Budget Reduction Plan
Dear Tecumseh Families and Community, It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing with you important information regarding our budget reduction plan. For the past two decades, our district has made numerous reductions to offset the lack of additional funding at the local level. Since this period began, Tecumseh Local Schools has implemented nearly seven million dollars in budget cuts. More recently, we have reduced expenditures by over one million dollars since 2018. The upcoming cost containment measures included in this correspondence, and reviewed with the board of education during the February 2025 board of education meeting, outline the necessary steps to be taken at the end of this school year and in the years ahead. These steps will depend on the renewal of funding efforts and the initiatives to secure additional local revenue. Tecumseh Local Schools last passed a new operating levy in 1995. The emergency COVID funding that our district, along with many other districts received over the past several years, was strategically used over the past few years to offset some of our current salaries, expenses and purchase long overdue curriculum materials. That funding no longer exists, therefore we are now dependent on our general fund for all expenditures. Our goal is to refrain from deficit spending, as long as we are able. It is becoming more difficult to spend less than we are taking in as a result of cost increases over the past thirty years. This is a challenging and uncertain time for public school finance. We continue to extract savings from a shrinking pool of resources. All cost containment measures have a potential for a negative impact. The measures we will implement at the end of this school year, as well as those anticipated in the future, could have a significant and lasting effect on our students, staff, and community. Please see the Budget Reduction Plan below. If you have specific questions, please feel free to reach out to me at paula.crew@tecumsehlocal.org . Sincerely, Paula Crew Tecumseh Local Schools Budget Reduction Plan 2025 - 2028 Cost Containment Measures that will go into effect for the 2025-2026 school year: Reduction of one guidance counselor Reduction of one P.E. teacher at TMS Reduction of one classroom teacher at DV Reduction of one classroom teacher at NC Reduction of three classroom teachers at TMS Reduction of three classroom teachers at THS Reduction of one contracted nurse from the CCESC Reduction of two Title One teachers Professional Development - State/Federal requirement or grant funded opportunities only $871,413 Total Cost Containment Measures Future Cost Containment Measures - Phase One : If the renewal (2.1 million) does not pass in May of 2025, the following cost containment measures will be evaluated for reduction at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Eliminate one elective at THS Eliminate one elective at TMS Elimination of music and art at elementary level Eliminate one classroom teacher at THS $646,000 Total Phase I Future Cost Containment Measures - Phase Two: Future potential cost containment measures pending outcome of two renewal levy(s) - one which generates 2.1 million and one which generates $700,000, and a new operating levy. (The last operating levy passed in 1995). Elimination of the middle and high school FFA Program Elimination of the ROTC Program Elimination of Athletics Elimination of middle and high school music and band Reduction of 2 contracted nurses $1,054,000 Total Phase II $2,537,413 All Phases Estimadas familias y comunidad de Tecumseh: Con gran pesar comparto con ustedes información importante sobre nuestro plan de reducción de presupuesto.
