  • PUSD E-Connect: Hometown Parade Highlights & More

PUSD Celebrates Community at Pleasanton’s Hometown Holiday Parade Last Saturday night, downtown Pleasanton was glowing with lights, music, and holiday cheer as families gathered along Main Street for the annual Hometown Holiday Parade and tree-lighting ceremony. This longstanding tradition continues to be a highlight of the season and a joyful start to December in Pleasanton. PUSD was once again well represented in the parade, featuring both the Amador Valley and Foothill High School marching bands and cheer programs, Pleasanton Adult & Career Education (PACE), and the PUSD Performing Arts Program, which includes Mariachi, Baile Folklórico, Bollywood, Hip Hop, Bollyhop, and STEP. Superintendent Ghysels joined members of the Board of Trustees and Executive Cabinet walking in front of a decorated PUSD school bus, waving to families along the route. Together, these groups brought music, spirit, and energy to Main Street, showcasing the talents, spirit, and pride of our students and school community. • PUSD E-Connect – Budget Decisions and Next Steps

Board Approves Additional Budget Reductions and Prepares for Next Steps The Board of Trustees continues to move forward in addressing PUSD’s structural budget deficit and maintaining fiscal solvency. At its November 20 Special Board Meeting, the Board approved the additional 2026–27 budget reductions totaling $3.5 million identified at the November 13 meeting. Trustees also approved a reduction in the daily substitute teacher rate, which is expected to generate $125K in additional savings. With the actions taken at the November 13 meeting, the Board has now approved a total of $11.2 million in budget reductions for 2026–27. The Board also directed District staff to begin planning for the implementation of these reductions, noting that approximately half—roughly $5.4 million—will require negotiations with labor partners. 👉 View the November 20 meeting presentation and recording. At the Regular Board Meeting next Thursday, December 11, the District will present the First Interim Budget Report for 2025–26. This report includes updated financial projections for the current fiscal year and the two subsequent fiscal years, which will help inform whether any adjustments to the reduction plan are needed. The public session will begin at 6:00 p.m., and meeting materials will be posted in advance on Simbli. In January, the Board intends to review implementation progress and consider any needed adjustments based on the First Interim Budget, the status of labor negotiations, revenue efforts, updated enrollment trends, and the Governor’s proposed 2026–27 state budget and school-funding outlook expected by January 10. We will continue to keep the community informed as the budget reduction work moves forward, both through E-Connect and on our Budget Engagement webpage.   Celebrating PUSD’s 2026 All-State Musicians PUSD is proud to recognize 43 outstanding middle and high school student musicians selected for the 2026 California All-State Ensembles. This honor reflects a rigorous statewide audition process and highlights the talent, dedication, and hard work of our students, the excellence of our music educators, and the strong support of their families. PUSD students earned All-State recognition at more than ten times the rate we would expect based on our enrollment—a truly remarkable achievement. Congratulations to all of our All-State musicians! We are incredibly proud of their dedication and artistic excellence. 👉 2026 PUSD All-State Student List   Seeking Bilingual Volunteers PUSD is a diverse school district with families from around the world, therefore we're updating a registry of community members who are bilingual (English and any other language) and who are willing to partner with families who may need support with translation/interpretation as they learn English or are looking to get connected with families who share their background. If you are interested, please register via the link below. 👉 Register as a PUSD Bilingual Volunteer   Child Find (IDEA – Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) Child Find is a federal mandate under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires all school districts to “find” and identify children and youth who may have a disability and need special education services. Board Moves Forward With Budget Reduction Decisions After a series of community engagement sessions and Board workshops held from September through November, the Board of Trustees has taken significant and difficult—but necessary—steps toward rebalancing the District’s budget and preserving local control. At its November 13 Regular Board Meeting, the Board formally approved $7,509,727 in reductions for 2026–27 and directed staff to begin implementation through the appropriate processes, which may include negotiations with labor partners, resolutions, program adjustments, and operational steps. 👉 See the list of $7.5M in approved reductions. Also view the November 13 meeting presentation, full 26/27 Reduction Options list, and meeting recording. During the same meeting, Trustees continued their review using the Budget Reductions Analysis Tool and identified an additional $3,526,975 in potential reductions. 👉 See the list of the $3.5M in identified reductions (published as part of the November 20 Board Meeting materials). In total, the Board has now identified $11,036,702 in budget reductions. Next Steps: November 20 Special Board Meeting At its November 20 Special Board Meeting tomorrow (Thursday), which begins at 5:00 p.m., the Board will vote to approve the additional $3,526,975 in reductions identified at the November 13 meeting. In the second part of the meeting, the Board will continue its in-depth budget reduction discussions using the Budget Reductions Analysis Tool to review and identify any remaining potential reductions for 2026–27. This continued work will help Trustees maintain flexibility as negotiations with labor partners progress, consider program impacts, and prepare to respond to updated financial data from the First Interim Budget - presented at the December 11 Board meeting - which may require further reductions. Following this discussion, the Board is expected to take action to finalize the list of reductions and direct staff to begin implementing the budget reduction plan as part of the District’s ongoing effort to address its structural deficit and maintain fiscal solvency. 👉 View the November 20 agenda and learn how to participate. • PUSD E-Connect – Budget Reduction Work Update & More

Board Continues Budget Reduction Work Learn About PUSD’s Budget Challenges As community attention around PUSD’s budget grows, we want to continue to provide clear information about why reductions are needed and the steps involved. PUSD needs to reduce ongoing expenditures and/or increase revenues by approximately $9 million over the next two years to achieve a balanced budget and meet the state-mandated minimum 3% reserve. These are difficult but necessary steps to maintain fiscal solvency and preserve local control over our schools. For those new to the discussion, the resources below explain how we got here, what reductions have already been made, and how the Board is working toward a balanced budget. 👉 Explore our Budget FAQs, 5-Minute Budget Podcast, Town Hall Recording and Presentation Slides. New this week: View the 4-slide summary of PUSD’s Fiscal Challenges, presented at the November 6 Board meeting. Visit our Budget Engagement webpage for all materials in one place. November 6 Board Meeting Summary At its November 6 Special Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees continued, in workshop format, the District’s budget reduction process. Alameda County Superintendent of Schools Alysse Castro attended and reaffirmed the Board’s responsibility to meet State reserve requirements and restore fiscal solvency. She noted that approval of PUSD’s 2025-26 budget remains conditional on continued progress toward a balanced budget to avoid potential State intervention and preserve local control. Following a staff presentation and public comment, Trustees reviewed follow-up questions from the October 30 meeting and continued working through reduction options using the Budget Reductions Analysis Tool. The Board identified an initial $7.5 million in ongoing reductions as part of the minimum savings target committed in Resolution No. 2025-2026.13, adopted on September 25, 2025, which calls for at least $8.9 million in total reductions over 2026–27 and 2027–28. 👉 See the November 6 meeting presentation, summary Trustee weighting sheet, and meeting recording. Next Steps The Board will continue the budget reduction process at its Regular Meeting tomorrow (Thursday, November 13), as part of the open session beginning at 6:00 p.m. Trustees are expected to take formal action to approve the initial $7.5 million in identified ongoing reductions for 2026-27 and direct staff to proceed with implementation through the appropriate processes. Following this action, the Board will continue using the Budget Reductions Analysis Tool to identify additional savings needed to meet the minimum $8.9 million target. The Board may also consider identifying further reductions beyond $8.9 million to address potential fiscal risks that could affect projections, as noted in the analysis previously presented by staff. Meeting materials will be posted prior to the meeting. 👉 See the November 13 meeting agenda and learn how to participate.   PUSD Elementary & Middle Schools Rank Among the Best All Pleasanton Unified elementary and middle schools earned high recognition in the newly released U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Schools Rankings, placing among the top 4% and top 1% of schools statewide, respectively.
