October 31st Newsletter In this edition of the Newsletter you will find: Note From the Principal Picture Day Retakes Conference Schedule Veteran's Day Assmebly Note From the School Counselor Library News Health Room News Music News Student Technology Frank Love PTA Note from the Principal Dear Frank Love Families, A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of presenting to the School Board. Board members, our superintendent, and district administrators spent time at Frank Love learning about the great work we’re doing to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. They visited classrooms and met with 2nd–5th grade students for a roundtable discussion. I shared the steady progress our students are making in mathematics and how teachers are enhancing instruction through student-led practice and routines that strengthen foundational skills. These efforts are building students’ confidence in tackling more complex problems. I also highlighted the amazing work our school has done around inclusive practices—ensuring all students, no matter their learning needs, have meaningful access to learning with their peers. We’re so proud of the authentic friendships and understanding that have grown among students as they learn that differences are something to celebrate. Thank you for your ongoing support and for being such an important part of the Frank Love community. Your presence and encouragement make a big difference! Have a wonderful weekend and for those of you who will be trick or treating, fingers crossed for a light rain tonight! Warmly, Katy French, Principal Picture Day Retakes If your student missed picture day they will have a chance for retakes on Tuesday, November 4th. Friday Newsletter 10.24.25
Friday, October 24th This week we have some information about: Day of Changes Attendance Reminders Halloween Reminder Frank Love PTA Day of Changes Please remember that our teachers are focused on instruction throughout the day and may not be able to check messages regularly. If you have a time-sensitive message for your child or their teacher, we kindly ask that you call the Frank Love main office directly. This helps us ensure your message is delivered promptly. To help us manage end-of-day communications smoothly, we ask that all messages or changes to your child’s way home be communicated to the office by 2:40 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and by 1:30 PM on Wednesdays whenever possible. Messages received after these times may not be guaranteed for delivery, especially if other urgent matters arise. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation! Attendance Reminders Absences We’ve had a challenging start to the school year when it comes to attendance. In just the first 38 days, we've recorded a total of 1,903 absences —an average of 50 students absent each day. That means approximately **9% of our student body is missing valuable instructional time daily. We understand that cold and flu season is in full swing, and illness has been widespread in our community. We truly appreciate your efforts to keep sick children home to help prevent the spread of illness. If your child is out for multiple days, we encourage you to consider a visit to your healthcare provider. Doctor’s notes can be emailed directly to frankloveattendance@nsd.org Regular attendance is essential for academic success. The Northshore School District’s Board Policy 3122 outlines valid reasons for excused absences. Additionally, RCW 28A.225.010 states that excused absences may not be permitted if they significantly impact a student’s educational progress, unless there is documented evidence that the student is physically or mentally unable to attend school. Starting in November, families will receive a letter and be invited to a meeting if their student has: 3 or more unexcused absences in a month, or 5 or more excused absences in a month We are here to support your child’s learning and well-being. If you have questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Tardies We’ve noticed a concerning trend with student tardiness this school year. On average, 18 students arrive late each day, with our highest day reaching 33 late arrivals . As a reminder, our school day now begins at 9:00 AM. Any student arriving after that time is considered tardy . Being on time is essential for a smooth start to the day. When students arrive late unexpectedly, it can disrupt classroom routines and impact not only their own learning but also the flow of the class. Many teachers begin the day with important routines that help build classroom community and set the tone for learning. Students who miss these moments may feel out of sync with their peers. Here are some helpful tips to support timely arrivals: Prepare the night before : lay out clothes, pack lunch, and organize homework. Establish a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine . Use visual timers to keep mornings on track. Keep breakfast simple or take advantage of breakfast at school. Build in buffer time for unexpected delays like traffic or emotional transitions. Shift wake-up and bedtime schedules if mornings feel rushed. Arrive early: the Frank Love Library opens at 8:35 AM for students who arrive ahead of time. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s success. A strong start to the day helps set the stage for a positive and productive learning experience! Halloween Reminder A reminder that Halloween (including costumes) is not celebrated during the school day at Frank Love . While many view Halloween as a fun, candy-filled holiday, not all families in our school community participate in it. Because our goal is to create an inclusive environment where every student feels welcome, we do not celebrate Halloween at school. If your family chooses to celebrate outside of the school day, we wish you a happy and safe time together. October 17th Newsletter
October 17th Newsletter In this edition of the Newsletter you will find: Note From the Principal Halloween Reminder Note From the School Counselor Library News Health Room News Student Technology Frank Love PTA Note from the Principal Dear Frank Love Families, Fall is a time when we focus on safety. Last week our staff practiced the reunification process , which prepares us to reunite students with families in case of a weather event or emergency requiring them to stay at school longer. Yesterday, we participated in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill . These monthly drills are just one way we ensure the safety of our students and staff. After School Activities I want to give a big shout-out to our PTA for coordinating and hosting after-school activities for our students. These enriching classes take a lot of work to organize, and our students truly enjoy them. I’d also like to recognize our Cross-Country coaches, Mr. D and Mrs. Rietz , for their dedication in coaching our 3–5 grade students this season. Note from the School Counselor Hello Families, We are excited for our bullying prevention play on October 22! We will have Taproot Theater come to lead a production of the play Pets which focuses on bullying prevention. Ahead of this production, I will be focusing on bullying prevention lessons in grades 2-5. Here are some of the learning targets from these lessons: Recognize when bullying is happening, report bullying to a caring adult, and refuse to let bullying happen Be a bystander who helps stop bullying Support someone being bullied by standing up for that person and being kind and inclusive The definition of bullying: Bullying is when someone keeps being mean to someone else on purpose. The person it’s happening to hasn’t been able to make it stop. It is unfair and one-sided. You can get involved in making our school a safe and respectful place by letting us know if you hear about bullying at our school. Make sure your child knows to tell you or someone at school if they are being bullied, or if they know about someone else being bullied. Give your child the clear message that it is never okay to bully others. Checkout Monthly SEL Calendars for fun SEL activities for home. To our 5th grade families, it has been a pleasure watching your children grow over the years and I wish them all the best ahead! SEL at Home : Here are some ideas to continue your student’s social emotional growth over the summer. Summer Activities to Continue Teaching Social Emotional Learning Read. Create a cozy spot for reading and provide books that focus on social emotional topics and discuss the issues after. See some book ideas here . You can also access books by looking for authors reading their books on youtube. Go on a mindful walk. Ask your child to notice what they sense as you walk around your neighborhood. Taking the time to determine what you see, smell, hear and feel will help ground you in the moment. Garden. Plant some vegetables, flowers or herbs. Teach children how to care for the garden, building their confidence as they watch their garden grow. Journal. Have your child express themselves in writing. You could give them a writing prompt, have them write a creative story, write about a favorite memory, or reflect on current events. Practice yoga. Learn a few yoga poses to help energize in the morning or relax at the end of the day. Check out Cosmic Kids for some fun yoga activities for kids. Watch movies. Relax and watch a movie together. Use it as an opportunity to discuss the social emotional aspects of the movie and talk about how the characters felt and dealt with challenges. Make a scrapbook. Add photos and captions that describe how the child felt about their favorite memories. Create a chore chart. Teach children responsibility and the impact of contributing to their family community. Cook or bake. Practice listening and cooperation as you work together to make a delicious family meal or treat. Do art. Creating art is a great way to get in touch with emotions. Ask your child to draw or paint what they are feeling. Explore different mediums to maximize creativity. Please see SEL calendars for fun social emotional learning activities at home! May 30th Newsletter
May 30th Newsletter In this edition of the Newsletter you will find: Note From the Principal School BBQ- Volunteers Needed! Yearbooks- ALMOST GONE Recess Volunteers Note from our School Counselor Library News PE News Health Room Student Technology Report Frank Love PTA Note from the Principal Dear Frank Love Families, We’re excited to share that our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students have successfully completed the SBA testing! We are incredibly proud of their dedication, resilience, and the effort they put in throughout the testing period. Great job, everyone! A big thank you goes out to everyone who contributes to making Frank Love such a vibrant and nurturing community. Today, our staff had the special opportunity to celebrate and thank the many volunteers who make a difference in the lives of our students. It was heartwarming to see so many of you join us to be recognized and share in community together. We’d also like to give a special shout-out to three outstanding individuals who were honored by the PTA for their remarkable service and dedication. Congratulations to Stephanie Sullivan, Rene Sowald, and Rebecca Wynkoop—your impact on our school and broader community is deeply appreciated. As we wind down the school year, I want to ask for your partnership in having important conversations with your students about the power of their words. Many of our students are exposed to trends on social media where humor is sometimes rooted in making fun of others—often at the expense of identity, culture, or differences. While students may not always understand the deeper meaning of the words or jokes they repeat, these can still be harmful and deeply offensive. In my recent conversations with our 3rd through 5th graders, we’ve been discussing how words can either uplift or hurt our community. We’re encouraging students to use the THINK acronym before they speak: T – Is it True? H – Is it Helpful? I – Is it Inspiring? N – Is it Necessary? K – Is it Kind? Let’s work together to help our children understand the impact of their words and build a culture of kindness, empathy, and respect. Shelly Sehmel, RN Frank Love School Nurse ssehmel@nsd.org 425-408-4606 PE News Next week we are starting our Gymnastics unit. We highly recommend that students wear clothes that they are able to roll around in during this unit. As the weather gets warmer we know that students like to keep cool by wearing sandals, flip flops, etc. As a reminder, students are expected to wear PE appropriate shoes on their PE days. Socks are especially important for the gymnastics unit so please ensure that your student wears socks with their PE appropriate shoes on their designated PE days. Also be on the lookout for Field Day volunteer signup that will be shared through ParentSquare in the next couple weeks! Student Technology End of School Year Student Technology Communication: Families who are withdrawing from Northshore are expected to return any technology devices assigned to their student, including computers, tablets, hotspots and all accessories such as bags and chargers. Our school will be collecting devices on Monday, June 16th. A classroom device will be available for student use during the last week of school. Withdrawing students who do not return their devices and accessories will be issued a fine for replacement. Families of students currently in grades K and 1 who wish to check out an iPad for summer learning need to indicate so by completing the form at http://go.nsd.org/techoptin by June 9th. Students and families are expected to care for the device and use it only for learning purposes. The device must be returned to school on or before the first day of the 2025-26 school year. Device Protection Plan (DPP) can be purchased to protect the device from accidental damages. More information about DPP here . Students currently in grades 2-5 will be keeping their assigned computing devices over the summer months to allow for continuous learning. Students and families are expected to take care of their assigned device by keeping it charged and in its bag when not in use. Students who are enrolled in summer learning programs are expected to bring their device to summer programs each day. If families need support using their device or troubleshooting technical issues, they should create a help ticket at http://go.nsd.org/studenttechhelp.  ; 2nd-5th Grade Families may not need or want to take their student’s device home over the summer. Families who wish to opt out of keeping their student’s assigned device will need to indicate that they are “opting out” by completing the form at https://go.nsd.org/optout by June 9th . This form will help our staff to plan efficiently for sending devices home for summer learning. When students return to school in the Fall, any student who does not have an assigned device will be assigned one for school year learning.
