Reminder: Annual Required Notices from the District due Friday, October 18
|
Annually the District provides parents/guardians with notifications that must be acknowledged. If you have not already, we ask that parents/guardians log in to ParentVUE no later than Friday, October 18 view and sign off on these notices.
If you have never logged into ParentVUE, you will find instructions on how to do so when you click the ParentVUE link above. Once logged in, you will be required to complete any missing state-required information, and then you will be prompted to download, read, and take action for each of the notices listed above. If you should have difficulty and need further assistance with your ParentVUE username and/or password, please contact whsattendance@nsd.org.
Please note: When you begin to confirm/update your family information in ParentVUE, please select “2024-25 Annual Update,” rather than the “2024-25 Student Enrollment” button. Only use the “Student Enrollment” button if you are enrolling a new student in Northshore.
Each parent/guardian must acknowledge these notices the next time they log into ParentVUE. Typically, only one parent/guardian per household will need to provide updates to the state-required information. This is required annually to ensure we have current information for each of our families. These steps are required before parents/guardians can access student grades and other information.

Permission to Withhold Parent/Guardian Directory Information Due Tuesday, 10/15
|
Parent/Guardian Directory Info Shared with Higher Ed
In response to updated state laws, the Northshore School District must release parent and guardians’ name, address, email address, and phone number to the state for the purpose of sharing with Washington colleges and universities. Any parents or guardians who are OK with this information being released to OSPI do not need to take action. Any parents or guardians who do not want this information released to OSPI should complete the permission to withhold parent/guardian directory information form, which is due Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Note: The information below is a repeat of the communication sent to families directly from the District on September 10, 2024.
Dear Northshore Parents and Guardians of Students in Grades 9-12,
We are writing to inform you that beginning this school year, the Northshore School District is required by law to release the directory information of high school students and their parents/guardians directly to the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), which will disburse the info to participating individual colleges and universities in Washington and the state community and technical colleges. This is in place for the purpose of communicating about higher education and financial aid opportunities, as described in RCW 28A.150.515 and RCW 28B.10.041.
|
|
|
|
|
What does this mean for parents and guardians?
Parents’ and guardians’ directory information includes names, addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers. Any parents or guardians who are OK with this information being released to OSPI do not need to take action. Any parent or guardian who does not want this information released to OSPI should complete the permission to withhold parent/guardian directory information form, which is due Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024. Tips to keep in mind if you choose to submit this form:
- The release of this information is connected to the student’s record, therefore the form must be completed separately for each student if there is more than one student in high school in the family.
- Only one parent/guardian in the household needs to complete the form (per student) if they want to withhold their information from release.
The permission to withhold student directory information remains in place and is the process to request student directory information be withheld. The due date for this year is Oct. 15, the same date as the permission to withhold parent/guardian directory information.

Juniors Mark Your Calendars: PSAT/NMSQT Tuesday, October 15th
|
In our continued commitment to our students’ college readiness and our ongoing improvement efforts, the annual PSAT/NMSQT exam will be administered Wednesday, October 11th during the school day with results being available in mid-December.
Junior and sophomore students testing MUST CHECK their school email for important information regarding testing schedule, Chromebook checks, and day of test requirements.
-
The PSAT will again be administered electronically this year. The College Board no longer offers a paper and pencil PSAT exam. If you have a student testing, please read closely the information below as it relates to the all-electronic format that includes the use of each student’s district-issued Chromebook. As PSAT testing cannot be done on a student’s personal computer.
- Students are expected to bring their assigned district-issued Chromebook on testing day. If our tech department has a record of a student not having a Chromebook issued, we will try to provide one.
-
Chromebooks must be brought to school fully charged. We cannot guarantee a charging outlet, or another Chromebook will be available.
-
Students must restart and test their Chromebooks a couple of days before the testing day to ensure they are in good working order. Once restarted, when students click on APPS, they should be able to see an application called BLUEBOOK.
- Reach out to our School Technology Station in the library if there are any issues you’re your device.
The exam fee is $20.00 and has been populated to all junior and sophomore accounts and was due September 15.
Again, information regarding day of test procedures will be emailed to all students by Friday, October 10. Questions can be directed to PSAT Testing Coordinator Michael Kelly via email at mkelly2@nsd.org.

Cars and Parking Lots During Options & Lunch
|
A reminder that students are not to be hanging out in cars or in the parking lots during options or lunch. Students were reminded of this during Falcon Days, is not a new policy, but one that we are returning to reinforcing this year for safety and supervision reasons both for students individually and for all WHS students. We will continue to remind students of this the first two days of school, but expect all students are aware of and following this policy after that.

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders: Safety First
|
Falcon Parents, Guardians, and Students,
A reminder, for everyone's safety, that dropping off or picking up students in the WHS Bus Zone is not allowed. It's imperative that this area remains clear for school bus drop off and pick up only. Bus drivers cannot see students that run across the bus zone in front of them to get into or exit a car.
Additionally, students must not cross 195th Street NE at the Bus Zone entrance. There is not a crosswalk at this location. Students should not be dropped off or picked up alongside 195th Street NE.
For drop off/pick up, please use the designated Main Office Drop-Off Loop.
Furthermore, for students that have permission to park in the 600 Building Lot, extreme caution must be used when leaving campus to not dart out of the lot in front of incoming school buses.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important safety matter.
If you should have any questions, please reach out to Campus Supervisor Shaina Bloomquist or Campus Supervisor Alan Dillman.

2024-25 Advanced Placement Testing Payment and Registration Information
|
The 2025 AP exams will cover the full content in each AP course, so students have the opportunity to receive college credit and/or placement. Every AP student should keep their options open by registering for the exam on time because there will still be a $42 fee for late orders. The College Board will support in-school testing in 2024 because administering exams in schools maximizes access and opportunity. If safety concerns still prohibit any students from testing at a school, the College Board will provide a contingency testing option that contains full course content.
Students - Create a College Board Account: Students will need a College Board account to join their AP class section, receive AP assignments from teachers, get feedback on class progress, and register for AP exams (note: parents should not create an account for the student). If you don’t have a student account, go to www.collegeboard.org/register.
Already Have a College Board Account? All College Board programs are connected through one account. If an account was created for AP, PSAT/NMSQT or SAT, you just need your username and password to sign in.
|
|
|
|
|
Advanced Placement Exam Registration & Payment is a two-step process (Both parts must be completed for each AP exam to be registered, ordered, and paid for).
-
STEP 1: Students will need to login or create a College Board account via myap.collegeboard.org. Students will also need a “join code” to join a class section. Note: An exam cannot be ordered for you until you complete Step 1! Students do not need to be enrolled in an AP course to take an AP exam. If you want to take an AP exam and are not enrolled in an AP course, you will still need a join code to register, order, and pay for an exam. Please contact AP Coordinator Andrea Baleva abaleva@nsd.org to get a join code issued.
-
STEP 2: Students will PAY for their AP exam fees via www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/481598 Note: An exam cannot be fully ordered and paid for you until you complete Step 1! (The College Board does not accept payment when registering for an AP exam so we have to use a second party to accept and track exam payment.)
IMPORTANT DEADLINES AND INFORMATION
- AP Registration Deadline: November 15, 2024
- It is recommended that students use their Northshore email account (@apps.nsd.org) when registering for both Total Registration and the College Board. Failure to use the same NSD email on both sites may cause a student to not get the correct AP exam.
- AP exams will cost $108.00 (AP Seminar and AP Research are $148.00).
- Late registration fee mandated by College Board: Students may register for an AP exam AFTER November 15th, 2024 and up until March 7th, 2025, but will have to pay an additional $42 per exam late order fee.
- Any students who qualify for Free & Reduced Lunch are eligible for a fee waiver and will not have to pay for an AP exam.

Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
|
October 24-26 and November 1-2
This Fall, the Woodinville High School Theatre Company (WHSTC) will bring the fresh-from-Broadway, electropop-opera Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 to the WHS stage. Based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel War and Peace, The Great Comet was conceived by the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy, and premiered in October 2012, at Ars Nova in New York City, under the direction of Rachel Chavkin, with Malloy in the lead role of Pierre. The production later opened on Broadway in November 2016, starring Josh Groban and Denée Benton, and was nominated for 12 awards for the 2017 Tony Awards. Inspired by a 70-page slice of War and Peace, this innovative new musical is vibrant and immersive and brings us just inches from Tolstoy’s brash young lovers as they light up Moscow in a brilliant flash of romance and passion.
The show will run October 24-26, and November 1-2 at 7:00 pm, as well as a matinee on October 26 at 2:00 pm in the Woodinville High School Theater.
The story follows Natasha, a beautiful ingénue visiting Moscow while she waits for her beloved fiancé Prince Andrey to return from the war. In a moment of indiscretion, she is seduced by the dashing (but already married) Anatole, resulting in the ruination of her societal position and future with Andrey. Her only hope lies with Pierre, the lonely outsider whose love and compassion for Natasha may be the key to her redemption… and to the renewal of his own soul. The musical is entirely sung, opera-style, and the WHSTC is honored to be the first High School in Washington state to be performing this show.
Tickets will go on sale October 7 at 7:30 pm via GoFan or in the WHS Cashier's Office. General Admission is $15, Seniors (65+) or students with ASB are $10. For both Saturday evening performances, there will also be VIP seats for $25.

Hello Falcons!
As we get more into the school year with classes, clubs, sports, etc. students are starting to find and make their routines and establish priorities. We encourage you to check in with your student about what's going on in their classes, homework, and how the year is starting off. Regularly, have your student open their StudentVue account and review their grades together and set goals
Here are some ways you can direct your student to gain extra support:
- Encourage them to stay after class briefly for help or to schedule a time to meet
- Help them send an e-mail to their teacher with their questions or ask to meet
- Encourage them to meet with their counselor to discuss strategies for communicating with teachers
Seniors: College application planning can be overwhelming and time consuming and we want Seniors to know we are here to support you! College Apps & Snacks will be happening throughout the fall for students wanting the counselors' help with their college applications. Come work on your applications, essays, ask your counselor questions, and have dorm-style snacks. More info available at this link.
More College application resources:
- The College Readiness and Resources page on the WHS Counseling webpage contains tons of helpful videos, resources, and links.

Social Media, Texting & Your Teen
|
A gentle reminder to continue communicating with your teen about the appropriate use of social media and electronic devices. You are encouraged to have direct conversations with your student about the impact words, texts, posts, and actions can have on each other and possibly the learning environment. When conversations outside of school begin to disrupt the learning environment behaviors on social media and cell phones may lead to consequences.
Remember the game of telephone where the message being relayed starts with one message and ends with a different message? That can happen frequently with adolescents, and the use of technology and cell phones complicates it greatly, as messages can be quickly shared, reaching many people at once.
Please continue to encourage your student to share any concerns they have, particularly if a social media post and/or text has made them feel unsafe. If they aren’t comfortable sharing directly with staff, families can always anonymously submit concerns using our Safe Schools Alert System:
Thank you for your partnership in these efforts. Together, we can keep our school environment focused on learning within a positive environment.

ATTEND A COLLEGE VISIT at WHS!
|
One of the more important opportunities available this fall is the college admissions representative visits. College admissions reps from campuses across the state and country are scheduled to visit Woodinville HS to meet with interested students. We have a huge list of colleges already on the schedule and they are very excited to meet you.
This is one of the few opportunities available to meet the person who may be reading your college application, ask questions about the particular campus, and gather helpful information to use during your college research and the admission/application process.
To see an updated list of upcoming college visits, please look at the right hand side of this webpage or go into Naviance under Colleges, College Visits!

Student Device Protection Plan
|
The Northshore School District provides each student with a district-issued technology device. When students/families assume responsibility for a district-issued device, they sign forms agreeing to accept financial responsibility for any device damage or loss. We know accidents and loss can happen. The Student Device Protection Plan provides NSD families an optional path to mitigate the financial liability of using a district device.
PARTICIPATION COST: The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.
COVERAGE AND BENEFIT: This program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or neglectful loss of the device. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair.

Passes Required for Elevator Use
|
As we start the 2024-2025 school year please note that in order to use the elevator, students are required to check out an elevator pass in the Main Office with Mrs. Benedict.
The ONLY students who should be using the elevator are students with medical conditions. If a student is seen using the elevator without a pass that has been checked out, they will receive progressive discipline.

Reminder: Report a Student’s Absence in ParentVUE
|
Attendance matters! Regular attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your student for success — both in school and in life. Students are expected to attend school every day, for the full day. But if your student misses school, all Northshore families now have an easy way to report their student’s absence using ParentVUE.
All schools in the district can now receive notifications of student absences using ParentVUE, and we encourage you to give it a try. Using ParentVUE to let your school know your student will be absent simplifies the process for our school offices and is simple for families, requiring just a handful of clicks.

Reflections is so much more than "just an art contest". It helps students be inspired, think creatively, take risks, receive positive recognition and to be celebrated for their works of art. It also allows our community to celebrate creativity in our students!
Students create their work of art and write a short artist statement based on the theme "Accepting Imperfection"; judging is based on both the artwork and artist statement in one or more of 6 different categories: visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, dance choreography, and film production.
The top entries from the 6 categories (up to 20 pieces) will have their art celebrated at a districtwide showcase in January, and may be invited to WA State or National competitions.
Submissions are due at noon Nov 22, 2024. See for more information visit our website.
