District Attendance Process Change: Morning & Evening Notifications

To better ensure student safety by communicating absences earlier to secondary families, starting Tuesday, January 28 if parents/guardians do not notify the attendance office of their student’s absence or late arrival, parents/guardians can expect to receive notifications from the district alerting them in the morning and or evening. This District process change is for your student’s safety and to ensure our records are accurate.

Please note it does take time for our attendance secretary to reconcile families’ reporting within our attendance system, and we appreciate your patience:

  • If you have reported your student’s absence to the attendance office in the morning (or the evening before) and receive a morning attendance notification, please disregard the message as multiple attendance notifications from parents/guardians slows down the reconciliation process.
  • Our attendance secretary will be making every effort to record and reconcile all incoming absence notifications as quickly as possible before the morning notification is sent.

Thank you for your diligence in promoting and encouraging your student’s regular, punctual attendance and please remember to let our school know when your student is absent:
Report an Absence in 4 Simple Steps

While we know regular attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare your student for success, we also know that sometimes students must miss school for a variety of reasons. Next time that happens for your family, let our attendance office know through ParentVUE:
1.    Login to ParentVUE*
2.    Click the “Report Absence” button next to the name of your absent student
3.    Fill in the fields with the date(s) of the absence and provide an explanation
  • For example, describe if it is a full-day absence or if leaving early or arriving late, provide a specific time
4.    Click to submit, automatically notifying the school of the absence

Learn more or view step-by-step images and instructions. You can use this method to report an absence of up to 4 days. As a reminder, an absence of 5 days or longer requires families to submit a Notice of Pre-Arranged Extended Absence Form.

You can support your student and our attendance office in these changes by using ParentVUE to make attendance notifications as early as possible.

*Need to Set Up ParentVUE?

If you have not yet requested a ParentVUE account, request a 7-digit activation key from our attendance office. The ParentVUE app is also available for mobile phones on Google Play or the App Store. See below for more information about the ParentVUE Mobile App.

School Closure Make-up Days

This school year, we have experienced weather-related school closures on multiple days, and there is the possibility of additional school delays or closures still to come this school year. The 2024-25 calendar includes the emergency make-up days to help families prepare in advance. Please keep in mind the potential for additional make-up days as your family considers summer activities. The final version of the 2024-25 one-page family calendar will be communicated by the District in March.

Safe Schools Reminder

The beginning of a new year provides a good opportunity to remind students and families of our commitment to student, family, and staff safety, as well as avenues available if you or your student has concerns you wish to share with us. Our school works closely in collaboration with law enforcement, District Safety and Security, and District administrators to ensure your concerns are taken seriously and are addressed promptly. We must be vigilant in the protection of our school community, and we value and appreciate our partnership with you. We can't do it alone.

If you or your student sees or hears something concerning, please say something. If at any time you or your student believes you have knowledge of any situation where danger is imminent, dial 911 immediately.  And please continue to encourage your student to share any concerns with a trusted staff member. If they aren’t comfortable sharing directly with staff, concerns can always be anonymously submitted using our Safe Schools Alert System:

Student Device Protection Plan

The Northshore School District provides each student with a district-issued technology device. When students/families assume responsibility for a district-issued device, they sign forms agreeing to accept financial responsibility for any device damage or loss. We know accidents and loss can happen. The Student Device Protection Plan provides NSD families an optional path to mitigate the financial liability of using a district device.

PARTICIPATION COST: The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.

COVERAGE AND BENEFIT: This program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or neglectful loss of the device. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair.

WANIC Way-2-Be Award

WANIC Student Recognition!

The faculty and staff of the Washington Network of Innovative Careers (WANIC) Skill Center recently celebrated several students in a student recognition assembly, including WHS students:
  • Vaishnavi Jutta in WANIC’s Dental Careers program
  • Bernices Paco in WANIC’s Medical Careers program
Vaishnavi and Bernices were identified by their classmates and instructors for demonstrating many of the characteristics reflective of the ‘WANIC Way’ expectations within the setting of their career and technical education (CTE) classroom during Semester 1 of this 2024-25 academic year. The "WANIC Way" encompasses four positive behavioral expectations: Be Safe. Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Be Present. The WANIC Way also emphasizes seven characteristics: attitude, reliability, responsibility, professionalism, initiative, respect, and integrity. At the forefront is the value placed on students showing up every day, on time, prepared to participate in class, contribute to a positive culture, and ready to reap the rewards of personal growth, academic achievement, and a sense of accomplishment. More information on The WANIC Way can be found here https://wanic.lwsd.org/students-and-families/wanic-way

The students also earned the ‘WAY-2-Be' certificate reflecting ongoing efforts in their pursuit to demonstrate workplace expectations in preparation toward becoming a ‘highly sought out candidate’ for any career pathway of their choice.

Congratulations to Vaishnavi and Bernices!

Woodinville High School Robotics

The Velocity Raptors 9450 had an outstanding performance at the Glacier Peak competition to start the REEFscape season. The team finished as finalist alliance captains and secured the Creativity Award. The team played 12 qualification matches against 33 high schools, finishing with a strong 10-2 record and qualifying as the #2 seed for playoffs. As alliance captains, they selected Sonic Squirrels 2930 and Robocotopi 4193 to compete alongside them. The alliance fought through the playoffs and reached the finals but ultimately finished 2nd overall.

With their impressive performance, the team has secured a spot at the regional championships at Eastern Washington University in April, where they will compete for a chance to qualify for the World Championships in Houston. Currently, the team is ranked 81st in the world, 4th in the Washington/Oregon region, and 63rd in the U.S., placing them in the 99th percentile globally.

In two weeks, the team will travel to Yakima to compete in their second event with hopes to secure more points towards a world championship qualification!

Pictured is the Northshore Alliance featuring Woodinville and Bothell's robotics programs after their great weekend. We have been assisting and mentoring Bothell's students this season as it is their rookie season in FRC.
