Report an Absence in 4 Simple Steps

While we know regular attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare your student for success, we also know that sometimes students must miss school for a variety of reasons. Next time that happens for your family, let our attendance office know through ParentVUE:
1.    Login to ParentVUE*
2.    Click the “Report Absence” button next to the name of your absent student
3.    Fill in the fields with the date(s) of the absence and provide an explanation
  • For example, describe if it is a full-day absence or if leaving early or arriving late, provide a specific time
4.    Click to submit, automatically notifying the school of the absence

Learn more or view step-by-step images and instructions. You can use this method to report an absence of up to 4 days. As a reminder, an absence of 5 days or longer requires families to submit a Notice of Pre-Arranged Extended Absence Form.

You can support your student and our attendance office in these changes by using ParentVUE to make attendance notifications as early as possible.

*Need to Set Up ParentVUE?

If you have not yet requested a ParentVUE account, request a 7-digit activation key from our attendance office. The ParentVUE app is also available for mobile phones on Google Play or the App Store. See below for more information about the ParentVUE Mobile App.

2024-25 School Year Calendar: Update on School Closure Make-up Days to be advised by District in April

This school year, we have already experienced weather-related school closures on four days, and there remains a possibility of additional school delays or closures still to come this school year. The 2024-25 calendar includes emergency make-up days to help families prepare in advance. Please keep in mind as your family considers summer activities that the 2024-25 calendar includes emergency make-up days, and any additional days will be added to the end of the school year. The final version of the 2024-25 one-page family calendar will be communicated in April. (NSD Connections Newsletter 3/10/25)

Safe Schools Reminder

The beginning of a new year provides a good opportunity to remind students and families of our commitment to student, family, and staff safety, as well as avenues available if you or your student has concerns you wish to share with us. Our school works closely in collaboration with law enforcement, District Safety and Security, and District administrators to ensure your concerns are taken seriously and are addressed promptly. We must be vigilant in the protection of our school community, and we value and appreciate our partnership with you. We can't do it alone.

If you or your student sees or hears something concerning, please say something. If at any time you or your student believes you have knowledge of any situation where danger is imminent, dial 911 immediately.  And please continue to encourage your student to share any concerns with a trusted staff member. If they aren’t comfortable sharing directly with staff, concerns can always be anonymously submitted using our Safe Schools Alert System:

Student Device Protection Plan

The Northshore School District provides each student with a district-issued technology device. When students/families assume responsibility for a district-issued device, they sign forms agreeing to accept financial responsibility for any device damage or loss. We know accidents and loss can happen. The Student Device Protection Plan provides NSD families an optional path to mitigate the financial liability of using a district device.

PARTICIPATION COST: The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.

COVERAGE AND BENEFIT: This program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or neglectful loss of the device. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair.

WHS Robotics Breaks Records!

The Velocity Raptors Team 9450 competed in Yakima at the Pacific Northwest FIRST District Sun Dome Event with huge success, achieving both an undefeated season and winning the IMPACT Award. The IMPACT Award is an extraordinary achievement, especially for a second-year team. Historically, this award is won by teams with years of outreach, but we made history by achieving both an undefeated season and an IMPACT Award win in just our second year — a feat never accomplished before in the 25-year history of FIRST Robotics.

The FIRST IMPACT Award is the most prestigious award in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). It recognizes a team that has made a significant and measurable impact on their community through outreach, advocacy, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiatives.

Winning this award is not just about building a successful robot; it celebrates a team's commitment to inspiring others and spreading the values of FIRST. Teams that receive the IMPACT Award demonstrate exceptional efforts in encouraging young people to engage in STEM, mentoring other teams, creating sustainable programs, and making a lasting difference in their communities.
Next up, Robotics heads to Cheney, Washington, to compete at Eastern Washington University. With a spot at the World Championships on the line and currently tied for first. Congratulations Robotics!

The team shown below includes: Joel Liao, Elijah Yan, Dasha Arkipova, Davis Tonkin, Kevin Check, Neha Modi, Elizabeth Stevenson, Brayden Jozwiak, Mark Tyomkin, Tucker Taplett, Woojin Kim, Ryan Kitzan, Skylar Bogner, Ethan Tonkin, Riker Charlson, Curtney Huang, Cindy Liang, Romi Bar-Caspi, and Max Song.

Junior Cooper Brix Selected for Young People’s Continental Congress

This July, WHS junior Cooper Brix will travel to Philadelphia, along with LMS teacher Kathleen Hartman, as the only delegation from Washington selected to participate in the second annual Young People’s Continental Congress. In addition to completing online learning modules throughout spring 2025 about subjects such as the Continental Congress, the Boston Massacre, and economic liberty in Colonial America, Cooper's delegation will join 26 other teacher-student teams in Philadelphia for a week of special programming and field learning opportunities at sites such as Carpenters’ Hall, Independence National Historical Park, the National Constitution Center, the Museum of the American Revolution, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Delegates will also co-create and sign a joint declaration of their aspirations for American democracy, just as their historical counterparts issued the Declaration of Colonial Rights and the Declaration of Independence. Delegations were selected for this opportunity by National History Day and Carpenters’ Hall, the home of the nation’s First Continental Congress in 1774. Congratulations to Cooper for earning this exciting opportunity!

ASL night out

ASL Night Out

In late February, more than 100 ASL students from around the district gathered for their third "ASL Night Out" of the year at Inglemoor High School. Students came together to spend two hours in an immersive environment, using ASL to navigate real-life interactions, including introductions, games, and challenges. This event was revived after COVID and rotates around the District so all high schools can take turns hosting. Students invite friends and alumni to join the events, reconnect with friends, and build community at other schools.

Thank you to the ASL team for your collaboration and care for your students: Richard "RJ" Jacobs, Dr. Stacey Hutchison, Andy Gault, Jessica Cooper, RJ Harris, Sarah Campbell, and Nicole Skorupa.
