women of influence panel
The Women of Influence (WOI) Club are having several Woodinville/WOI alumni speakers come in Wednesday, December 18 after school in the library to speak to students about their college experience and what being an influential woman in their field has looked like so far, etc. We have a series of questions that are being asked, similar to our end of year conference but in a more informal setting! It costs $5 to come to the event so students can either bring cash or pay through GoFan.

Freshmen Device Swap - Monday, Dec 16
On Monday, December 16th, NSD Technology Department will be conducting a device swap for all 9th graders at WHS. This will take place in our library during the students’ specific time slot in their English class. The times have been arranged with the English department already. Your 9th grade student(s) are required to bring their assigned Chromebook to school and exchange it for a new Chromebook. Charger and bag will not be exchanged. Their current charger and bag will work with the new device.

To prepare for the swap, please ask your students to:
  1. Carefully remove any stickers, tape, or other personal items from the Chromebook.
  2. Log out of the Chromebook.
  3. Be sure that the Chromebook is the one assigned to them and not to a friend or sibling. Check with the School Technology Specialist in the Library to confirm if they are unsure.
  4. Note any problems with their assigned Chromebook? Ask your students to report those problems to the School Technology Specialist as soon as possible.

In order to support a smooth device swap, please remind your 9th grader to bring their Chromebooks to school on Monday, December 16th.

Reminder From the Attendance Office
Attendance News: Unexcused Absences/Truancies Reminder
A student’s absence is considered unexcused (truant) when it is without parent/guardian consent.
  • Truancies will result in the assignment of consequences (i.e., detention, Saturday School, suspension).
  • Truancies will result in loss of credit for assignments and/or performance on the day of the truancy.
  • If a student has three (3) or more days of unexcused absences, regardless of total number of absences, a conference with administration is needed.
The complete WHS Attendance Policy can be found on the WHS website under Resources, Attendance, Attendance Policy and in the WHS Student Handbook on page 21.

WA State PTSA Essay Contest
The Washington State essay contest explores the important and varied influencers in the lives and education of children - from the children's perspective.

Every day childen are exposed to a variety of people and each one has an opportunity to influence the path a child decides to take. Whether it is someone that sparks an interest in a new topic, helps them work through a problem, shapes the kind of person they want to become by modeling behavior, simply listens to them, or any number of other actions, this is the platform for students to share their appreciation.

To help celebrate the people that are most important in influencing the lives of children around the state of Washington, the objective of this contest is for students of all ages and abilities to write an essay about an influential role model that has had a profound impact on their life. The influential role model must be a real person that the student has interaced with, not a fictional character. These essays, from the students' perspectives, will serve to inspire and acknowledge amazing individuals. The essay must be no more than 650 works. The application deadline is February 13, 2025.

Student Device Protection Plan
The Northshore School District provides each student with a district-issued technology device. When students/families assume responsibility for a district-issued device, they sign forms agreeing to accept financial responsibility for any device damage or loss. We know accidents and loss can happen. The Student Device Protection Plan provides NSD families an optional path to mitigate the financial liability of using a district device.

PARTICIPATION COST: The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.

COVERAGE AND BENEFIT: This program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or neglectful loss of the device. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair.

Supportive Resources for the Holiday Season
The holiday season can bring a mix of emotions—while it’s often a time for celebration, it can also amplify feelings of stress, loneliness, or grief, especially for those facing challenges or losses. It's important to remember that it's okay to not feel joyful all the time, and asking for help or finding support during difficult moments is not a sign of weakness, but rather a step toward healing and self-care.

Whether it's reaching out to a loved one, talking to a professional, or simply giving yourself permission to take a break, there are ways to ease the burden. You're never alone in these feelings, and there’s always support available, even if it’s not immediately visible. If you're in a tough spot, you don't have to navigate it by yourself.

Here are some available resources available:
  1. Call if experiencing loneliness, Anxiety, Depression, problems with family or friends, and any other emotional and mental health needs: toll free 877-500-9276HOURS MON-SUN 9am-10pm
  2. Teen Link (Call/Text): toll free 866-833-6546 , HOURS SUN-SAT 6pm-10pm
  3. If you or someone you know has experienced sexual abuse, please call the 24/7 sexual assault hotline at: 1800-656-4673

Additional resources can be found on the WHS Counseling website.

Speech and Debate Racking up State Bids!
Our Speech and Debate kids competed in the Bellevue SD tournament on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7. This was another excellent tournament for us!

The Bellevue tournament was a huge tournament with more entries in each event and thus was more competitive. We now have four students on the board with state bids! Here are the results:

  1. Ian Miller - 2nd place in Open Lincoln Douglas debate and a state bid!
  2. Mohammad Kazmi - 4th place in Open Lincoln Douglas debate and a state bid!
  3. Donovan Cheng - 1st place (for the second tournament in a row!) in Spontaneous argument
  4. Guy O'Connell - 4th place in Spontaneous Argument (this is the second tournament in a row where Guy made it to finals!)

Guy O'Connell and Eshaan Chowdhry had more challenging opponents for this tournament since they have a state bid on the board. In their first round, they went against the Overlake team they lost to in our last tournament in the semifinals round. They came out of that round victorious! This was a major win for them, because the win was against a team who had three state bids going into this tournament.

Please also congratulate Emiliano Trejo and Evenne Burgess (Novice Public Forum debate), Shaan Paracha (Novice Lincoln Douglas debate), Anirudh Deval (Open Lincoln Douglas debate), Musa Ali (Open Lincoln Douglas debate), and Donovan Cheng and Will Klein (Open Public Forum debate). All of these students competed in challenging rounds this weekend and did well!

Akebi High School Student Visit!
Twenty-two students from Akebi High School located in Hokkaido, Japan visited WHS on Monday, December 9! They were accompanied by Assistant Principal Hiroko Kanehira. The students shadowed the WHS students' 1st through 3rd periods, then during 4th period students from Akebi High School presented to the WHS students about Japanese school life and culture. The Akebi students also introduced a Japanese game to play with the entire class, followed by a pizza party to enjoy the last get together before they had to take off. It was a quick trip, but the all the students had a great time before the Akebi students had to depart out on a bus to head to Vancouver, BC on Monday, the 9th. Many thanks to everyone for accommodating this wonderful opportunity and to Mizue Sunahara and our Japanese program families for supporting the arrangements!
