We have been through so much together this year. Our school year has been filled with incredible learning and growth, wonderful successes, and joy-filled experiences. We have also endured difficult moments and are continuing to face our fiscal challenges. It is not lost on me that this is impactful and painful for our community. Please know I hear and see this, and I will continue to listen, engage, and help us work through this process together. I am inspired every day by our incredible staff and students and deeply grateful to live and work in our community. Parents and guardians, thank you for your partnership in support of your child’s learning. Together, we continue to foster a strong sense of community, grounded in a spirit of unity, collaboration, and support, which are the core of who we are as Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Thank you for your unwavering support of our schools and community. As the school year ends and summer break begins, may it be a time of joy, relaxation, and cherished moments with your loved ones. This is an opportunity for students to read, create, program, discover, and continue learning. ClassLink Resources The ClassLink application that contains district digital resources will be available all summer except a day in early August when Skyward rosters transition to the next school year. Local Library Resources King County Library System (KCLS) offers K-12 students in the KCLS service area a student account. It is a special kind of library account. It uses a student’s school ID number instead of a physical library card. Student accounts provide full access to eBooks, audiobooks, online newspapers, and downloadable material plus interesting databases. Access to some resources can also be dependent on grade level. Examples include: Bookflix (elementary) Tumblebooks (elementary) Britannica (all grades) New York Times (secondary) KCLS Online Resources KCLS Summer Reading program Read anything you want. Congratulations, retirees, and thank you for all you’ve done to enrich the lives of countless students and colleagues throughout your careers. Budget Planning Update It has been a month since the last update about the Shoreline Schools’ budget rebalancing process for the 2023-24 school year , and the school year is quickly drawing to a close, so we want to provide information about the work that is ongoing and ahead of us. What is happening now Work with our employee partners - The district continues to collaborate with employee groups through the collective bargaining process. Technical budget work - District finance staff are preparing the technical budget, which involves: collaborating with the Human Resources team to fully update staffing plans for budget purposes (staff are 88% of our budget currently) updating known factors such as insurance costs, utility trend costs, etc. translating outcomes from the recent legislative session into what they mean for our funding and expenses refining the overall financial picture What lies ahead Planning for the 2023-24 school year will continue through the summer. Key dates include: July 10, 2023: Deadline for draft budget in state-required format submitted to PSESD July 18 or August 8, 2023: Presentation of draft budget at a School Board meeting August 22, 2023: Board vote to approve final budget for 2023-24 The district continues to update the budget FAQs throughout the process, and questions and suggestions may be sent to budget.advteam@ssd412.org While regular Friday updates will pause for Summer Break, the budget rebalancing process will continue, and when there are major budget developments, we will send communications to our community. New Web Addresses for 2023-24 School Year We are excited to share that the district’s website will move to a new platform, called Finalsite, starting this coming school year. While making this move, the website’s domain will change from www.shorelineschools.org to www.ssd412.org. We plan to launch the new site in August, before the start of the school year, and there will be no downtime between the current website and the new platform. The Finalsite platform is built to be a better mobile experience and to offer improved accessibility, clearer translation, intuitive search, and standardized design. As we move and rebuild content on the new system, we are also ensuring that content meets accessibility standards and web best practices. The annual cost of this more modern platform will be less than our previous system, and we anticipate that the amount of time spent maintaining website content by many staff across the district will decrease due to the efficiencies of this platform and the way we are deploying it. Many local districts, including Edmonds and Highline, have moved to the Finalsite platform in recent years, and we’ve been learning from their work and the wonderful support and onboarding teams at Finalsite. What does this mean for you? You may have pages bookmarked or may come across links that will no longer point to the right page, and you may need to search for their new location. We will redirect from shorelineschools.org to ssd412.org, and common URLs such as shorelineschools.org/enrollment and /jobs will redirect, as will school domains. We look forward to putting into practice improved usability, clear organization, more intuitive interface, consistency, and accessibility for all members of our school district community. School Supplies for Fall 2023 If your family needs assistance with school supplies for next year, items will be available at each school a few days before school begins. Please watch for your school to communicate how to pick up supplies or contact your school’s main office. Shoreline Schools Update - June 16, 2023
This week’s update contains information about: Juneteenth holiday on Monday Assistance with school supplies Possible Summer Pandemic-EBT Food Funds Calendar information for 2023-24 school year Reminder: Free summer meal sites in Shoreline Reminder: Athletic fee increases for next school year, with donation option School Board Meeting Tuesday, June 20 School Board Happenings Shoreline Schools Honor Juneteenth Shoreline school buildings and offices will be closed on Monday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. This means that Wednesday, June 21, is a full school day, not early release. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday as well as a state legal holiday. This Juneteenth marks the first time Shoreline School District will close in observance of this important event since being signed into law. What is Juneteenth? On June 19, 1865, news finally reached Galveston, Texas, that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved persons were now released from the bondage of slavery. This news arrived two and one-half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the end of the Civil War. Juneteenth honors and celebrates this momentous day in history. While the history of the holiday includes the injustice of enslavement, Juneteenth should also be understood in the context of Black people’s fight for justice and freedom. Learning for Justice staff writer Coshandra Dillard notes, “Students, particularly Black students, can find empowerment in the jubilant celebrations of culture, activism and the humanity of a people.” Learn more about the holiday, its importance, and how to honor the day in this article by OSPI " Juneteenth: Resources for Recognizing and Learning ." Find free lunch locations and times . Athletic Fee Increases for 2023-24 School Year As many members of the Shoreline Schools community are aware, our district is facing a significant budget shortfall for the coming school year due to declining revenues and decreased enrollment in recent years. This school year, we have been engaged in extensive budget planning work, part of which is examining what adjustments need to be made to maintain programs and while minimizing position reductions. In the area of athletics, the decision has been made to increase athletic fees for student participation and maintain the current athletic programs that are offered at our middle and high schools for the 2023-24 school year. High school sport fees will increase from $100 per sport to $200 per sport. Middle school sport fees will increase from $20 per sport to $100 per sport. Revenue from these fees goes into the district’s general fund, where it pays coaches’ salaries and funds transportation for sports teams. As they do currently, students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals can receive a waiver of their sport fees. If the fee increase is prohibitive for a student’s participation, we encourage them or a parent/guardian to reach out to their school’s athletic director for support. Many members of our community have asked how they can help programs such as athletics be accessible for all students, regardless of ability to pay. We are currently adding an optional donation field to athletic fee payments in our online payment system. Donations received will go to help students who aren't eligible for a fee waiver but need financial assistance for the fees to participate in a sport. We are grateful for the generosity of our community members who have offered this support to fellow students and families in many forums this school year. Donations may be made via this page: https://wa-shoreline-lite.intouchreceipting.com/ Look for the items in the drop-down menu named [school code]-GF-ATHLETIC DONATIONS EIN = Einstein Middle School KEL = Kellogg Middle School SC = Shorecrest High School SW = Shorewood High School School Board Meeting Tuesday, June 20 The Shoreline School Board will hold a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, June 20, at 6:00 pm . The meeting will be held in person in the Shoreline Room of the Shoreline Center (18560 1st Ave. NE) and streamed via Zoom. Please note that the June 20 School Board meeting will not include a budget planning process update, as there is no new information to share at this time. Next week, we will provide a summary of this year's work and include any new information we may have. We will again share key dates and next steps that will take place as budgeting work continues through July and August. The Budget FAQ has also recently been updated with current information. Shoreline Schools Update - June 2, 2023
This week’s update contains information about: June is Pride Month in Shoreline Schools Reminder: June school calendar changes Free summer meal sites expanded in Shoreline Customizing your ParentSquare notification settings Reminder: Now hiring mobility assistants and bus drivers School Board meeting Tuesday, June 6 June is Pride Month! We want to express our school district’s appreciation and support of our LGBTQ+ students, staff, community members, and allies. We see you and we stand with you. LGBTQ+ Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which the LGBTQ+ community was commonly subjected. This marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against people who identify as LGBTQ+. While our nation has made progress in that path to equality, we recognize there is much more work to do to achieve equality for our LGBTQ+ community. Children ages 1 to 18 can join us for a free lunch at these two Shoreline Schools locations: Shorecrest High School 11:00 - 11:25 am 15343 25th Ave. NE Shoreline, WA 98155 Echo Lake Elementary School 11:20 - 11:35 am 19345 Wallingford Ave. N Shoreline, WA 98133 Meals must be eaten on site. Find menus and more information The Hunger Intervention Program will also offer what is referred to as "wrap-around" meal service at Shorecrest High School on the dates that the school district's lunches are not available. Therefore, every weekday, from Wednesday, June 28 through Monday, August 28, there will be free lunch for children at Shorecrest High School, 11:00 - 11:25 am. On the following days, the lunches provided by the Hunger Intervention Program will be available in the Shorecrest parking lot: M, T, W, Th, F: June 28 - July 7 (except July 4) M and F: July 10 - August 4 (meals offered inside Shorecrest on T, W, Th these weeks) M, T, W, Th, F: August 7 - August 28 Additional nearby free lunch sites in Shoreline and North Seattle are available through Hunger Intervention Program, including the Dale Turner Y, Ballinger Homes, and the Shoreline Library throughout the summer. Find free lunch locations and times . Customize Your ParentSquare Settings Do you find yourself overwhelmed by the number of ParentSquare notifications you receive? Or do you miss posts occasionally and wish you could be notified right away? Or would you prefer a combination of the two, depending on the notification method, student or school? The good news is that ParentSquare allows family members and staff to choose exactly how they're notified about posts via email, text, and app notifications--and each method can be customized to work best for you! The Instant setting will send all post notifications in real time, so you'll receive one separate notification for every post. If too many emails throughout the day seems overwhelming, setting an email rule works well to send all emails from ParentSquare into one folder or label, where you can go find them later. If you want to be notified right away about district posts, but you'd like school posts summarized at the end of each day, you can customize this. If you want texts of each post but an email daily digest to bring them all together, you can create this setting for yourself. The Digest setting sends direct messages, alerts, and time-sensitive posts instantly, but sends all posts that are not time sensitive at approximately 6 pm each day. Posts within Digest notifications don’t have titles, so they can get overlooked, but they limit the number of emails, texts, or app notifications you receive throughout the day. If you have students at more than one school, you can even customize how you are notified for each one. Learn how to tidy up your ParentSquare in our Tech Help for Families section . You'll find detailed instructions and a video of how to make these updates in the ParentSquare app or in a web browser. Here's an example of how one parent customized their own notification settings to work best for them by school, district, and program, for each channel (email, text, and app): Bus Drivers and Mobility Assistants Needed! Letter from Superintendent Reyes About District Budg...
Dear Shoreline Schools Community, It has been just over a month since the approval of the Shoreline School District Reduced Educational Program on April 18. This month has felt long and stressful due to the challenging conversations about our fiscal situation. At the same time, it has flown by with the volume and importance of the work that we are collectively engaged in, which includes the incredible work that takes place throughout our schools every day. We are facing the hard realities of a significant budget shortfall, and difficult decisions lie ahead to arrive at a final budget to submit to the state by August 31. With a budget reduction of this size, there will be areas of reductions across the entire district. Despite the challenges, school district leadership, bargaining groups, and the school board are committed to minimizing the impact felt across our school system as much as possible. What has happened since the Reduced Educational Program was approved? Non-employee cost savings have been identified that total approximately $966K, from sources such as instructional materials, athletics, utilities, and building budgets. Employee cost savings have been identified that total approximately $8.1 million, from reductions across the district, including administrators, central office and centralized support positions, certificated staff, and building-based support staff. These savings take many forms, including furlough days, position reductions, contract suspensions, and other adjustments. These savings add up to about $9.1 million of the $13.9 million estimated savings needed to reach a targeted 2% minimum overall ending fund balance for 2023-24. There is a difference of approximately $4.8 million that must still be achieved as we continue to develop a final budget for the next year. Recently, we have received many questions about extracurricular clubs and activities. Specifically, people are asking if these are being cut from Shoreline Schools. There is no plan to eliminate all extracurricular activities, also referred to as “Extended Learning Opportunities” or “ELOs.” The district recognizes the value of these opportunities, and we are working on options to make ELOs available to students within the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. We understand that these programs and activities are important to our community and appreciate your patience as we work through this complex process. When we have final decisions about programming for the coming year, those will be communicated with the Shoreline Schools community. The FAQs about Shoreline Schools budget now address the topic of ELO funds, and we will continue to provide updates as we work through this process during the school year and into the summer. There will be a budget planning update presentation at the May 23 board meeting with more detail about the steps that have been taken and what lies ahead as we work to rebalance the school district budget. Meeting information and Zoom link As I visit schools and attend events in our community, I witness great joy, moments of profound learning, and a strong sense of support that envelops the Shoreline Schools community. I also know and see the level of anxiety and stress that this experience has brought about for our community. I see and hear the deeply felt concern and frustration around the current unknowns for next school year. As the process develops, we will share updates and clarifications as soon as we are able. I am thankful to all of you and the way in which you have engaged and participated in the process. We are a strong community, and I know we will continue to support each other during all of our ups and downs as we move along this path. I’m proud to be part of this district, and honored to serve and support our community during this time. In gratitude, Susana
