transition into summer kit

Transition into Summer Kit

As the school year wraps up, students and families may face challenges during the shift into summer. To support your community, we’ve created a Transition into Summer Kit—a ready-to-use resource designed to guide families through a healthy, intentional transition.
Families can access the following worksheets:
  • Summer Tips for Families: To aid the transition into summer.
  • Summer Intention Setting: A guided activity to help families foster purpose and joy.
  • Healthy Summer Habits: Tips on screen time, stress, and routine to encourage balance.
  • How to Find a therapist: A guide to accessing support through the summer months.
As the school year winds down, many families breathe a collective sigh of relief. The pressure of schedules, assignments, and daily routines begins to ease. However, the transition into summer can also bring its own set of emotional and mental health challenges. Shifts in routine, less structure, and increased family time (or lack of connection, depending on circumstances) can affect everyone's well-being in different ways.

Here are some therapist-approved tips to help students and families prioritize mental health during the summer months:
1. Keep a Healthy Routine (Without Over-Scheduling)
Having some predictable structure can be very grounding—especially for teens. Try to maintain consistent wake-up times, meal routines, and bedtimes. A loose daily plan that includes physical and social activities, as well as relaxation, can prevent the feeling of aimlessness that sometimes contributes to low mood or anxiety.
2. Prioritize Sleep
Sleep schedules often get disrupted over summer break. However, sleep remains critical for mental and emotional regulation at every age. Aim for 8–10 hours of sleep for teens. Create tech-free wind-down time in the evenings an hour before bedtime.
3. Build in Meaningful Screen Breaks
With more free time, screen usage tends to spike—sometimes at the expense of real-world connection and mental health. Encourage “tech-free” blocks during the day, especially in the morning and before bed. Use this time to engage in offline activities like reading, board games, or going for a walk together.
5. Get Outside—Daily if Possible
Nature has a powerful impact on mental health. Even short walks, outdoor play, or sitting in a green space can reduce stress and improve mood. Make it a family/individual  priority to spend some time outside every day—even if it’s just for 15 minutes.
6. Make Time for Connection
For some students, school is their main source of social contact. Families can help by encouraging social interactions through in person ‘hang outs’, camps, or community events. At the same time, build in regular family connection time—meals together, movie nights, or even shared chores can foster closeness.
8. Support Transitions and Emotions
Some students may be feeling anxious about upcoming changes—like starting a new school, moving, or just transitioning grades. Validate those feelings. Offer space to talk about worries and remind them that it’s okay not to have all the answers. Change often brings discomfort, and that discomfort doesn’t mean something is wrong—it just means something new is happening.
9. Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Support
Just because its summer doesn’t mean mental health concerns go on vacation. If your child or teen is showing signs of depression, anxiety, or emotional distress—such as persistent irritability, withdrawal, changes in sleep or appetite, or talk of self-harm—reach out to a mental health professional. Early support can make a significant difference.

A Final Thought:
Summer is a unique opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and reset. By weaving in simple mental health practices, families can help teens build emotional resilience—not just for the summer, but for life. The most important is to create a sense of safety, acceptance, and support within the home. That’s where well-being begins.

College Planning Resources

Juniors, spring is a great time to start planning for life after high school. While we don't expect you to have your plans set in stone, we do encourage you to start thinking about what your path might look like after graduation.
  • Check out our website for college planning resources.
  • Log into your Naviance account to utilize the Super-Match College Search engine to research colleges.
  • Check out some college campuses (in person or virtually: https://campustours.com/)
  • Use Naviance to organize colleges you're interested in using the "Colleges I am Thinking About" tool.
  • Research college admission requirements, for example: will you need to ask a teacher to write a letter of recommendation for you?
  • While some colleges are waiving the testing expectation for admission, you still may want to sign up to take the ACT or SAT.
  • Counselors are looking forward to collaborating more with you around the college admission process this spring, but do not hesitate to reach out with any questions in the meantime!

Report an Absence in 4 Simple Steps

While we know regular attendance is one of the most powerful ways to prepare your student for success, we also know that sometimes students must miss school for a variety of reasons. Next time that happens for your family, let our attendance office know through ParentVUE:
1.    Login to ParentVUE*
2.    Click the “Report Absence” button next to the name of your absent student
3.    Fill in the fields with the date(s) of the absence and provide an explanation
  • For example, describe if it is a full-day absence or if leaving early or arriving late, provide a specific time
4.    Click to submit, automatically notifying the school of the absence

Learn more or view step-by-step images and instructions. You can use this method to report an absence of up to 4 days. As a reminder, an absence of 5 days or longer requires families to submit a Notice of Pre-Arranged Extended Absence Form.

You can support your student and our attendance office in these changes by using ParentVUE to make attendance notifications as early as possible.

*Need to Set Up ParentVUE?

If you have not yet requested a ParentVUE account, request a 7-digit activation key from our attendance office. The ParentVUE app is also available for mobile phones on Google Play or the App Store. See below for more information about the ParentVUE Mobile App.

2024-25 School Year Calendar Update: Last Day of School is June 20, 2025

Last week, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction informed Northshore that the requested waiver for two inclement weather days was approved.
  • Northshore's updated last day of school for K-11th grade students is Friday, June 20, which will be a partial day. (WHS will operate on Last Student Day Schedule #28.)
  • Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18 will be full days of school.
  • As a reminder, June 19 is a holiday (Juneteenth), and schools are closed.

Dismissal times for the last day of school, June 20, are listed on Start and Dismissal Times webpage.

Because Northshore schools were closed for weather-related issues for a number of days this winter, we have not met our state-required instructional hours. This means that instructional hours will need to be made up on two Wednesdays that were previously scheduled to be Early Release Wednesdays: April 30 and May 7. These two days – April 30 and May 7 – are now full days of school.

Revised one-page family calendars are posted to the district website. These updated calendars are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Hindi, Chinese - simplified, and Chinese - traditional.

Student Device Protection Plan

The Northshore School District provides each student with a district-issued technology device. When students/families assume responsibility for a district-issued device, they sign forms agreeing to accept financial responsibility for any device damage or loss. We know accidents and loss can happen. The Student Device Protection Plan provides NSD families an optional path to mitigate the financial liability of using a district device.

PARTICIPATION COST: The standard payment to enroll in the NSD Student Device Protection Plan is $25 per year; free for students who have qualified for free or reduced-price meals and who have provided consent to share their status for fee waivers. No refunds will be given once enrolled in this program.

COVERAGE AND BENEFIT: This program covers the device (Chromebook, Macbook, or iPad) loaned to your student against accidental damage for the school year. This program does NOT cover damage resulting from misuse or neglectful loss of the device. We expect all students to properly use their device and to secure it when it is not being used. If the device is used improperly or is not secured while the student is not using it, families will be expected to pay the full cost of replacement or repair.

WHS Seniors Sophie Bagley and Amogh Patil earn C.P. & Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Award!

The C.P. & Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Award was established in honor of two educators who dedicated their lives to improving the lives of all children in our community. As part of this honor, NSD recognizes two students from each school who display the characteristics of a humanitarian in their school and community. Recipients of the C.P. & Dorothy Johnson Humanitarian Award consistently demonstrate value and dignity of others, treat others with respect, and promote the common good. Recipients were selected based on three criteria: Acceptance, Community, & Advocacy. This year's WHS awards were earned by seniors Sophie Bagley and Amogh Patil!

Sophie transferred here as a sophomore from Arizona and quickly found her place, joining ASB in her junior year. She played a key role in welcoming new students through the “transfer student” orientation and is known for her warm, inclusive nature. Sophie is creative and kind-hearted, she naturally connects with those who are new or on the fringes. She’s also involved in various clubs and charitable efforts, reflecting her generous spirit and positive energy. Sophie is truly an asset to our school community.

hAmogh is widely recognized as a servant leader within our school community. He is a highly motivated student who values inclusivity, integrity, and above all, a strong sense of community. He has contributed meaningfully through his role in ASB leadership and as an active participant in our drama and theater program. What stands out most about Amogh is his ability to stay deeply involved in extracurricular activities while maintaining an impressive 3.971 GPA—something he takes great pride in.

Congratulations to Sophie and Amogh on this honor!
