How are we communicating? Let us know! Are you hearing from your child’s teachers and school? Do you want more information? Less? What topics matter most to you, and how can we better support your family? Every few years, we ask parents to share feedback on how and what we communicate. Your input helps us make sure we’re meeting the needs of our families and improving how we stay connected.   Please take a few minutes to complete this survey so we can evaluate our communication methods and ensure families feel informed and supported. The survey will close Sunday, May 3, 2026. Communication/Engagement Survey K-5 Social Studies Textbook Adoption The Grants Pass School District School Board is considering the adoption of a Social Studies curriculum for elementary students.   The curriculum adoption team, made up of teachers representing all six elementary schools and all six grade levels, reviewed multiple options and is recommending the adoption of Gibbs Smith Education. All student and staff resources are hard-copy materials, which is an intentional choice as we strive for less screen time during the academic day. The recommended materials will be used this fall. Materials can be previewed in person at our district office. After reviewing the recommended curriculum, please submit your comments no later than May 11, 2026. K-12 ELD Textbook Adoption The Grants Pass School District School Board is also considering the adoption of an English Language Development (ELD) curriculum for Kindergarten through 12th grade. The ELD curriculum is used for students whose first language is not English. A team of ELD teachers, reviewed multiple options and are recommending National Geographic Learning. Student and staff resources are hard-copy materials, which is an intentional choice as we strive for less screen time during the academic day. The recommended materials will be used this fall. Materials can be previewed in person at the district office. After reviewing the recommended curriculum, please submit your comments no later than May 11, 2026. Happy Birthday America! On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Grants Pass School Board unanimously adopted RESOLUTION 2526-04. The resolution is a public declaration by the School Board proudly commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America and encouraging students, staff, and the Grants Pass community "to be aware of and reflect upon the things that make America exceptional — including individual liberty, equality under the law, self-governance, personal responsibility, free enterprise, innovation, perseverance, the sacrifices made to secure freedom, and the contributions of diverse peoples to our nation’s story — through appropriate educational experiences." Visit our website to read the resolution in its entirety. The United States of America will commemorate its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. Why do we use both ParentSquare and Peachjar? We received a question in our Communication & Engagement Survey about why we use Peachjar instead of sending the same information through ParentSquare—great question! ParentSquare is our official school-to-home communication platform for all of our schools (K-12). It’s used only for school and district information, not for events or activities from outside organizations. Peachjar, on the other hand, is designed specifically for community information. It delivers colorful, bilingual flyers with easy-to-click links for registration and contact information. It also includes built-in accessibility features that meet federal requirements for digital accessibility—something a standard flyer attachment in ParentSquare would not provide. Examples of Peachjar flyers include sports programs, summer camps, foster care resources, and local library events. Keeping school and community information separate gives families more control. You can choose to unsubscribe or resubscribe to Peachjar at any time without missing important school updates. To help limit inbox clutter, Peachjar flyers are sent only twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Thank you for that question! Stories to Share The Caveman Chronicle As part of our district's strategic plan and our focus on strengthening community engagement, we created a district magazine! Our goal is to publish one edition this school year, with plans to grow to two editions annually by 2027–28. Inside the Caveman Chronicle, you’ll find stories highlighting our schools, programs, and clubs, along with alumni and staff spotlights, and more. Our journalism students at Grants Pass High School helped write articles for this first edition, with support from their teacher, Mrs. Tyrrell, and our district communications department. Copies were delivered to all schools, as well as local businesses around town. Are you 62 or older? Join the waitlist! Our senior-citizen season-ticket program is expanding!   Currently, community members age 62 and older can attend Grants Pass High School's regular season athletic events at no cost. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, the program will also include art, music, and theatre performances.   This is our way of honoring our senior community members while celebrating the incredible talents of our students and staff.   Interested in a “golden pass” for next year? Grants Pass Glimpse March 2026 Upcoming Dates & Events Mar. 20: NO SCHOOL - Professional Development/Clerical Day Mar. 23-27: NO SCHOOL - Spring Break Mar. 31: School Board Workshop Apr. 7-9: READY! for Kindergarten Apr. 14: School Board Meeting More events... All-Weather Tracks Coming to Our Middle Schools We’re excited to share that for the first time, both North Middle School and South Middle School will be getting brand new all-weather tracks! These six-lane tracks will give students a safe, all-weather space for physical education classes, athletics, and everyday activity. Right now, both schools have older decomposed granite tracks that can become muddy and uneven, especially during the winter months. The new surfaces will make a big difference for student safety and access. In addition to the new track, North Middle School will also receive an upgrade to its football field, including improved drainage. The current field often becomes muddy and difficult to use during the wet season, and these improvements will help create a more usable space for students throughout the year. This upgrade will benefit every student, not just athletes. It also means middle school teams will (eventually) be able to host meets on their own campuses, instead of traveling to Grants Pass High School. That means less time on buses, fewer scheduling challenges, and more time in class. Construction is expected to begin in May and wrap up around September. There may be some temporary impacts to fall activities depending on construction progress, but we’re excited about what these improvements will mean for students for years to come. This project is part of a multi-million dollar investment made possible through the district’s 2023 debt restructuring plan, which freed up funding specifically for long-term facility improvements. We’re also taking this opportunity to replace the track at Grants Pass High School, which has seen significant use over the years as our district’s only all-weather track. We can’t wait to see our students and community enjoy these new spaces! New Student Registration is Open If you know a family with a kindergartner or a student in grades 1-12 who wants to enroll in our district, let them know new student registration is open for the 2026-27 school year. Opening up registration earlier, helps new families get connected and allows secondary students more time to select their classes. Current students and families: Returning student registration will open May 1. Transfer request applications (for those who live outside of the Grants Pass School District) will also open in May. Thanks for helping to spread the word! Reminder: Social Studies Curriculum Public input is open through April 13, 2026 for the new proposed Social Studies materials for middle and high school. Middle School (Grades 6–8): Traverse Curriculum High School (Grades 9–12): McGraw-Hill Social Studies Materials are available for review online and linked on our website. Please call 541-474-5709 with any questions. Thank you! GPSD7 Placed in Top Group Under New State Accountability System Oregon’s new Education Accountability Act (Senate Bill 141) groups similar school districts based on performance, student demographics, and community characteristics to help set student achievement goals.   Grants Pass School District 7 has been placed in the top performance group for what ODE calls “medium city/suburb/small suburb” districts.   Our comparison group includes several high-performing districts across the state, including Lake Oswego, Riverdale, Sherwood, Philomath, Corvallis, and Ashland.   The new framework sets targets in areas such as attendance, third-grade reading, eighth-grade math, ninth-grade on-track progress, and graduation rates.   Being grouped with these districts reflects the strong work already happening in our schools. Now our focus shifts to continuing our progress and meeting the goals set for student success. We are GP! Stories to Share We're Expanding! 🎉 We are excited to announce that beginning in the 2027–28 school year, our free Early Learning Program will expand to a second site at Parkside Elementary School! This expansion will allow us to double our preschool capacity and expand our parent-child playgroups, which have seen a 60% increase in participation. Construction on a new ADA-accessible playground is slated to begin later this year. We would love your input on the playground design. 🔔 Preschool applications are open now for the 2026-27 school year. Gladiola Plant Sale Coming Soon 🌱 Our Gladiola High School garden students have been hard at work planting and nurturing seeds into thriving plants. Their plant sale is just around the corner. This year there will be starts for: 🌼 Flowers 🥒 Vegetables 🌿 Herbs When the plants are ready for sale, we'll post on our social media pages and send a flyer out through Peachjar. Grants Pass School District 7 is expanding our free Early Learning Program to a second site. Launched in 2023 and funded entirely through grants and donations, our early learning program provides inclusive preschool, playgroups, family workshops, and kindergarten readiness classes at no cost to families living within district boundaries. Early learning programs do not receive state funding like K–12 education, so community support makes this work possible. Early results show the program is making a difference. District data indicates that children who participated in the district’s early learning programs are scoring higher on mid-year kindergarten reading assessments compared to peers who did not participate. Now, we’re ready to grow. Proceeds from our inaugural Tee Up for Early Learning Golf Scramble will help fund the opening of a second early learning site at Parkside Elementary School for the 2027–28 school year. It’s where families can see assignments, grades, due dates, and class announcements all in one place. Watch this short video for a quick overview of Canvas and how parents and guardians can log in for the first time. Additional Canvas resources are available on our website. AI Can Be Wrong - Check Official Sources! A parent called us recently to confirm whether we had school. They had Googled it and the AI-generated response that pulled to the top of the search engine said school was canceled. We ran a search ourselves (“Does Grants Pass School District 7 have school today?”) and sure enough we saw the same incorrect result. The truth? We did have school! AI can sometimes give the wrong answer. For accurate information about weather-related closures or delays, always check: Our school and district websites ParentSquare notifications (text, email, call, or app) These official channels will always have the correct information. As a reminder, decisions about winter weather are generally made after 5:30 a.m. on the day of the weather event. This new outdoor classroom includes two additional vehicle lifts and more than doubles the hands-on working space available to students. The expansion is estimated to cost between $750,000 and $800,000 and was funded through a debt restructuring plan approved by our School Board in the spring of 2023. This plan has allowed our district to complete approximately $13 million in safety and facility upgrades across the district over the past few years with no added cost to taxpayers. We also want to thank Grants Pass Toyota and Grants Pass Automotive for their continued partnership and for a generous $50,000 donation given at the ribbon-cutting to support the program. Their ongoing support, including donations of funding and vehicles, helps provide meaningful hands-on learning opportunities for students. View additional pictures from the ribbon-cutting ceremony here. School Board Recognition Month January is School Board Recognition Month! One Less Thing to Worry About After the Holidays After the busy holiday season, school breakfast and lunch can be a simple way to get back into a routine. All students in the Grants Pass School District can enjoy free breakfast and lunch every school day from our nationally recognized food service program. Starting the day with breakfast at school helps save valuable time in the morning and can make getting out the door a little easier. School meals can also help stretch grocery budgets, which can be especially helpful after the holidays. Even students who pack a lunch are welcome to go through the line for a fruit or vegetable, milk, and more. Before winter break, families at our elementary schools were invited to join their students for holiday meals in the cafeteria. These special lunches give families a chance to see what's cooking in our school kitchens and enjoy time together, with help from first responders, school resource officers, School Board members, and district staff who volunteered to serve. As a reminder, exciting updates continue in our school kitchens. With new equipment and an increased focus on scratch cooking, students are enjoying meals that are nutritious and that they look forward to. Monthly menus are available online so families can easily see what is being served each day. Free, convenient, and nutritious school meals are one less thing to worry about and a great way to start the year strong. We look forward to seeing what students create this year!   GPHS football team logs nearly 800 hours of community service The Grants Pass High School football program is proving that true champions make an impact far beyond the field. Since May, Varsity and JV football players have completed nearly 800 hours of community service under the leadership of first-year head coach Matt Kennedy. Athletes have been volunteering all over Grants Pass, providing their time and energy to causes that make a difference. They helped set up and serve food at Boatnik, completed landscaping projects at a preschool, and helped pick 16,000 pounds of pears from a church orchard that gives the fruit to food banks. Many players also completed their own service hours for things they care about personally. Coach Kennedy requires each student athlete to complete at least five hours of community service to be eligible to play, but his players have gone well beyond that. With around 75 athletes on the team rosters, they could have stopped at 375 hours. Instead, they are closing in on double that number, with some players logging as many as 40 hours of service. “It’s important to me that our players do more than entertain people on Friday night,” said Coach Kennedy. “I want them to give back and leave their community better than it was before.” Athletes are eligible to earn points toward the Ultimate Caveman Award, for their community service, which recognizes one student athlete who excels on and off the field. The award acknowledges and celebrates players who work hard in the classroom, show up on time, have good attendance, keep grades up, and participate in other school sports or activities like leadership, clubs, or music. We’re proud of the leadership and direction Coach Kennedy is bringing to the program, and of how our football team is living out our district’s mission to empower each student to reach their potential and become responsible, productive, and successful citizens. Way to go, Cavemen! ⚠ Fentanyl and Opioid Drugs ⚠ Our school holds student wellbeing at the heart of the work that we do. We are writing to share concerns about fentanyl and opioid drugs. These drugs are harming people in our community. We hope this information will help protect students. Teen drug use has been decreasing over time. However, data shows that there has been an increase in overdoses, mainly due to illicit fentanyl in the drug market (NIDA, 2023). Many teens are attempting to acquire Adderall, Percocet, Oxycodone and Xanax pills when in fact they are getting fake pills made from a cheap, deadly and more potent synthetic drug called fentanyl. It is crucial to educate students and young people about substance use risks, including the potential of fentanyl in illicit pills and other substances. It is also important to raise awareness about opioid antagonists (such as naloxone). What is an opioid? Opioids come from the opium poppy plant and include drugs like morphine, oxycodone, dilaudid, heroin, and fentanyl. They attach to receptors to block pain and increase pleasure. Overdose is a common risk associated with opioids and can be intentional or accidental. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid: a dose as small as a few grains of sand can make a person stop breathing within minutes. Why do people use opioids? Opioids may be prescribed as pain medicine. Some young people try drugs because they are curious. Some people use drugs to avoid feeling difficult emotions. Opioids are addictive. If you’re a parent and are thinking to yourself, “my kid isn’t a drug addict,” know that most teens who use pills do not fit our dated notion of a drug user. Often, teens are seeking out what they think are real pharmaceutical pills to deal with anxiety or other mental health struggles. Others are looking to experiment or have “some fun.” But the days of harmless experimentation are over when one pill can kill. What is an opioid antagonist? Opioid antagonists are medications (naloxone is the most commonly known opioid antagonist) that can be delivered by a nasal spray or injection to quickly restore normal breathing for a person whose breathing has slowed down or stopped because of an overdose of fentanyl, prescription opioids or heroin. Naloxone onset occurs within 2-3 minutes and can last for 30-90 minutes. Sometimes a second dose of naloxone is necessary if symptoms of overdose return. Naloxone may be administered in emergency overdose situations and is safe for the person receiving the medication. What can you do? Please talk about the dangers of fentanyl and availability of opioid agonists with your students and others you care about. Consider having naloxone available in your home for the quickest response during a medical emergency. Learn more about how to get naloxone and how to use it here: Opioid Overdose Reversal Medications. What is your school district doing?  GPSD7 provides comprehensive drug and alcohol education aligned with the 2023 Oregon Health Education Standards. In addition, we care deeply about the health and safety of every student in our school community. All schools stock naloxone. Naloxone is safe. Select trained staff may administer naloxone to any person suspected of experiencing an opioid overdose. Anytime naloxone is administered school staff will call 911 and notify the student’s parents or guardian. For a more comprehensive education of Fentanyl and Naloxone, please see the Fentanyl Toolkit for Schools.     Stay connected to Grants Pass School District 7! Quick Links 2025-26 School Calendars Breakfast & Lunch Menus Library Books Being Added Volunteering Information School & Community Flyers The Long-Term Impact of Attendance 💪 Start strong, stay strong! RESEARCH SHOWS: Early Grades Matter: Students who are chronically absent in kindergarten & 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by 3rd grade. Middle School Warning Signs: By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a strong predictor of dropping out. High School Success: In 9th grade, attendance is one of the best indicators of whether a student will graduate on time - stronger than test scores! We don’t want any student to fall behind or feel discouraged. Let’s work together to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed! Every day counts! Additional resources for families: https://www.grantspass.k12.or.us/parents/attendance   What do hold, secure, and lockdown mean? The difference between a “Secure” and a “Lockdown” is the most important part of our emergency response system for families to understand. A Secure is used when there is a potential danger outside the building, such as a wild animal on school grounds or nearby police activity. A Lockdown is only used if there is an active threat inside or very close to the building. Grants Pass School District uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) from the I Love You Guys Foundation to respond to a variety of situations, including weather events, accidents, police investigations, intruders, and other emergencies. If a Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, or Shelter is called, families will receive a ParentSquare notification as soon as possible. We will share accurate information as we are able, though details are often limited in the moment. Our first priority is always to respond quickly and keep students and staff safe. During any of these scenarios, we ask that you do not call or go to the school. A Hold is different. These are brief situations, such as keeping hallways clear while a spill is cleaned up or while a medical emergency is handled, and usually do not result in a parent notification. You can learn more about each of the SRP actions on our Emergency Protocols webpage.   Customize your ParentSquare alerts ParentSquare makes it easy to customize how and when you receive updates from your child’s school and the district. You can choose between email, text, and app notifications, and even set how often you’d like to be notified. Instant: You’ll get all post notifications in real time. Digest (the default): Urgent posts, alerts, and direct messages arrive right away, while non-time-sensitive posts are grouped together in a single message at the end of the day. This helps cut down on the number of notifications you receive. Keep in mind: All emergency notifications come through immediately, no matter your setting. Schools can override settings for urgent messages. If you have children in multiple schools and choose Instant notifications, the number of messages you receive may add up quickly. 👉 Visit this help article for step-by-step instructions on adjusting your notification settings. A note from our food & nutrition services team We are pleased to inform you that Grants Pass School District will once again participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2025–2026 school year. Under this program, all students at our school are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at no charge, regardless of family income. Key benefits of the CEP: All enrolled students will receive free breakfast and lunch. No household meal applications are required for students to receive free meals. Meal service becomes more efficient, as all students are served at no cost, which helps reduceadministrative work and eliminates the collection of unpaid meal fees. This initiative is a great benefit for our school community. By ensuring all students have access to healthy meals, we can help them learn and thrive.
