freshmen and sophomores, will take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and 11th graders will take the SAT. Scores help determine class placements and support a student in selecting the right college. SAT scores can also lead to scholarships, and state assessments provide families, educators, and the community with insights into school performance. While tests do not tell the whole story of a student’s education, it is a measure we use to accelerate learning and improve outcomes. It is essential to support students who feel anxious about testing. Our teachers care deeply about our students and their educational success and can help them with strategies to reassure them.  Testing matters, and in a small district, every student’s participation impacts our overall results. That’s why I encourage you to help your student approach testing with confidence—they have been preparing for this all year and have the skills to show what they know.  Thank you for supporting testing with a positive attitude and enthusiasm that says, “Englewood Students Got This!” In Partnership, Joanna   Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week with Us - Submit Photos! 📚🎉 Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5-9, and we’re excited to celebrate the incredible educators and staff who make a difference in your child’s life every day! This is the perfect time to show gratitude for the dedication, passion, and hard work of the adults who inspire and support our students. As part of our celebration, we’d love to feature special moments between students and staff on social media! 📸 How You Can Participate: Please share a photo of your child with a teacher or staff member who has positively impacted their education. Upload your photo using this Google Form link. The deadline for submission is April 24 at 3:30 p.m. Let’s come together as a community to say THANK YOU to our outstanding educators! Follow us on social media throughout the week to see these heartwarming moments.   Celebrating Excellence in Early Childhood Education! 🌟 Our ECE program, led by Kara Blanchard, has achieved a Level 5 rating from Colorado Shines—the highest possible rating from the Colorado Department of Early Childhood (CDEC)! With 121 out of 123 points, the team excelled in Learning Environment, Workforce Qualifications & Professional Development, Child Health, and Family Partnerships—earning perfect scores in these areas! Congratulations to ECE Director Kara Blanchard, Instructional Coach Shalee Meyer, our dedicated staff, and amazing families for making early childhood education shine in Englewood! 🎉👏 District News and Department Updates Learning Services State Testing on the Horizon Dear Englewood Families, Get ready to showcase all the amazing progress our students have made! It's hard to believe, but we're already gearing up for this year's essential statewide assessments. These assessments are our chance to shine, providing valuable insights into how our students are mastering grade-level expectations. They're the common yardstick for Colorado, helping us ensure everyone is on the path to success! Here's the lineup: CMAS tests (Grades 3-8, 5, 8, 11): These tests highlight our students' skills in English language arts, math, and science. PSAT (Grades 9-10): A key step for our high schoolers on their college readiness journey. SAT (Grade 11): Our 11th graders will tackle this crucial college entrance exam! Why are these assessments so important? They empower us to: Celebrate successes: See how our schools and district are performing overall. Target support: Pinpoint areas where we can provide extra help to ensure every student thrives. Close achievement gaps: Take action to support all students in making meaningful progress. Mark your calendars! Testing windows are: CMAS: April 7-25 PSAT/SAT: April 14-25 Check your school's website or newsletter for your specific testing schedule. Board of Education Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the City of Englewood The Board of Education has been asked to consider allowing the City of Englewood to place R900 megahertz antennas on the roof of Charles Hay and Englewood High School. This would be done through an amendment to our Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA). The City of Englewood has provided the following information for your review and the Board of Education’s review: Presentation from the City of Englewood at the March 4, 2025, Regular Board Meeting. To watch the live stream of the meeting, click here. FAQ R900 RF Emissions sheet Studies about the impacts of radio frequency emissions on people are linked: CA Council of Science and Technology RF and Madison and Dane County RF Report. The City of Englewood wanted our school communities to be informed that the water meters already transmit the radio frequency. The City needs a place to collect the data with the possibility that it might be transmitted in the future. At this time, nothing would be sent out from the device that would be put on the roof. Whether the antenna is there or not, the water meters are transmitting from homes. There is a plastic sender at the base of each water meter that sends the transmission. Once the signal is caught, it goes to the base of the antenna and is sent to the main network in the cloud.  Please contact the Board of Education by signing up to make a public comment or emailing the board at katie_wilberdingcross@engschools.net, julie_hoag@engschools.net, duane_tucker@engschools.net, davon_williams@engschools.net, or anna_whistler@engschools.net. Monthly Family Newsletter - March 6, 2025 Monthly Family Newsletter March 6, 2025 A Message from the Superintendent - Englewood Middle School & Englewood Leadership Academy Becoming One Dear Englewood Families, In times of change, we hold true to our core values. Englewood Schools’ core values are: high expectations, accountability, integrity, respect, and community. As we work together to merge Englewood Middle School (EMS) and Englewood Leadership Academy (ELA) into one unified school, we will lean into these values.  High expectations will be paramount when exploring and creating stronger academic pathways for our middle school students. The Englewood Middle School Academic Advisory Committee will lead this work.  Respect and community will be central to our culture and climate work. We will find respectful and creative ways for students, families, and staff to come together to support each other in this transition.  Accountability and community will be at the forefront of the inclusive conversations we will have with our elementary school communities and our current middle school communities. We will also lean into new groups like Vibrant Englewood to support us in creating a middle school we all take pride in.  The Englewood Schools’ community has my commitment to continue to build a middle school experience that we can all be proud of and serve every student in our community. The Englewood Schools’ team and I will continue to work every day to provide an exceptional educational experience as we become one community building a new tradition of excellence. In Partnership, Joanna What's Ahead for Englewood Middle School? Families, students, and community members will have opportunities to participate in this exciting transition. Look for upcoming events, including a community picnic and a special ceremony to honor our school’s past and welcome the future. Below is the vision of some highlights that will unite us and how we will involve the Englewood Schools community. ✔ Stronger Academic Pathways – The Englewood Middle School Academic Advisory Committee will convene in the 2025-2026 school year to help drive academic excellence at Englewood Middle School. This diverse group, including school and district leaders, teachers, parents, and stakeholders, will research and recommend best practices in middle school education, looking inside and outside the walls of EMS. Activities will include site visits, exploration of academic pathways and enrichment opportunities for our students, and formulating recommendations to best serve our middle school students. Additional information will be forthcoming, including how you can get involved with this exciting and important work.   ✔ A Connected & Thriving School Culture – As part of the Culture & Climate Initiative led by Principal Hart and her team, the student leadership group and School Accountability Committee (SAC) will help foster unity during the transition. To build excitement, we have plans for our students to receive swag like T-shirts and stickers to symbolize coming together. An assembly will be centered around the theme of "We Are Connected", reinforcing a sense of unity. A special ceremony will honor the closing of one school and incorporate meaningful elements into a new design. Families will also be invited to a Middle School Community Picnic on May 13, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. to mark the transition. Overall, the goal is to create a meaningful farewell while embracing the exciting journey ahead.  ✔ Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future—We are committed to including the important voices at the elementary and middle school levels as students and families consider their journeys to and from middle school. We will meet with PTO/PTSAs, School Accountability Committees (SAC), the District Accountability Committee (DAC), and greater Englewood groups committed to supporting our students and schools. If you want ways to share your ideas about EMS, please attend the March 11 SAC meeting from 4:30-6:00 in the library. Please join us on this journey, and thank you for your support as we take this important step forward. We are excited about the possibilities this transformation will bring for our students and our entire Englewood community! (Picture to the left - Artist credit: Marek Tartal) March is Women’s History Month–a great time to make sure that we are amplifying the achievements of women who helped shape our past and will help build our future. As we consider stories of empowered women this month, let’s be sure to include intersectional identities, such as women with disabilities, BIPOC women, LGBTQ+ women, women who immigrated to the United States, and other important identities that represent the rich diversity within our communities. March is also Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, so consider strategies to be more inclusive of students and families with diverse (dis)abilities, both visible and invisible.       Board of Education Englewood Schools Board of Education Election – Make a Difference! Monthly Family Newsletter - February 6, 2025 Monthly Family Newsletter February 6, 2025 A Message from the Superintendent Dear Englewood Schools' Families, As I visit with students across our District, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to live in a small community that promotes deep connection with one another. Ivan Flores Gutierrez, a sophomore at Englewood High School, shared the following words with me when I asked him about his educational journey in Englewood, which began at Clayton Elementary, followed by Englewood Middle School and now Englewood High School.  “There’s a group of people for you. There’s a teacher for you. There’s a club for you.”  He said that by attending a small high school, he is able to form “better bonds” with his classmates. He also said, “There are a lot of people who look out for you” at EHS. Ivan is a talented leader who wants to pursue a career in mechanical or electrical engineering after high school. I recently saw him in Mr. Schmidt’s Intro to Engineering Class engaging in the design thinking process. Ivan likes to be challenged academically and is driven by a healthy competition with his peers to do better in school.  Big opportunities for every student in a small, caring district – that is what we are all about in Englewood.  In Partnership, Joanna (Picture on the left) Ivan is pictured above with Superintendent Polzin, Board of Education members Julie Hoag, Katie Wilberding Cross, and Anna Whistler. (Picture on the right) Ivan is pictured with Director of Opportunity, Access & Inclusion Dr. Rana Razzaque. Ivan had the opportunity to lead student groups at the Colorado Association of School Board (CASB) convention in December. He will also speak on a panel at an upcoming CASB networking event in February.            EMS/ELA Survey: Your Voice Matters The Englewood Board of Education is considering potential changes to Englewood Middle School (EMS) and/or Englewood Leadership Academy (ELA). As part of our commitment to transparency and open communication, we invite you to complete a survey conducted by Magellan Strategies on behalf of the Board. We recognize that this decision will impact students and families across our district, including those in ECE at Maddox, elementary schools, and middle school. Additionally, our high school families have an important perspective to share. Your feedback is invaluable in shaping the future of our schools, and we encourage all Englewood Schools families and staff to participate. The Board of Education is dedicated to hearing from the entire Englewood Schools community before making this important decision. Please take a moment to share your thoughts via the survey link below. This survey closes on Monday, February 10, 2025 at noon. Thank you for your time and participation. These are just a few celebrations from the most recent round of Interim testing that show what Englewood schools and our students are capable of.            Englewood Library Partnership The Englewood Library continues to support Englewood Schools' elementary PATHS initiative by displaying a curated display of books aligned with the PurposeFull People curriculum.  Stop by and check out their selection of titles that support the program's monthly theme.           District Events | Free and Low Cost Events District Events: February 5: Charles Hay Kindergarten 2025-26 Information Night (4:30-5:30 p.m.) February 6: Bishop 2025-26 Kindergarten Tours (3:15-4:00 p.m.) February 6: ECE Car Seat Safety Night for families (5:00-7:00 p.m.) February 13: Charles Hay Cougarpalooza/Wellness Night and Silent Auction (5:00-7:00 p.m.) February 14: Clayton New 2025-26 Student/Family Tour (9:00-9:40 a.m.) February 14: No School February 17: No School  February 20: Clayton One School, One Book Celebration (4:30-6:30 p.m.) February 24-27: ECE Scholastic Book Fair February 26-27: Parent-Teacher Conferences (check with your child’s school for times) February 27: No School for elementary students February 28: No School for all students - Conference Compensation Day *Cherrelyn Elementary has open school tours for interested 2025-2026 kindergarten families. Please call the main office to schedule a tour. Good News Stories My Home, My Town, Englewood, Colorado The City of Englewood and one of our local school families collaborated to create an engaging community activity book for young residents. This project, funded by a City of Englewood Neighborhood Improvement Grant, aimed to foster a deeper connection between children and their community. The colorful activity book features information about Englewood, including its schools, parks, and local businesses, presented in an interactive and engaging format. Coloring pages, puzzles, and other fun activities encourage children to explore and learn about their city. Every student in the Englewood School District, from preschool to elementary school, received a copy of the activity book, promoting community pride and fostering a deeper understanding of their surroundings.                     Police Chief Jackson's Visit Gets Students Moving Police Chief Jackson toured the Englewood Campus with Officer Shaw, Principal Nate Smith, and Superintendent Polzin. During his visit, Englewood Middle School students got an unexpected workout when Chief Jackson, P.E. teacher Jeremy Leiker, and Director of Safety & Security Mark Edson challenged them to push-ups. Students eagerly joined in, laughing and smiling as they participated. The fun, interactive visit strengthened community connections and left a lasting impression. "It's wonderful to see our community leaders engaging with students in such a positive way," said Superintendent Polzin. Opportunity, Access and Inclusion (OAI) Inclusive Excellence While Dr. Razzaque is on maternity leave, we will share her resources on heritage months and notable events. (Picture to the left - Artist credit: Ashwin Chacko) Black History Month is observed in February. This is a powerful time to honor the history and contributions of African Americans in the US and beyond. Much of what our country is today has been made possible by the forced labor of enslaved Africans and their descendants, who suffered the horrors of the transatlantic trafficking of their people, chattel slavery, overt violence and discrimination under Jim Crow, and present-day disparities. It is important to recognize not only the trauma of this history but also recognize Black culture in terms of joy, love, and humanity.
