Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
|
October 24-26 and November 1-2
This Fall, the Woodinville High School Theatre Company (WHSTC) will bring the fresh-from-Broadway, electropop-opera Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 to the WHS stage. Based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s epic novel War and Peace, The Great Comet was conceived by the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy, and premiered in October 2012, at Ars Nova in New York City, under the direction of Rachel Chavkin, with Malloy in the lead role of Pierre. The production later opened on Broadway in November 2016, starring Josh Groban and Denée Benton, and was nominated for 12 awards for the 2017 Tony Awards. Inspired by a 70-page slice of War and Peace, this innovative new musical is vibrant and immersive and brings us just inches from Tolstoy’s brash young lovers as they light up Moscow in a brilliant flash of romance and passion.
The show will run October 24-26, and November 1-2 at 7:00 pm, as well as a matinee on October 26 at 2:00 pm in the Woodinville High School Theater.
The story follows Natasha, a beautiful ingénue visiting Moscow while she waits for her beloved fiancé Prince Andrey to return from the war. In a moment of indiscretion, she is seduced by the dashing (but already married) Anatole, resulting in the ruination of her societal position and future with Andrey. Her only hope lies with Pierre, the lonely outsider whose love and compassion for Natasha may be the key to her redemption… and to the renewal of his own soul. The musical is entirely sung, opera-style, and the WHSTC is honored to be the first High School in Washington state to be performing this show.
Tickets are on sale via GoFan or at the WHS Cashier's Office. General Admission is $15, Seniors (65+) or students with ASB are $10. For both Saturday evening performances, there will also be VIP seats for $25.

Costume Guidelines, Thursday, October 31
|
Costumes are allowed for the school day and at extra-curricular activities within common sense guidelines on Thursday, October 31. Please continue to be mindful that costumes should also be sensitive to our many diverse groups and be culturally appropriate. We want to have fun, but also to not have fun at anyone else's expense. We want to nurture creativity, inclusivity, and respect.
With that in mind, here are some friendly reminders and guidelines for our students about acceptable clothing that day and, really, any day:
- Cultures are not costumes
- Halloween costumes are only fun or funny when they don’t hurt or make fun of other people (in any way)
- Student costumes must be appropriate for the school workplace as outlined in the dress code in the Student Handbook
- Students must be totally identifiable at all times (this includes face paint)
- Appropriate masks for Covid are allowed
- Halloween costume masks or other face coverings not allowed
- Costumes and/or accessories are great so long as they: a) don’t portray or perpetuate stereotypes or denigrate cultures or genders, b) are not distracting to self or others, and c) do not include any weapons (or items that appear to be weapons)
Have an enjoyable, fun, and safe Halloween!

Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders: Safety First
|
Falcon Parents, Guardians, and Students,
A reminder, for everyone's safety, that dropping off or picking up students in the WHS Bus Zone is not allowed. It's imperative that this area remains clear for school bus drop off and pick up only. Bus drivers cannot see students that run across the bus zone in front of them to get into or exit a car.
Additionally, students must not cross 195th Street NE at the Bus Zone entrance. There is not a crosswalk at this location. Students should not be dropped off or picked up alongside 195th Street NE.
For drop off/pick up, please use the designated Main Office Drop-Off Loop.
Furthermore, for students that have permission to park in the 600 Building Lot, extreme caution must be used when leaving campus to not dart out of the lot in front of incoming school buses.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important safety matter.
If you should have any questions, please reach out to Campus Supervisor Shaina Bloomquist or Campus Supervisor Alan Dillman.
GO Falcons!

2024-25 Advanced Placement Testing Payment and Registration Information
|
The 2025 AP exams will cover the full content in each AP course, so students have the opportunity to receive college credit and/or placement. Every AP student should keep their options open by registering for the exam on time because there will still be a $42 fee for late orders. The College Board will support in-school testing in 2024 because administering exams in schools maximizes access and opportunity. If safety concerns still prohibit any students from testing at a school, the College Board will provide a contingency testing option that contains full course content.
Students - Create a College Board Account: Students will need a College Board account to join their AP class section, receive AP assignments from teachers, get feedback on class progress, and register for AP exams (note: parents should not create an account for the student). If you don’t have a student account, go to www.collegeboard.org/register.
Already Have a College Board Account? All College Board programs are connected through one account. If an account was created for AP, PSAT/NMSQT or SAT, you just need your username and password to sign in.
|
|
|
|
|
Advanced Placement Exam Registration & Payment is a two-step process (Both parts must be completed for each AP exam to be registered, ordered, and paid for).
-
STEP 1: Students will need to login or create a College Board account via myap.collegeboard.org. Students will also need a “join code” to join a class section. Note: An exam cannot be ordered for you until you complete Step 1! Students do not need to be enrolled in an AP course to take an AP exam. If you want to take an AP exam and are not enrolled in an AP course, you will still need a join code to register, order, and pay for an exam. Please contact AP Coordinator Andrea Baleva abaleva@nsd.org to get a join code issued.
-
STEP 2: Students will PAY for their AP exam fees via www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/481598 Note: An exam cannot be fully ordered and paid for you until you complete Step 1! (The College Board does not accept payment when registering for an AP exam so we have to use a second party to accept and track exam payment.)
IMPORTANT DEADLINES AND INFORMATION
- AP Registration Deadline: November 15, 2024
- It is recommended that students use their Northshore email account (@apps.nsd.org) when registering for both Total Registration and the College Board. Failure to use the same NSD email on both sites may cause a student to not get the correct AP exam.
- AP exams will cost $108.00 (AP Seminar and AP Research are $148.00).
- Late registration fee mandated by College Board: Students may register for an AP exam AFTER November 15th, 2024 and up until March 7th, 2025, but will have to pay an additional $42 per exam late order fee.
- Any students who qualify for Free & Reduced Lunch are eligible for a fee waiver and will not have to pay for an AP exam.

Hello Falcons!
As we get more into the school year with classes, clubs, sports, etc. students are starting to find and make their routines and establish priorities. We encourage you to check in with your student about what's going on in their classes, homework, and how the year is starting off. Regularly, have your student open their StudentVue account and review their grades together and set goals
Here are some ways you can direct your student to gain extra support:
- Encourage them to stay after class briefly for help or to schedule a time to meet
- Help them send an e-mail to their teacher with their questions or ask to meet
- Encourage them to meet with their counselor to discuss strategies for communicating with teachers
Seniors: College application planning can be overwhelming and time consuming and we want Seniors to know we are here to support you! College Apps & Snacks will be happening throughout the fall for students wanting the counselors' help with their college applications. Come work on your applications, essays, ask your counselor questions, and have dorm-style snacks. More info available at this link.
More College application resources:
- The College Readiness and Resources page on the WHS Counseling webpage contains tons of helpful videos, resources, and links.
- We created the WHS Senior Handbook to guide students through their senior year. Check it out!
- The WHS School Profile is now available at this link
- The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is scheduled to open in December. All students applying to college will need to complete the FAFSA for the 2024-2025 school year.

Social Media, Texting & Your Teen
|
A gentle reminder to continue communicating with your teen about the appropriate use of social media and electronic devices. You are encouraged to have direct conversations with your student about the impact words, texts, posts, and actions can have on each other and possibly the learning environment. When conversations outside of school begin to disrupt the learning environment behaviors on social media and cell phones may lead to consequences.
Remember the game of telephone where the message being relayed starts with one message and ends with a different message? That can happen frequently with adolescents, and the use of technology and cell phones complicates it greatly, as messages can be quickly shared, reaching many people at once.
Please continue to encourage your student to share any concerns they have, particularly if a social media post and/or text has made them feel unsafe. If they aren’t comfortable sharing directly with staff, families can always anonymously submit concerns using our Safe Schools Alert System:
Thank you for your partnership in these efforts. Together, we can keep our school environment focused on learning within a positive environment.

ATTEND A COLLEGE VISIT at WHS!
|
One of the more important opportunities available this fall is the college admissions representative visits. College admissions reps from campuses across the state and country are scheduled to visit Woodinville HS to meet with interested students. We have a huge list of colleges already on the schedule and they are very excited to meet you.
This is one of the few opportunities available to meet the person who may be reading your college application, ask questions about the particular campus, and gather helpful information to use during your college research and the admission/application process.
To see an updated list of upcoming college visits, please look at the right hand side of this webpage or go into Naviance under Colleges, College Visits!

Digital Citizenship Week with Common Sense Media
|
Last week (October 14-18) the library celebrated Digital Citizenship Week with Common Sense Media. Common Sense has chosen a theme for each day, and we have created slides to use as conversation starters around those themes. (The QR codes in the slides are also links you can click on.)
Here are the themes and some questions you could use to have a conversation with your teen about them:
Monday: Bias in AI
- What do you know about how AI is “trained”? What is “training data”?
- Have you encountered any examples of bias in your use of AI?
Tuesday: Digital Wellbeing (What is social media’s impact on the pressures teens feel?)
- Which of these pressures (on the slide) resonate with you?
- Which of these pressures is intensified for you by social media?
Wednesday: School Cell Phone Bans
- How are your teachers dealing with cell phones?
- Do you notice a difference for yourself or others when cell phones are kept put away?
Thursday: AI and Elections (What impact could deepfakes have?)
- Do you know what deepfakes are?
- What do you think is the danger of them related to elections?
Friday: Positive Relationships (What positive and negative impacts does our digital world have on our
relationships?)
- How do you think your friendships are affected by how digitally connected you are?
- What boundaries keep you from being overwhelmed/stressed by the constant contact you can have with friends and acquaintances?
We hope this will spur some good conversations at home and who knows, your teen may just be able to teach you a thing or two!

Student Device Protection Plan
|
The Northshore School District provides each student with a district-issued technology device. When students/families assume responsibility for a district-issued device, they sign forms agreeing to accept financial responsibility for any device damage or loss. We know accidents and loss can happen. The Student Device Protection Plan provides NSD families an optional path to mitigate the financial liability of using a district device.
PARTICIPATION COST: The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.
COVERAGE AND BENEFIT: This program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or neglectful loss of the device. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair.

Passes Required for Elevator Use
|
As we start the 2024-2025 school year please note that in order to use the elevator, students are required to check out an elevator pass in the Main Office with Mrs. Benedict.
The ONLY students who should be using the elevator are students with medical conditions. If a student is seen using the elevator without a pass that has been checked out, they will receive progressive discipline.

Reminder: Report a Student’s Absence in ParentVUE
|
Attendance matters! Regular attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your student for success — both in school and in life. Students are expected to attend school every day, for the full day. But if your student misses school, all Northshore families now have an easy way to report their student’s absence using ParentVUE.
All schools in the district can now receive notifications of student absences using ParentVUE, and we encourage you to give it a try. Using ParentVUE to let your school know your student will be absent simplifies the process for our school offices and is simple for families, requiring just a handful of clicks.

We need DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras, preferably Canon or Nikon, and automatic SLR film cameras, preferably made after 2000. We also need SD cards, as they disappear each year, so we'd also take any extra ones that folks have lying around.
Please send cameras and/or SD cards to the school and bring them to the office, where we will collect them. Last day to donate cameras or SD cards is 10/31.

Reflections is so much more than "just an art contest". It helps students be inspired, think creatively, take risks, receive positive recognition and to be celebrated for their works of art. It also allows our community to celebrate creativity in our students!
Students create their work of art and write a short artist statement based on the theme "Accepting Imperfection"; judging is based on both the artwork and artist statement in one or more of 6 different categories: visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, dance choreography, and film production.
The top entries from the 6 categories (up to 20 pieces) will have their art celebrated at a districtwide showcase in January, and may be invited to WA State or National competitions.
Submissions are due at noon Nov 22, 2024. See for more information visit our website.
