Supporting Compliance and Improving Transparency: ParentSquare’s Approach to Kentucky Senate Bill 181

In April 2025, Kentucky passed Senate Bill 181, a law requiring public school districts to provide parents and guardians with access to any electronic communications sent to or from their child. For schools, this introduces a new compliance requirement. For families, it offers a clearer view into their child’s school communications and day-to-day school experience.

Similar laws are emerging in other states, pointing to a broader shift toward transparency in school-home communication. To keep up, districts need tools that meet these requirements without adding extra work for staff or complexity for families.

At a Glance:

  • Law: Kentucky Senate Bill 181 (April 2025) requires public school districts to provide parents and guardians access to electronic communications and notifications sent to or from their child.
  • Challenge: Districts need to meet compliance requirements efficiently, without new systems or complicated processes.
  • Solution: ParentSquare’s new “View Communication” feature lets Kentucky families see posts, direct messages, and alerts for their students.
  • Availability: Available now on desktop web browsers; mobile support planned for a future update.
  • Languages: Automatic translation into 190+ languages.

A new way for families to stay informed

To support Kentucky districts, we’ve added a new feature to ParentSquare that aligns with SB 181. With this update, parents and guardians can view communications sent to or from their student—such as posts, direct messages, and recent alerts—without needing to contact the school or request access.

This feature is available to ParentSquare customers in Kentucky using a web browser. It’s part of our broader commitment to making communication more accessible, whether that’s through notifications sent via a preferred channel, messages in a family’s home language, or a simple way to see what’s been shared with their student.

How to view your student’s communications

For districts in Kentucky, families can now view their student’s communications in just a few steps:

  1. Log in to ParentSquare at www.parentsquare.com
  2. Click your student’s name or photo from the left-hand menu
  3. Select View Communication in the top right corner of the profile
  4. Use the tabs to browse posts, messages, and alerts

These communications are read-only, so families can view but not reply, react, or comment. The feature is currently available on desktop web browsers, with mobile support planned for a future update.

If you need help accessing your account, please reach out to your school directly.

Built for connection and compliance

We know that time and resources are limited. That’s why this update works within the ParentSquare platform districts already use—no need to introduce a new system or train families on something separate.

All communications are automatically translated into more than 190 languages, so families can view communications in the language they’re most comfortable with, on any device with a browser.
